UK-Friendly Guidance
Abha Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Abha is one of the easiest ways to explore the Asir Region at your own pace, especially for viewpoints, parks and nearby towns where public transport can be limited. Roads in and around Abha are generally well paved, but you should expect steep gradients, tight turns and occasional fog or low cloud at higher elevations. For travellers from the United Kingdom, the key practicalities are carrying the correct documents (passport, licence, and any required international permit), understanding local fuel and deposit policies, and choosing the right pickup point—airport for speed after landing, or downtown for flexibility and sometimes lower overall cost. Below are the most popular rental locations with straightforward pros and cons.

BEST RENT A CAR
KEY CAR RENTAL
Abha International Airport (AHB) – Arrivals Car Hire Area
Best for immediate pickup after your flight. Typical process: follow signs from Arrivals to the car hire counters/desks, complete the agreement, then collect the vehicle from the designated airport parking area. Advantages: longer opening hours, better availability of automatics and SUVs, and easier one-way planning. Disadvantages: airport surcharges may apply and queues can form around peak arrival times.
Abha City Centre – Main Commercial Streets
Convenient if you are staying centrally and prefer to compare options on arrival. Advantages: can be cheaper than airport pickup, easier to return if your hotel is nearby, and more flexibility if you decide to hire later in the trip. Disadvantages: parking can be tighter, some branches may have shorter opening hours, and availability may be more limited for specific models.
Abha Hotel District – Around Major Hotels
Practical for business and leisure stays where you want minimal walking with luggage. Advantages: quick handover near accommodation and often straightforward returns. Disadvantages: smaller branches may have fewer cars and stricter return-time expectations, and prices can vary by hotel-area demand.

Abha lies in the Sarawat Mountains, and roads to Al-Soudah and Asir National Park climb steeply with sharp bends and mist. A mid-size SUV with stable handling, higher ground clearance and confident braking copes easily with hairpin turns and gravel viewpoints. Rijal Almaa, Al-Habala and the cable car are best with family, and a people-carrier keeps everyone together on longer highland drives. Sliding doors help in narrow village lanes, while elevated seating offers a better view of stone walls and terraced fields. The boot takes day bags, souvenirs and warm layers for cool evenings.

Around Abha's boulevards, the lake, the highland markets and local malls, a medium saloon is easy to park and light on petrol. It suits short day trips on calmer roads such as the route to Tanomah or the lower valley villages. Air-conditioning, a smooth automatic gearbox and a small footprint make every city loop effortless.

Driving in Abha: Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Everything British drivers need to know about IDP rules, mountain roads, Saher speed cameras and fuel in Saudi Arabia's Asir region

Can I drive in Abha with just my UK photocard licence?
Short answer: no. Saudi Arabia does not recognise a UK photocard licence on its own. British visitors must carry a valid 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by the AA or RAC, presented together with the original UK photocard and a passport bearing a tourist visa. The IDP must be obtained before departure from the UK, as Saudi offices do not issue them. At the Abha Airport (AHB) rental counter, staff will photocopy all three documents. Driving without a valid IDP is treated as unlicensed driving, fines start at SAR 500, and your insurance is void.
Is the road up to Jebel Sawda safe for first-time visitors?
The 25 km ascent from Abha to Al Soudah village and Jebel Sawda (around 3,015 m, the highest point in Saudi Arabia) is fully sealed but extremely steep and twisty, with sheer drops and dozens of hairpin bends. Pick a compact SUV or saloon rather than a long-wheelbase vehicle. Avoid the route after dark, in summer fog (June–August) and during winter frost (December–February), and use low gears on the descent to avoid brake fade. Allow 90 minutes each way and refill the tank before setting off.
How cheap is petrol around Abha, and do stations accept cards?
Petrol (91 or 95 octane) is heavily subsidised in Saudi Arabia, around SAR 2.18 per litre (about 45p), well under half UK pump prices. Stations are plentiful on the Abha–Khamis Mushayt corridor and inside the city; most are full-serve with attendants who will fill up for you. Mada, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but keep a few riyals for unmanned rural pumps. Most rentals are returned full-to-full, so refuel the night before drop-off to avoid flat refuelling surcharges of SAR 50–75 plus inflated per-litre prices.
Will I be hit with a young driver surcharge if I am under 25?
Yes. Almost every major rental firm in Abha, including Hertz, Avis, Budget, Theeb, Hanco and Yelo, applies a 'young driver fee' of roughly SAR 30–50 per day (about £6–£11) for drivers aged 21–24, charged on top of the base rate. The minimum rental age is usually 21, though premium and large-SUV categories require 25. Drivers under 21 cannot rent at all. The fee is charged per driver per day, payable at the desk and non-negotiable, so factor it into your online quote before booking.
How strict are speed cameras and the Saher system around Abha?
Saudi Arabia's Saher network is one of the Gulf's most rigorous: fixed gantries, mobile units and average-speed cameras operate day and night. Default limits are 80 km/h in town, 120 km/h on motorways and as low as 40–60 km/h on the mountain bends above Abha. Fines start at SAR 300 and can exceed SAR 2,000 for serious excess, while also adding 'black points' to your licence. Unpaid fines block you at airport departure, so stick religiously to the posted limits.
Do I need winter tyres or snow chains for the Asir mountains?
Occasionally, yes. Temperatures on Jebel Sawda regularly fall below 0 °C between December and February, producing black ice on shaded hairpins, and light snow flurries are common at the summit. Chains are rarely stocked by rental firms, so request a car with all-season tyres in writing before arrival. If the local authorities close the Abha–Al Soudah road (signposted 'مغلق'), police barriers enforce it — do not attempt the climb. Always carry a warm jacket, water and a charged phone in case of an unplanned stop.
