UK Traveller Essentials
Basel Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Basel is a compact city with excellent public transport, but hiring a car can be a big advantage if you’re planning day trips to the Jura, the Black Forest, Alsace vineyards, Lake Lucerne, or Alpine routes. For UK travellers, the main benefits are flexibility and the ability to carry luggage easily, while the main trade-offs are city-centre parking costs, occasional congestion, and the need to understand Swiss motorway charging (vignette) and cross-border requirements. Basel sits at the three-country border (Switzerland, France and Germany), so confirm in advance whether your rental includes cross-border travel and which countries are permitted.

EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg (BSL/MLH/EAP) Car Rental Centre
Best for convenience after landing and for the widest choice of vehicles and opening hours. The airport is in France but serves Basel; car rental desks are located in the terminal area with vehicles typically in nearby car parks. Before you book, check which side (Swiss or French sector) your reservation is tied to and the permitted driving countries. Pros: largest fleet, easier late arrivals, ideal for immediate road trips. Cons: airport fees can make prices higher than city branches, queues at peak times, and cross-border terms may be stricter depending on the pick-up sector.
Basel SBB Railway Station Area (Central Basel)
A popular choice if you arrive by train from the UK via Paris/Zurich or if you prefer a car only for part of your stay. Pros: central location, easy access by tram, often cheaper than airport pick-up, simple drop-off if you’re continuing by rail. Cons: limited parking for collection/return, shorter opening hours than the airport, and city traffic can be slow at rush hour.
Basel City Centre (Grossbasel/Kleinbasel Inner Areas)
Handy if you’re staying centrally and want a short, local hire for regional trips. Pros: convenient for hotels in the centre, avoids airport surcharges, quick access to main roads once you leave the inner city. Cons: parking is expensive and restricted in parts of the centre, one-way systems can be fiddly, and pick-up/return may be less flexible outside business hours.

Pick Up At EuroAirport For The Widest Choice And Fast Getaway

EuroAirport pickup suits UK travellers arriving with luggage or landing late, with more counters, longer hours and a broader range of automatics and family cars. It’s ideal if you’re heading straight to Alsace, the Black Forest or deeper into Switzerland. Expect airport surcharges and do check cross-border permissions and whether a Swiss motorway vignette is included when you plan to use Swiss motorways.

Basel Car Hire & Driving FAQ

Practical answers for UK drivers on motorway tolls, parking, cross-border trips and winter rules around Basel.

Do I have to buy a Swiss motorway vignette for a hire car, and where do I get one?
Yes - every vehicle on Swiss motorways and most dual carriageways needs a CHF 40 vignette, valid for 14 months from the December it is issued. Stick it to the inside of the windscreen before joining the A2 or A3 around Basel. Buy it at the border, any post office, motorway services or online at via.admin.ch. If caught without one, the on-the-spot fine is CHF 200 plus the CHF 40 back-fee. Some rental firms sell it as an add-on; the cost is the same.
Can I drive in Switzerland on my UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard licence is valid on its own for visits up to 12 months - no IDP is required. Most Basel rental firms, however, set a minimum age of 21, and drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge of around CHF 15-25 per day. Bring your licence, a credit card in the main driver's name, and your passport. If you still hold the old paper-only licence, add a 1968 IDP as a precaution.
What is parking like in Basel's old town, and how do the colour-coded zones work?
Basel uses a colour system. Blue zones are free for 1-2 hours provided you display a cardboard parking disc showing your arrival time - these are sold at kiosks and tabacs for a few francs. White zones are paid (CHF 2-4 per hour) via ticket machine or the EasyPark app. Yellow zones mean no parking. The Marktplatz and Barfüsserplatz are blue and usually full on Saturdays. Two Park & Ride sites at Messeplatz and St. Jakob connect to the tram for CHF 12 all day.
Can I take a hire car from Basel across the border into France or Germany?
Yes, in most cases - EuroAirport itself sits on French soil and many drivers pop into Mulhouse or Freiburg. Schengen means no passport checks. Tell the rental firm in advance; some Swiss-franchised operators charge a cross-border fee of EUR 10-25 per day, others include it on the standard contract. Make sure the green-card insurance document is in the glovebox. Fuel is noticeably cheaper in France and Germany - worth filling up in Weil-am-Rhein.
Do I really need winter tyres or snow chains in and around Basel?
From 1 November to 15 April, winter tyres (M+S symbol, minimum 3 mm tread) are mandatory in wintry conditions, and most Swiss hire firms fit them as standard in those months - usually CHF 10-20 per day. Chains become compulsory on alpine passes when a blue chain-on sign shows; you will see them on the Gotthard, San Bernardino and Grimsel. In the city of Basel itself chains are rarely needed, but the Black Forest and Vosges one hour away can be a very different story.
How strict are Swiss speed cameras and the drink-drive limit compared with the UK?
Very strict. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05 per cent - lower than the UK's 0.08 - and anything over 0.08 is treated as a criminal offence that can lead to prosecution. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways. Fixed and mobile cameras are dense, and fines for foreign drivers are taken on the spot by credit card or cash. Exceed the limit by 20 km/h inside a town and your licence can be confiscated for at least 24 hours.
