UK Traveller Essentials
Car Hire Guide For George Town, Cayman Islands
Hiring a car in George Town is one of the easiest ways to explore Grand Cayman at your own pace, especially if you plan to visit Seven Mile Beach, Rum Point, West Bay and quieter coastal spots where taxis can be costly and public transport is limited. For travellers from the United Kingdom, the transition is generally straightforward, but note that Cayman drives on the left. Expect slower urban traffic around central George Town during cruise-ship peaks and weekday business hours, and plan for limited parking in the core waterfront area. Booking in advance is recommended in peak periods, and it is worth double-checking what is included in your price (insurance, mileage, taxes/fees, and fuel policy) to avoid surprises at the desk.

Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) – Arrivals Car Rental Area
Most convenient for UK travellers arriving via connections, with the widest choice of suppliers and opening hours aligned to flight schedules. Pros: immediate pick-up after landing, easy returns before departure, and better availability of automatics. Cons: prices can be slightly higher due to airport-related fees, queues can build at busy times, and you may need extra time to complete paperwork during peak arrivals.
George Town Waterfront / Harbour Area
Handy if you are already staying centrally or arriving by cruise tender. Pros: walkable from many hotels and the waterfront, useful for short hires or last-minute bookings. Cons: parking and traffic can be challenging during cruise-ship days, pick-up hours may be shorter than at the airport, and choice of vehicles can be more limited.
Central George Town (Business District)
A practical option for visitors staying in town for work or longer stays who do not need immediate airport collection. Pros: can be cost-effective compared with airport desks and convenient if you are nearby. Cons: you may need a taxi to reach the branch with luggage, and returns can be slower in rush-hour traffic.

Cayman Islands Car Hire Guide

Essential driving and car rental FAQs for Grand Cayman and George Town

Can I drive in the Cayman Islands with my home country's licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
UK, US, and Commonwealth licences are accepted directly for up to 90 days. If your licence isn't in English, you'll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it. Most rental companies require you to be at least 25 years old to hire a car—some allow 21-24 but levy a young driver surcharge of approximately KYD 30–50 per day. Always carry your passport as additional ID.
They drive on the left in the Cayman Islands—will I adapt easily, coming from a right-hand traffic country?
Yes, vehicles are right-hand drive and traffic flows on the left. This catches many American and Canadian visitors off guard. Take extra care at junctions and roundabouts—give way to the right, not the left as you might instinctively do. The Seven Mile Beach corridor and George Town roads are generally calm, but we strongly recommend starting on quieter streets before tackling busier roads. A single wrong overtake at a roundabout is all it takes.
Are there any toll roads or congestion charges in Grand Cayman?
There are no toll roads on Grand Cayman. The three main bridges (the 'BritCay' bridges connecting the island's sections) are free. Parking in George Town and near Seven Mile Beach costs approximately KYD 2–4 per hour at metered spots, or KYD 15–25 per day in car parks. Some restaurants and hotels offer free parking—look out for signs. Cash and major credit cards are widely accepted at parking meters.
What type of fuel do Cayman Islands cars use, and is refuelling straightforward?
Petrol (unleaded) is the standard fuel type. Diesel vehicles are available but less common. There are several petrol stations across the island, with most offering full service. The 'Travo' brand stations are prevalent. Fuel prices run roughly KYD 1.80–2.10 per litre—higher than the US mainland. Most rental agreements operate on a full-to-full basis: you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full to avoid a refuelling charge at above-market rates.
How does hurricane season affect my self-drive plans in the Cayman Islands?
Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with peak risk in August and October. Tropical storms can develop rapidly, and driving becomes hazardous with sudden heavy rain, flooding, and strong winds. If a hurricane warning is issued, rental companies suspend operations and you should shelter indoors immediately. We strongly advise purchasing comprehensive insurance that covers weather-related damage, and consider travel insurance with trip interruption cover. During this period, monitor the National Weather Service website and your rental company's contact instructions.
