UK Traveller Essentials
Mexico City Car Rental Guide for UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Mexico City can be a smart choice if you plan day trips beyond the city—such as Teotihuacán, Puebla, or the volcano region—where flexibility beats fixed tour timetables. Within the city itself, traffic can be heavy and parking can be limited, so a car is most convenient if your itinerary includes out-of-town driving, early starts, or multiple stops in a day. Expect a mix of modern motorways and busy urban streets, frequent speed bumps (topes), and a high reliance on toll roads (cuotas) for faster intercity travel. For UK travellers, key differences include driving on the right, stricter attention to local insurance requirements, and a strong preference for using a credit card in the main driver’s name for deposits.

Mexico City International Airport (MEX) – Terminal 1
Largest and most common pickup point with multiple rental desks and extended opening hours. Ideal after a long flight from the UK, but be prepared for busier counters and firm upsell attempts on insurance. Allow extra time for paperwork, vehicle inspection and exiting the airport road system.
Reforma / Zona Rosa
Pros: central for business hotels and sightseeing; easy access towards Chapultepec and major avenues. Cons: congested during rush hour, limited kerb parking, and higher risk of minor scrapes—inspect the car carefully and photograph all panels before leaving.
Polanco
Pros: premium neighbourhood with many hotels and straightforward routes to the ring roads for day trips. Cons: heavy traffic at peak times and paid parking is common; rental pricing may be higher due to location overheads.

Why Pick Up at Mexico City Airport (MEX)

Airport pickup is convenient after a UK flight, with broader opening hours, more vehicle choice and quick access to major routes once you clear the airport roads. It can also simplify one-way trips and early departures. Expect busier desks and ensure you understand insurance requirements and deposits before you sign.

Mexico City Car Hire FAQ

Practical answers for UK drivers on licences, toll roads, traffic rules and insurance in the Mexican capital

Can I drive in Mexico with my UK photocard licence alone?
Officially, no. Mexican traffic law requires a 1968-convention International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your UK photocard licence for any visit exceeding the brief tourist grace period. In practice, most major rental desks at Benito Juárez (MEX) airport accept the photocard on its own, but if you are pulled over by police outside the city, the lack of an IDP can invalidate your travel insurance. Get the permit from the AA or RAC for £5.50 before you fly — it is cheap protection and takes a week to arrive by post.
What is 'Hoy No Circula' and could my rental car be banned from the road?
Hoy No Circula is Mexico City's weekday number-plate rotation scheme, and it does not normally apply to foreign-plated rental cars, so most tourists escape the rule. The problem comes when a 'contingencia ambiental' (air-quality emergency) is declared: restrictions tighten, and even hire cars can be stopped between 05:00 and 22:00 on certain days. Check the local environmental announcement each morning, avoid driving older vehicles during ozone alerts, and do not park on Avenida Reforma on Sundays — it closes entirely to cars.
How do I pay the toll booths (casetas) around Mexico City?
Casetas on the main autopistas out of Mexico City cost between 50 and 400 pesos each, payable in cash at the booth. Card lanes exist on the México-Cuernavaca and México-Querétaro routes, but cash is still king on the México-Puebla and México-Toluca corridors. There is no nationwide electronic tag you can hire short-term, so keep at least 1,500 pesos in small notes for a day return to Teotihuacán or Tepoztlán. Avoid the toll-free 'libre' roads after dark — they are poorly lit and notorious for hold-ups, especially the México-Cuernavaca libre.
Is driving in Mexico City really as chaotic as people say?
Yes, but it follows its own logic. Expect average speeds of 12–15 km/h in Centro Histórico between 08:00–10:00 and 17:00–20:00, with Periférico and Avenida Insurgentes regularly gridlocked. The biggest risk is not crime but 'topes' (sleeping policemen) and aggressive lane-changes by buses and minibuses. Use Waze or Google Maps religiously — both are more accurate than any sat-nav built into a hire car. Give way to green-and-yellow peseros, never flash your lights to invite a merge, and treat one-way streets in Centro as suggestions rather than rules.
What insurance do I actually need, and will I be charged extra as a young driver?
Mexican law bundles third-party liability (Responsabilidad Civil) into every rental contract — do not pay extra for it. You must, however, add CDW/LDW with a zero-excess waiver and top-up theft cover: break-ins in Polanco, Roma and Coyoacán car parks are depressingly common. Most firms levy a young-driver fee of USD 10–18 per day for 21–24 year-olds, and a few (Hertz, Sixt) refuse to hire to under-25s at all. Pay with a credit card, not a debit card, or the security hold can double and the excess waiver may be voided.
