UK Travellers
Asahikawa Car Hire Guide: Where to Pick Up and What to Expect
Renting a car in Asahikawa is one of the easiest ways to reach Furano, Biei, Daisetsuzan and rural Hokkaido at your own pace, especially in winter when daylight is limited and public transport can be less convenient. UK travellers should note that Japan drives on the left (familiar), but you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) under the 1949 Geneva Convention (carry it with your UK licence and passport). Expect compact cars to be common, automatics to be widely available, and winter equipment (snow tyres) to be essential in colder months. Costs can vary with season, vehicle size, one-way returns and extras such as child seats, additional drivers and ETC (toll) cards. Fuel stations are plentiful in and around the city, but can be sparse in remote mountain areas—plan refuelling and allow extra time for snowy roads.

Asahikawa Airport (AKJ) Car Rental Counters
The main gateway for flyers to Asahikawa. Rental desks are typically in or near the terminal, with vehicles collected via nearby lots or short shuttles depending on the operator. Ideal for landing and driving straight to Furano/Biei without backtracking into town. Pros: longest opening hours, strong vehicle availability, easier luggage handling and quick onward access to major routes. Cons: airport surcharges may apply, peak-season queues are common, and you may face stricter fuel/return timing windows compared with small city branches.
Asahikawa Station Area (City Centre Branches)
Convenient if you arrive by rail or want to spend a night in the city before collecting your car. Pros: easy access from hotels, often calmer than airport counters, and good for local-day itineraries. Cons: limited parking around pick-up points, shorter business hours, and you may spend extra time driving out of town in traffic compared with airport pick-up.
Heiwa-dori / Central Shopping Streets (Inner-City Offices)
Smaller branches within central Asahikawa, useful for travellers staying downtown. Pros: walkable from many accommodations and straightforward for city-based stays. Cons: smaller fleets, fewer 4WD options in winter, and return procedures may be tighter due to limited forecourt space.

Asahikawa endures some of Japan's heaviest snowfall, with temperatures regularly plunging below freezing. A four-wheel-drive SUV is essential for snow-packed routes to ski fields like Furano and Asahidake. Higher clearance clears deep slush, and an automatic gearbox makes icy hill starts easier. Heated cabins and dependable traction bring peace of mind on winter mountain roads.

Hokkaido's summer turns Biei and Furano into a riot of lavender and patchwork fields. A convertible lets you soak up the cool northern air and pause wherever the light catches the hills. Well-surfaced rural roads are a joy, and parking at viewpoints is rarely a problem. Ideal for couples chasing a classic Hokkaido road-trip.

Family trips to Asahiyama Zoo or Sounkyo Onsen are far easier in a roomy minivan. Extra seats and generous luggage swallow pushchairs, ski kit or hiking gear with ease. Sliding doors make loading simple in tight car parks, and elevated seating helps on mountain passes. An automatic gearbox keeps everyone relaxed on long days out.

Asahikawa Car Hire FAQs for UK Drivers

Practical answers on driving licences, winter roads, motorway tolls, insurance excess and one-way rentals in Hokkaido's snow city

Can I use my UK driving licence in Japan, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your valid UK photocard licence is accepted, but you MUST also carry an International Driving Permit. Crucially, Japan only recognises the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP (the older grey booklet), NOT the 1968 version issued at many Post Offices. Apply in advance — it costs £5.50 and is valid 12 months. You must carry your IDP, UK licence and passport together at all times, and every rental desk will refuse to hand over keys without both documents.
Will I get stuck driving to Sounkyo or Daisetsuzan in winter? Are snow chains really compulsory?
Honestly, the risk is real. Asahikawa regularly drops to -15°C or -20°C between December and February, with several metres of snow on mountain routes. Reputable firms (Times, Toyota, Nippon) fit studless winter tyres as standard from November to April, but confirm this in writing. Snow chains are mandatory on signed sections of Routes 39 and 273; police turn cars back without them. Pack a blanket, shovel and fully charged phone — black ice on rural lanes is the biggest hidden danger.
How much are motorway tolls in Hokkaido, and is an ETC card worth the hassle?
Hokkaido expressways are pricey. The 140 km Asahikawa–Sapporo run on the Hokkaido Expressway costs roughly ¥3,500-4,000 (about £18-21) one way. Cash and credit cards work at manned gates, but the ETC electronic tag is far quicker and earns discounts of up to 30% off-peak. Rental firms rent ETC cards for around ¥300-500 per day plus a small deposit. If you plan two or more long drives, the ETC pays for itself and saves queueing in the cold.
Can I pick up a car at Asahikawa Airport at 07:00, and what does a one-way drop-off to New Chitose cost?
Asahikawa Airport (AKJ) has a small cluster of counters (Toyota, Times, Nippon) just outside arrivals, but opening hours are typically 08:00-20:00 — a 7am arrival is too early, so you'll wait or pre-book a courtesy shuttle. A one-way Asahikawa-to-New Chitose (CTS) drop-off in a compact car costs roughly ¥5,000-8,000 (£26-42); SUVs and 4WDs are higher. In winter, book at least 3-5 days ahead, and check the drop-off branch is open on your return date.
Is the basic insurance enough, or will I be liable for thousands if I scrape a snowbank?
The standard Collision Damage Waiver bundled into most Hokkaido rentals still leaves an excess of around ¥50,000-100,000 (£260-520) per incident, plus a daily 'Non-Operation Charge' if the car goes off-fleet. For roughly £15-25 per day you can upgrade to full CDW/NOC cover, dropping the excess to zero. Given icy kerbs, hidden snowbanks and unfamiliar narrow lanes around Asahikawa's older districts, I'd strongly recommend the upgrade — one minor prang can otherwise run to £500+ in minutes.
