Compare airport and town pick-ups, understand insurance and fees, and get on the road quickly—ideal for exploring the Oise region or driving onwards to Paris and northern France.

UK-to-France Essentials
Beauvais Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Beauvais is a convenient way to reach rural villages, châteaux and attractions in the Oise and Hauts-de-France without relying on limited local public transport. For many UK travellers, the simplest option is collecting at Beauvais–Tillé Airport (BVA), where opening hours and fleets are geared towards flight schedules. Town-centre pick-up can be better value and calmer, but you may need to align with shorter office hours and travel into Beauvais first. Expect to drive on the right, pay for French motorways (péage) on longer routes, and see speed enforcement via cameras. Common cost factors include excess/deposit levels, cross-border restrictions, one-way fees, young driver surcharges and fuel policy (full-to-full is usually best).

Beauvais–Tillé Airport (BVA) Car Rental Area
Best for UK arrivals on low-cost flights. Follow signs for car hire desks in/near the terminal, then proceed to the designated car park for vehicle collection. Pros: flight-aligned availability, wider choice, easier out-of-hours returns. Cons: can be busier at peak arrivals and sometimes pricier than town locations.
Beauvais City Centre (Around Gare SNCF / Central Streets)
Pros: often quieter pick-up, sometimes better weekday pricing, easier to inspect the car without airport rush. Cons: limited opening hours and fewer vehicle classes; you must first reach the city (taxi/bus) if arriving at BVA.
Beauvais Retail/Commercial Zones (Out-of-Town Branches)
Pros: straightforward road access, less congestion than the centre, good for longer rentals starting after a night in Beauvais. Cons: may require a taxi ride to reach; reduced weekend staffing and less flexibility for late returns.

Why Choose Beauvais–Tillé Airport (BVA) Pick-Up

Airport pick-up is typically the most convenient for UK travellers arriving by flight, with more suppliers on-site, clearer arrival-to-keys workflow, and simpler same-day collection. It can also be easier to arrange late returns aligned to early flights, and you’ll generally find a broader range of automatics, family cars and vans—though prices may rise during peak arrival waves.

Beauvais Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Practical answers on UK licences, A16 tolls, Crit'Air stickers and winter driving from Beauvais Airport

Will my UK photocard driving licence work in Beauvais, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your full UK photocard driving licence is valid in France for up to 12 months, so no IDP is required for short tourist trips. The paper counterpart was scrapped in 2015, so just carry the photocard plus a DVLA share code if you've lost the original. Major Beauvais Airport rental firms (Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Sixt) accept UK licences held for at least 12 months. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of €20-35 per day, and most operators set a minimum age of 21. Check that the licence address matches your passport or you'll be turned away at the desk.
Are there tolls on the A16 from Beauvais Airport to Calais or Paris?
The A16 motorway running north from Beauvais to Calais and the Channel ports is completely toll-free, so a day-trip drive to the coast costs nothing in péage. Heading south to Paris, however, you'll join the A1 near Roissy, which is fully tolled. Budget around €7-9 for a standard car, payable by credit card in télépéage lanes or cash in the orange 't' booths. Speed cameras are dense on the A1, with 130 km/h the limit in dry weather and 110 km/h in rain. Fines are issued to the registered keeper, and a 30 km/h excess costs €135.
Do I need a Crit'Air sticker to drive into Paris from Beauvais Airport?
Yes, Paris enforces a permanent low-emission zone (ZFE) covering the city inside the A86. To drive from Beauvais into the centre you must display a Crit'Air vignette, ordered online at certificat-air.gouv.fr at least two weeks before you travel. Cost is €3.72 plus €4.96 postage. Most modern petrol hire cars qualify for category 1 (green), and diesels from 2011 onwards for category 2. Automatic number-plate readers at every entry road check the database, and fines for non-compliance start at €68, rising to €135 for repeat offenders within 30 days. Stick it on the inside of the windscreen, lower right-hand corner.
My UK-registered car needs headlight beam deflectors in France; what about a rental car?
French-registered rental cars are left-hand drive with European-spec headlamps designed for continental driving, so no deflectors are needed, just check the manual beam-height switch on the dashboard. If you're bringing your own right-hand-drive UK car, however, you must fit stick-on beam deflectors (around £5 from Halfords) and display a 'UK' oval sticker, not the old 'GB' version. This new rule has been enforced since 2021. Police spot-checks happen, particularly after Channel ferry arrivals at Calais 150 km north of Beauvais, with on-the-spot fines starting at €90 for missing or wrongly sized stickers.
Will I need winter tyres or snow chains around Beauvais between December and March?
Beauvais lies in the Oise department of Picardy, and snow falls regularly between December and February, sometimes 10-15 cm overnight. Although Beauvais itself isn't in a designated massif zone, neighbouring communes in the Aisne and Somme departments fall under the Montagne Law, requiring winter tyres (M+S with the 3PMSF alpine symbol) or removable snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. Rental companies at Beauvais Airport usually include winter tyres on November-March bookings, so confirm at the desk. Carry a torch, a small shovel, a charged mobile, and a blanket. Allow double the usual driving time on the A16 when ice is forecast.
