UK Traveller-Friendly
Banjul Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Hiring a car in and around Banjul can be a convenient way to manage short distances, day trips and airport transfers on your own schedule—especially if you are travelling with family, luggage or a fixed itinerary. However, availability, vehicle condition and inclusions can vary more than in the UK, so it pays to compare providers carefully, confirm what is included in writing (insurance, mileage, additional drivers), and inspect the vehicle before departure. For most visitors, the easiest pickup is at Banjul International Airport (BJL) near Yundum; downtown pickup can work well if you prefer to settle in first or want flexibility around accommodation.
Avis
OK Mobility
Banjul International Airport (BJL) – Arrivals Area
Best for immediate mobility after landing. Expect the widest choice available locally, but stock can be limited at peak times, so pre-booking and confirmation of meeting point are important. Advantages: straightforward transfer, easier luggage handling, often longer opening hours aligned with flights. Disadvantages: airport surcharges may apply, queues can occur on busy arrival waves, and some suppliers may operate via meet-and-greet rather than a traditional counter.
Banjul City Centre / Albert Market Area
Useful if you are already staying in central Banjul and want to collect later. Advantages: potential to avoid some airport fees, easier to compare the vehicle in daylight, convenient for local errands. Disadvantages: limited parking and heavier traffic at busy times, fewer vehicle options than the airport, and shorter opening hours may restrict same-day collection.
Marina Parade / Port Area
Practical for travellers connecting by ferry or visiting the waterfront. Advantages: good access to main routes out of the city and convenient for port-side plans. Disadvantages: availability can be patchy, and traffic flow can slow down around port activity; confirm exact handover point to avoid delays.

Driving in The Gambia: Honest Answers

Practical car hire and self-driving FAQs for UK travellers visiting Banjul and the coast

I'll be driving on the right for the first time coming from the UK - is it really that tricky in Banjul?
Yes, expect a genuine learning curve. Banjul's traffic is chaotic, with goats, taxis and unmarked junctions. The A1 coastal road and Trans-Gambia Highway are well-surfaced, but expect potholes on side streets. Drive slowly for the first two days, avoid driving after 19:00 when lighting is poor, and book an automatic if you usually drive a manual at home. Most hire cars are small Toyotas or Hyundai i10s - bigger cars are pointless in the capital.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in The Gambia?
Yes - your UK photocard licence and a 1968-style IDP are both mandatory. Most rental firms at Yundum International Airport, including Airport Rentals and Brymo, will refuse to hand over keys without both. The IDP costs £5.50 from the AA or RAC, is valid for 12 months, and must be carried with your passport. Photocopies are not accepted at the frequent police checkpoints along the coastal road.
Are Gambian roads really safe for first-time visitors, and is the coastal A1 worth driving?
The A1 from Banjul through Serekunda to Brufut is fine but heavily congested during the morning rush. The Trans-Gambia Highway has occasional potholes and unlit lorries at night. Avoid driving after 19:00 - night accidents involving pedestrians are the biggest risk. Sleep policemen (speed bumps) appear without warning in villages, often with faded paint. Keep below 50 km/h in towns and 80 km/h on open road - the limit is loosely enforced but overland checkpoints are common.
What's the honest truth about insurance and the £20-a-day 'SuperCover' upsell at the counter?
Basic third-party cover is included but pays out almost nothing - your damage excess can exceed £800. The full waiver, usually called SuperCover or Premium Cover, drops this to zero and is worth every penny, as gravel side roads and roaming goats regularly chip windscreens. Always photograph the roof, underside and all four wheels on collection - sand ingestion into the air filter and existing scratches are the two most common dispute topics at return.
Where can I refuel in Banjul, and will I be penalised for not returning the car full?
Forecourts cluster along Kairaba Avenue and around Serrekunda - look for Total, Shell and Galp. Petrol (never 'gas') and diesel are both available, currently around 65 GMD per litre, roughly £0.90. Most rental firms charge a refuelling fee of 20-25 GMD per litre on top of pump price if you don't return full. Fill up within 5 km of the airport - there is no 24-hour station on the immediate airport road.
Will I get stopped by the Gambian police, and what should I keep in the glove box?
Police checkpoints are common, especially on the Trans-Gambia Highway and near the Senegalese border at Karang. Keep your passport, IDP, UK licence, rental agreement and the insurance green card in a clear folder in the glove box. A polite attitude and a cold drink from your cooler goes a long way, but never offer cash - this can be construed as a bribe. Photocopies of documents are not accepted; colour copies of your UK licence are a sensible backup.
