UK Traveller Essentials
Lima Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up and What To Expect
Hiring a car in Lima can be excellent value for longer stays and for travellers who want the flexibility to explore beyond the capital—such as coastal drives to Paracas, Huacachina (Ica) or further north along the Pan-American Highway. Within central Lima, traffic can be heavy and driving styles assertive, so many visitors prefer to use taxis/ride-hailing in the city and use a hire car mainly for day trips or onward travel. For UK travellers, remember you’ll be driving on the right, and it’s wise to choose automatic transmission if you’re not comfortable with a manual in busy conditions. Book in advance for better pricing, check the fuel policy, and inspect the car carefully at pick-up and return.

Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) — Callao
The main gateway for Lima and the most convenient place to collect a car if you’re arriving with luggage or travelling straight out of the city. Typically offers longer opening hours, broader vehicle choice and easier comparisons between providers. Downsides can include airport surcharges, queues at peak arrival times, and immediate exposure to dense traffic as you leave the airport area.
Miraflores (Larcomar / Parque Kennedy Area)
Pros: popular for hotels and serviced apartments, easy to access for coastal routes, and convenient if you’re staying in Miraflores before heading out of Lima. Cons: limited parking, frequent congestion, and strict attention needed for one-way streets and pedestrian-heavy zones.
San Isidro (Financial District)
Pros: generally more orderly streets, good access to major avenues, and often calmer for pick-up than the historic centre. Cons: business-hour traffic can be intense, parking can be costly, and pick-up points may be less convenient if you’re staying elsewhere.

Lima Car Rental Guide

Essential driving and car hire FAQs for exploring Peru's capital and beyond

Can I drive in Peru with my foreign licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
A valid foreign licence is technically accepted, but an International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended and practically essential. Police checkpoints are common outside Lima, and an IDP removes any ambiguity. The IDP costs around £15-20 and is valid for one year. Without it, you risk fines of up to 400 soles (£80). Always carry both your original licence and IDP together.
How do I pay for toll roads in Peru, and are they expensive?
Toll roads (peajes) charge between 10-70 soles (£2-14) depending on distance. Most accept cash and card at booths, but electronic tags (Telepeaje) are becoming more common. The Pan-American Highway north of Lima is toll-based. Budget roughly 200-400 soles (£40-80) for a return trip to destinations like Paracas or Huacachina. Credit cards are widely accepted at toll booths.
I'm under 25 — how much will the young driver surcharge cost me in Peru?
Most rental companies charge a young driver surcharge for drivers aged 21-24, typically adding 100-150 soles (£20-30) per day on top of the base rate. This can nearly double your daily cost. Some local agencies may be cheaper but often lack proper insurance. Under-21s face extreme difficulty renting — many companies simply refuse. Compare quotes carefully and factor this into your budget before booking.
Is it safe to drive in Lima itself? What about traffic conditions?
Lima's traffic is notoriously chaotic — aggressive lane-cutting, limited signalling, and informal taxi behaviour are the norm. Avoid driving in central Lima during rush hours (07:00-09:00 and 17:00-20:00) if possible. One-way systems confuse even locals. However, once outside the city on the Pan-American Highway, driving is straightforward with relatively light traffic. Rent a car primarily for intercity travel, not city navigation.
What fuel do I need, and are petrol stations easy to find?
Peru uses unleaded petrol (gasolina 90, 95 and 98 octane). Gas stations are abundant along major highways and in cities — you'll never struggle to find fuel on the main tourist routes. The 'full-to-full' policy is standard: collect the car full, return it full. Diesel vehicles are also available if renting a 4x4 for mountain routes. Fuel prices are roughly half UK prices, making driving remarkably economical.
Do I really need comprehensive insurance, or will my credit card cover me?
Third-party liability insurance is mandatory and typically included in rental prices. However, basic coverage often leaves you with a large excess (£500-1,500). Full comprehensive cover costs an extra 80-150 soles (£16-30) daily but eliminates excess claims. Your credit card's CDW is generally not accepted in Peru — rental agents routinely reject it. Budget for proper insurance; medical and accident costs otherwise could be catastrophic.
