UK Traveller Essentials
Alanya Car Rental Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Alanya is a practical way to explore beaches, viewpoints and nearby resorts without relying on taxis or limited public transport. It is especially useful for day trips along the coast and for travelling with luggage or family. Expect the best availability at airports and the easiest pick-up for resort stays in central Alanya. UK travellers should note that Turkey drives on the right, many rentals are manual, and an International Driving Permit is usually not required for UK licence holders for short visits, but you should still carry your photocard licence and passport and check the rental company’s rules. Common extra costs include a security deposit, optional excess reduction, young driver fees, and cross-border restrictions. Take photos of the car at collection, confirm the fuel policy (full-to-full is often best), and ask about toll roads (HGS/OGS) and how they are charged.

Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP) – Arrivals Car Rental Desks
Closest airport to Alanya and the most straightforward place to collect a car for a beach holiday or onward travel. Pros: good availability, longer opening hours in peak season, simple start for road trips. Cons: prices can be higher than city offices, queues when multiple flights land, and some suppliers require a credit card for the deposit.
Alanya City Centre (Atatürk Boulevard Area)
Convenient if you arrive by coach, transfer or taxi and only need a car for a few days. Pros: can be cheaper than airport pick-up, easier to return if staying centrally. Cons: limited parking, narrower streets, and shorter office hours compared with airports.
Alanya Harbour / Marina Vicinity
Handy for hotels near the waterfront and for scenic coastal drives. Pros: walkable from many central hotels, good base for day trips towards Side/Manavgat. Cons: busy in summer, parking and access can be restricted during events, and vehicle choice may be smaller.

Alanya's old town squeezes into tight streets near the harbour, and seaside car parks fill up fast in July and August. A small hatchback slips through the Kaleici lanes, costs very little on diesel, and stays cool with strong air conditioning. It is the sensible choice for couples and short hops to Cleopatra Beach.

Day trips up to the Taurus Mountains, Dim Cave and Sapadere Canyon involve steep, twisting tarmac with hairpin bends. An SUV gives you a higher driving position, stronger grip on dewy mornings in spring, and space for hiking kit. It is also comfortable on the D400 coastal road between Alanya and Antalya.

British families often arrive in groups of five or six, with cases, prams and beach gear. A van swallows everyone, keeps the holiday stress-free, and handles the long airport transfer with room to spare. Air conditioning is essential in peak summer, and you will appreciate the boot on market days.

Airport collection (GZP or AYT) is ideal if you want maximum vehicle choice, longer opening hours and a quick transition from flight to road trip. It is usually the easiest option for families and travellers with luggage, and it can reduce the need for transfers—though rates and deposits may be higher at peak times.

Hiring a Car in Alanya: Your Questions Answered

Practical advice on licences, roads, tolls, fuel and insurance for self-driving along the Turkish Riviera

Can I drive in Turkey with my UK photocard licence, or do I need an IDP?
Your UK photocard licence is valid in Turkey for up to 12 months, so strictly speaking an International Driving Permit is not compulsory. However, most Alanya rental desks (Hertz, Avis, Garenta, Sixt) ask to see a 1968-style IDP alongside it, and Turkish traffic police can fine you on the spot for not carrying one. Bring both, plus your passport.
What is the minimum age to hire a car in Alanya, and how much is the young-driver surcharge?
The big chains require drivers to be at least 21 with one year's licence; Economy Bookings and Goldcar in Manavgat will hire to 19-year-olds but with steeper fees. Drivers under 25 typically pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly 8-12 GBP per day on top of the rental rate, levied locally at the counter, not in your pre-paid voucher.
Are the tolls on the D400 Antalya-Mersin motorway cashless, and is it worth renting an HGS tag?
Turkey uses a fully electronic toll system: HGS (pre-paid tag) or OGS (in-car transponder). There are no toll booths to pay cash at. For a week driving Antalya Airport to Alanya and back, you will use the O-31 and D400 toll sections costing around 200-300 TRY each way. Most rental companies fit an HGS tag automatically and charge the crossings plus a 25 TRY admin fee on return, which is far easier than queuing for an HGS card yourself.
Is driving in Alanya's Taurus mountain bends really stressful, and are winter tyres needed?
The coast road D400 is flat and easy, but the inland route to the Taurus villages (Ibradi, Akseki) climbs to 1,200 m with tight hairpins. Between December and February the passes can be closed for snow, and snow chains become mandatory whenever police place the 'Zincir' sign. In summer there is no such requirement, so summer tyres and a cautious pace are perfectly adequate.
What fuel policy should I choose, and where can I refuel cheaply near Alanya?
Pick 'full-to-full' and return the car with the same fuel level shown on the handover form to avoid refuelling charges of 80-120 TRY plus a hefty markup. Petrol stations are plentiful: Opet, Petrol Ofisi and BP on the D400 between Mahmutlar and Konakli are reliable and accept international cards. Diesel is around 42 TRY per litre, unleaded 44 TRY; keep the last fuel receipt as proof in case the rental desk disputes the level.
What insurance is genuinely worth buying, and is the local third-party liability cover enough?
Mandatory third-party (Trafik Sigortasi) is included by law, but its damage cover is capped very low. Always take the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with a deductible no higher than 1,500 EUR, plus tyre, glass and roof cover for around 8-12 GBP per day - Alanya's narrow old-town streets are notorious for scratched alloys. Check whether your UK bank card already includes CDW before paying, but note that UK cover usually excludes the tyre/glass add-on you will still need to buy.
