Mallorca Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Mallorca is one of the easiest ways to see more than Palma and the main resorts. Public transport can be good between larger towns, but reaching hidden coves, rural fincas and the Serra de Tramuntana viewpoints is far simpler with your own vehicle. For UK travellers, driving is generally straightforward, but remember Spain drives on the right, roundabouts can be busy, and many older town centres have narrow lanes and restricted access. Book early for peak summer, check what is included (excess level, extra driver, young driver fees), and confirm the fuel policy and deposit method before you arrive.

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) Car Rental Centre
The main arrival point for most UK flights and the most convenient place to collect a car. Follow the “Car Rental/Alquiler de coches” signs inside the terminal towards the dedicated rental area. Pros: widest choice of companies and vehicle types, longest opening hours, easy to start your trip immediately. Cons: queues at peak times, higher likelihood of upsell at the desk, airport surcharges can apply, and car parks can be busy when returning.
Palma City Centre (Avingudes / Old Town Edge)
Pros: good if you do not want to drive immediately after landing and prefer to spend a day or two in Palma first; often easier to access by taxi/bus from your accommodation. Cons: limited opening hours compared with the airport, parking is tight and can be expensive, and collecting a car in the centre may involve navigating one-way systems and restricted zones.
Palma Port (Port de Palma / Paseo Marítimo)
Pros: convenient for cruise passengers or travellers staying along the seafront; straightforward access to the Ma-19 and coastal routes. Cons: traffic can be heavy around ferry/cruise times, parking areas are busy, and availability can be more limited than at the airport.

Why Pick Up At Palma De Mallorca Airport (PMI)

Airport pick-up is usually the simplest option for UK travellers: more suppliers, more automatic and family-sized cars, and better chances of late arrivals being covered by longer opening hours. It can also reduce transfer costs to your resort. Consider booking a ‘full-to-full’ fuel policy and checking the excess/deposit terms to avoid surprises at the desk, especially in peak summer.

Mallorca Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Practical Answers on Hire Rules, Mountain Roads, Parking, Tolls and Age Surcharges in Mallorca

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to hire a car in Mallorca after Brexit?
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, UK licences are treated as non-EU, so you must carry both your valid UK photocard licence and a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. The AA and RAC issue them for £5.50, valid 12 months. Spain does not accept the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP, so order the correct version. Hire desks at Palma Airport will refuse handover without both documents, and Guardia Civil roadside checks can issue €500 on-the-spot fines if you cannot produce them.
Is the Sa Calobra road (MA-2141) safe, and when should I avoid it?
The MA-2141 descends 800m over 12.5km with more than 20 hairpins, including the famous Nus de sa Corbata double-loop. Stick to 1st/2nd gear with engine braking, drive only in daylight, and avoid July–August weekends when coaches and cyclists block the single-lane sections. The road closes for maintenance October–November. Cap de Formentor (PM-221) is equally tight. Take full coverage insurance — stone chips, wing-mirror scrapes and underbody damage are the most common claims on the Tramuntana network.
Are there motorway tolls in Mallorca, and do I need an electronic tag?
Mallorca has zero motorway tolls — the Ma-19, Ma-20 and Ma-13 around Palma and the Sa Pobla link are entirely free. The only charge is the 3.5km Sóller tunnel on the Ma-11, which costs €5.05 per car (pay by card or cash at the booth). No Via-T tag is required anywhere on the island. Sat-navs imported from the mainland sometimes suggest paid routes, so ignore any 'avoid tolls' prompts while driving in Mallorca.
I'm 23 — can I hire a car, and how much is the young driver surcharge?
All major firms (Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Goldcar) require a minimum age of 21 and at least one year of licence held. Drivers under 25 pay €20–€30 per day, usually capped at €200–€300 per rental. Drivers over 70 may face an equivalent senior surcharge or be refused altogether. Local operators such as Centauro, OK Mobility and Record Go are typically €10–€15/day cheaper than the international brands for the same age profile.
Where can I park cheaply in Palma, and how do the blue zones work?
The OTA blue zones in central Palma cost €1.05–€2.10 per hour, charged Mon–Fri 09:00–14:00 and 16:00–20:00, plus Saturday 09:00–14:00. Parking is free all day Sunday and on Saturday afternoons. Buy tickets at the metre, via the APParc app or by SMS. For cheaper stays, use the Marratxí Park & Ride (€2.50/day, 15 min by train to Plaça d'Espanya) or the airport perimeter Park & Ride with a free shuttle. Unpaid-ticket fines are €90, reduced to €45 within 20 days.
Should I book an automatic, and how much extra will it cost?
Manuals dominate the Spanish fleet, so automatics sell out fast in June–September. Book 3–4 months ahead if you specifically need one and expect to pay €20–€40 per day above an equivalent manual. A small SUV with an automatic (Seat Arona, Peugeot 2008 or Kia Stonic) is a sensible choice for Tramuntana mountain drives, where stalling on a hairpin during a coach convoy is every nervous driver's nightmare. Diesel automatics also cope better with the long, steep climbs.
