Car Hire at Paros Airport (PAS)

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended if your licence isn't in Greek or English. Greek rental companies generally accept EU, UK, US, and Australian licences, but an IDP eliminates language barriers with police checkpoints. Your home licence must be valid and you must be at least 21 years old to rent a car. Note that some companies charge a young driver surcharge for drivers under 25 (typically €15–€25 per day).

Paros has a mix of well-maintained main roads and narrow, winding lanes in villages. The main环岛 (roundabouts) work fine, but mountain roads near Lefkes and the southern coast can be steep and sharp-cornered. Avoid summer afternoons when delivery trucks and tourist vehicles create bottlenecks. In villages like Naoussa and Parikia, streets are extremely narrow—consider a small car rather than a 4x4. Parking in Parikia town is notoriously scarce July–August, so book accommodation with parking if driving is essential.

Petrol stations are abundant along the main Parikia–Naoussa road and in larger villages, but some rural stations close by 21:00 or on Sundays. Greece uses a self-service system at most stations—fill your tank, then pay inside. The price of unleaded petrol is around €1.75–€1.90 per litre (2025 prices). Most rental cars run on unleaded petrol. Always return the car with a full tank to avoid refuelling charges from the rental company, which are typically 20–30% more expensive than pump prices.

Paros has no congestion charge or road tolls. However, there is a €13 toll for the ferry crossing to Antiparos if you plan to visit the neighbouring island by car. Parking in Parikia costs around €3–€5 per hour in managed car parks, while Naoussa is slightly cheaper. Some roadside parking is free but extremely limited in peak season. Blue-zone parking requires a scratch-card from kiosks—display it visibly or face a €40–€80 fine.

Summer brings intense heat (35–40°C) and heavy tourist traffic, particularly in August. Ensure your hire car's air conditioning works and carry water for emergencies. Summer wildfires can cause sudden road closures—check local news before setting off. Winter (December–February) sees far fewer rental options and some rural roads may be less well-lit. The famous meltemi wind in summer can make driving difficult, especially on exposed coastal roads. Strong gusts over 70km/h have been known to blow light vehicles sideways, so drive cautiously on the eastern coastal road.

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory and included in all rentals. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) reduces your excess from around €1,000–€2,000 to €200–€500—worth taking even if your credit card offers coverage, as card insurance often excludes Greek islands or requires you to first pay and claim later. Theft protection is advisable given occasional car break-ins at beaches. Check your credit card's policy carefully: many US cards (Chase, Amex) exclude Greece, while UK cards (Barclays, HSBC) may offer decent coverage. Confirm in writing before departing.
