Baghdad Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up and What To Expect
Hiring a car in Baghdad can be convenient if you want flexibility for meetings, family visits, or trips beyond the city, especially when you prefer private transport over waiting for taxis. That said, driving conditions can be demanding: traffic can be heavy, road layouts may be unfamiliar, and procedures (deposit holds, insurance wording, fuel rules) may differ from what UK drivers expect. Aim to book in advance, choose clear fuel and mileage terms, and take time at collection to photograph the vehicle and confirm what is included in your cover and excess.
Baghdad International Airport (BIAP) – Arrivals/Car Hire Pick-up
Most visitors choose BIAP for the widest availability and easiest first-day logistics. Expect desk-based collection (often in/near the arrivals area or an adjacent office) with vehicle handover in a nearby car park. Pros: longer opening hours, more vehicle choice, straightforward for late arrivals. Cons: airport surcharges can apply, queues at peak times, and security checks may add time—keep documents ready (passport, driving licence, booking voucher, and payment card).
Al Karrada (Central/East Baghdad)
A practical option if you want to avoid airport fees or you’re already staying centrally. Pros: often closer to hotels and businesses, potentially lower surcharges. Cons: parking can be tight, traffic is dense, and collection hours may be shorter—confirm the exact pick-up point and after-hours policy.
Al Mansour (West Baghdad)
Popular for residential and commercial areas with good onward links. Pros: convenient for west-side accommodation and errands, easier access to main roads. Cons: availability may be more limited than the airport and specific branch locations can be harder to find—use a precise map pin and local contact number.

Baghdad's summer climbs past 45°C, and sealed roads out to Babylon, Karbala and the desert fringes still throw up fine dust and grit. A compact SUV with reliable air conditioning, a raised ride height and sturdy filters makes daily urban driving cooler and longer escapes far more comfortable. Strong resale value across Iraqi hire fleets also keeps rates sensible for British visitors booking in advance.

Auto

Central Baghdad is dense, traffic is assertive and secure hotel parking favours smaller footprints. A small hatchback or saloon slips through tight lanes, uses less fuel in stop-start queues and keeps you cooler in the cabin. It is the most economical choice for visitors mainly sightseeing in the city centre, Kadhimiya and the Tigris embankments.

Travelling with family or a small group to sites like the Ziggurat of Ur, Hatra or the marshes of southern Iraq means long days and plenty of luggage, water and supplies. A seven-seat van gives every passenger their own seat, room for coolers and camera bags, and a smoother ride on rougher regional roads. Automatic transmission is widely available and recommended for visitors unused to local driving styles.

Baghdad Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers on licences, roads, fuel, insurance and safety for driving in Baghdad, Iraq

Can I drive in Baghdad with a UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is accepted for short tourist stays in Iraq, but most local rental firms still ask for a 1968-style International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it for ID purposes. Carry both, plus your passport and visa. The minimum age is usually 21–25, and drivers under 25 face a young-driver surcharge of roughly USD 10–20 per day.
Is it really safe to drive yourself around Baghdad in 2026?
Honest answer: caution is essential. The FCDO currently advises against all but essential travel to much of Iraq, and several insurers exclude Baghdad outright. If you do drive, stick to the Green Zone, Karkh, Mansour and the airport corridor during daylight, avoid checkpoints you are not waved through, and choose a 4x4 with solid insurance. Independent travel to Anbar, Mosul or the desert provinces is strongly discouraged.
What are the speed limits, road rules and fuel situation I should know?
Drive on the right. Urban limits are 60 km/h, rural 80–100 km/h, and motorways 120 km/h, enforced by fixed cameras and police patrols with radar. Fuel is cheap at around 500–700 IQD per litre of petrol, sold at staffed stations only; carry cash as cards are rarely accepted. Return the car full-to-full, and remember Iraq has no motorway toll network.
Which insurance is genuinely worth the extra cost in Iraq?
Basic Collision Damage Waiver is usually included, but the cap is high and Iraqi roads make scratches almost inevitable. Pay for full zero-excess cover that adds theft, tyre, glass and, crucially, personal accident and roadside assistance in English. A third-party liability top-up of at least USD 1 million is wise. Note that most UK credit-card CDW policies exclude Iraq, so do not rely on them.
Where should I pick up and drop off the car, and what are the practicalities?
Baghdad International (BGW) is the only realistic hire point, with desks open 24/7 for scheduled flights. Allow 45–60 minutes for paperwork and vehicle inspection, and photograph every panel before leaving. One-way drop-offs outside Baghdad are rarely offered, and if allowed attract a minimum USD 150 fee. Keep your rental agreement, passport and insurance copy with you at all checkpoints.
