When picking the car up, the main driver and any additional drivers will need to provide a physical full driver's license in their name and have held their driver's license for at least 2 years.
Unless you have a Sri Lankan driver's license, you will need one of the following:
1)International Driving License/ Permit with an endorsement by the Automobile Association of Sri Lanka (AA).
The Automobile Association is open from 9:00 to 16:00, excluding weekends and public holidays. To get a temporary driving permit instead, please take your passport, a passport-size photograph, and your driver's license (plus an English translation of the license if it’s not in English) to the Department of Motor Traffic. It’ll take at least 5 hours and cost US$ 35.00 including tax.
2)If you don’t have an IDP and hold a foreign driver's license, a Temporary Sri Lankan Driving License has to be obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Werahera (30-minute drive from Central Colombo) to be able to drive legally in Sri Lanka.
The Department of Motor Traffic is open from 9:00 to 15:30, excluding weekends and public holidays. To obtain a Temporary Sri Lankan Driving License, you need your own Country Driving License (English Copy/ Translation) + Photo copy+ your National Passport + Photo Copy of photo page and Sri Lankan Visa Page.
