Updated Travel Essentials
Bali Car Rental Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Bali can be convenient for day trips beyond the main resort areas—think waterfalls, temples, rice terraces and coastal routes—especially if you prefer flexible timings over tour schedules. However, Bali’s traffic, narrow roads and parking constraints can make driving slower and more demanding than expected. For many visitors, a car with a local driver is a popular alternative, but if you want full independence (and are comfortable with busy conditions), self-drive hire can still work well. Expect best value by booking in advance, checking inclusions carefully (insurance, mileage, additional driver fees), and confirming fuel and deposit policies before you arrive. For travellers from the United Kingdom, remember driving is on the left in Indonesia, but you should still plan for different road etiquette and signage; an International Driving Permit (IDP) is commonly requested alongside your UK licence.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) – Arrivals Area
Bali’s main airport and the most common starting point. After landing, follow signs for transport and car rental desks/meeting points. Many providers operate via a counter or a meet-and-greet collection, so confirm your voucher instructions, WhatsApp contact, and the exact pick-up bay in advance. Advantages: longest opening hours and widest availability. Disadvantages: peak-hour congestion around Kuta/Tuban and occasional waiting time if a shuttle or agent is required.
Kuta / Legian
Pros: close to the airport and many hotels; good for short rentals and quick getaways to the west coast. Cons: heavy traffic, limited parking, and slower driving times at most hours—collecting here can feel stressful in peak periods.
Seminyak
Pros: convenient for villa stays; plenty of services nearby; easy access to beach clubs and dining. Cons: narrow lanes and busy junctions; parking can be tight, and delivery/collection may incur an extra fee depending on the provider.

Bali Car Rental & Driving Guide

Essential answers for hiring a car and self-driving across Bali's roads, beaches and cultural heartland

Can I use my British driving licence to drive in Bali, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended alongside your full UK licence. Indonesian traffic police frequently request an IDP from foreign drivers, and without it you risk fines of up to IDR 1,000,000 (~£50). Your UK licence must be current and you must be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Bali. Some agencies also require a credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit.
Bali drives on the left — does that mean I can just get behind the wheel like at home?
Yes, technically left-hand traffic applies in both the UK and Bali, but the resemblance ends there. Balinese driving is far more chaotic than British roads: indicators are optional, overtaking on blind corners is common, and motorcycles weave between lanes at speed. Speed limits are rarely enforced and range from 50 km/h in towns to 80 km/h on open roads. Stay alert, honk before blind corners on mountain routes, and never assume other drivers will follow the rules.
What's the young driver surcharge for under-25s in Bali, and is it worth paying?
Most Bali rental agencies charge an additional IDR 150,000–300,000 (~£7–15) per day for drivers aged 21–24, on top of the base rental rate. At those prices it can be worth paying — but confirm exactly what is and isn't included, as many budget agencies have vehicles with high excess (up to IDR 5,000,000/~£250) and minimal insurance. Always take photos before departure regardless of the agency's reputation.
I plan to drive to Ubud and the central highlands. What road conditions should I expect?
The hilly roads around Ubud, Tegallalang and the volcano areas (Mount Batur, Mount Agung) are steep, narrow and heavily trafficked with scooters and minibusses. During the wet season (October–March), landslides can block routes without warning and some roads turn to deep mud. A high-clearance vehicle (SUV or MPV) is strongly recommended over a small city car. In heavy rain, reduce speed — visibility drops dramatically and surface water can hide potholes.
How do I pay for petrol in Bali and what fuel type does my rental car need?
Petrol stations in Bali sell subsidised Pertalite (RON 90) and Pertamax (RON 92). Your rental car will almost certainly run on petrol — diesel vehicles are rare in the rental market. Fill up at reputable Shell or Pertamina stations; some remote areas have only informal roadside fuel sellers of questionable quality. Full-to-full fuel policies are standard: collect the car full and return it full to avoid inflated refuelling charges.
What insurance do I really need when renting in Bali? Are the basics enough?
Basic liability insurance is mandatory and included in most rentals, but it typically covers very little. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) reduces your excess from IDR 5,000,000+ to IDR 500,000–1,000,000 (~£25–50), and is worth purchasing for IDR 100,000–200,000 (~£5–10) per day. Theft protection is also advisable — car theft, though uncommon, does occur. Avoid agencies that can't clearly explain their excess amount in writing before you sign.
