Car Hire In Belize City, Belize: Competitive Prices, Confident Driving

Compare great-value options and use this practical guide to pick the right location (airport or downtown), understand insurance and fees, and get on the road smoothly from Belize City.

Practical Guide
Belize City Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Belize City is a convenient way to explore beyond the city limits—ideal for day trips and multi-stop itineraries where buses and shuttles may be slower or less flexible. For UK travellers, the main benefits are door-to-door freedom, easier luggage handling, and the ability to reach attractions on your own schedule. The trade-offs are that driving standards can vary, road lighting may be limited outside urban areas, and you’ll need to be comfortable with local traffic and occasional uneven road surfaces. Most visitors choose between collecting at the airport for immediate onward travel or picking up in town if you’re staying locally first and want to avoid airport surcharges.

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE)
The primary airport serving Belize City. Car hire desks/meet-and-greet services are commonly available around arrivals, making this the simplest option if you’re continuing straight to coastal resorts, inland lodges, or border areas. Pros: longer opening hours and quick access to main roads; cons: airport-related fees can apply and vehicle availability may be tighter in peak periods.
Belize City Centre (Albert Street & Downtown Core)
Convenient if you’re already staying in the city or arriving by water taxi/bus and want to collect later. Pros: potentially fewer airport surcharges and easier to compare nearby branches; cons: limited parking, heavier traffic at busy times, and shorter opening hours are common.
Fort Street Tourism Zone (near cruise/tour meeting points)
A practical pick-up area for travellers transitioning between day tours and city accommodation. Pros: walkable from central hotels and tour hubs; cons: congestion on ship days and limited space for inspecting vehicles thoroughly.

A compact hatchback slips through Belize City's narrow, potholed streets with ease and parks simply near the Swing Bridge. Air-conditioning tackles Caribbean humidity, while modest fuel use suits short hops along the Northern Highway to Crooked Tree or coastal villages. Ideal for two travellers with light luggage.

Belize's rainy season turns rural roads into muddy, flooded tracks, particularly around the Belize Zoo and along the Hummingbird Highway. A mid-size SUV offers reassuring ground clearance to cross waterlogged sections, plus air-con that copes with sticky 30°C days. Four-wheel-drive variants add grip on slippery jungle tracks to ATM Cave.

A double-cab pickup is the go-anywhere choice for travellers heading to Caracol or Mountain Pine Ridge in the Cayo District. High clearance and a sturdy 4x4 chassis handle corrugated limestone tracks, river crossings and cattle grids that would bottom out a saloon. The load bay swallows camping kit and dusty boots after Xunantunich.

Why Choose BZE Airport Pick-Up

Belize City Car Rental FAQs for UK Travellers

Driving rules, road conditions, insurance and border crossings explained for UK self-drive visitors

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Belize?
Yes, an IDP is mandatory for UK licence holders, even though Belize was a British colony. You must carry your valid UK photocard licence and a 1968-convention IDP at all times. Police spot checks are common, and major rental firms (Hertz, Crystal, Budget) will refuse to hand over keys without both documents. Apply through the AA or RAC online before flying out; the permit costs £5.50 and arrives within five working days. A notarised translation is not accepted in place of the IDP.
I drive on the left in the UK — how risky is switching to the right in Belize?
Genuinely risky during the first 24 hours. Belizean insurers cite head-on collisions caused by 'wrong-side' mistakes as the single biggest cause of tourist accidents. Roads outside Belize City are narrow, often unlit, and lined with vegetation, leaving no margin for error. Mitigate the risk by hiring an automatic (most roads are too rough for a manual), keeping speeds below 50 mph, and treating every junction as a danger point. Avoid night driving entirely for the first two days.
Are Belize's roads really as bad as people say, and should I drive after dark?
Honestly, yes — they are worse than most travellers expect. Belize City streets are heavily potholed, and the Western, Hummingbird and Southern Highways have unpaved sections, sudden unmarked speed bumps and wandering livestock. Outside the city, do not drive after dark: roads are unlit, junctions are invisible, and breakdowns become personal-safety issues. Allow at least 50% more journey time than Google Maps suggests, and carry a torch, water and a spare phone in case of trouble.
Does the rental company's basic insurance cover me, or should I pay for extras?
Standard CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) leaves you with a US$1,500–3,000 excess, which is steep given the rough surfaces. Buy the full 'zero excess' upgrade for US$15–25 per day — it is worth every dollar. Check that tyres, windscreen, roof and undercarriage are explicitly included, as these are commonly damaged on rural tracks and frequently excluded. UK credit-card policies rarely cover Belize, so do not rely on your Visa or Amex; buy local cover at the counter.
Can I take a hire car across the border into Guatemala or Tikal?
Yes, but only with written permission from the rental company and an extra fee of US$50–150. You must also buy mandatory local insurance at the border, costing another US$25–50. Most firms (Hertz, Crystal, Budget) permit crossings into Guatemala but refuse trips into Mexico's Quintana Roo. Belize-plated cars attract unwanted attention near border towns, so remove any rental stickers on arrival and avoid parking in isolated areas overnight. Carry your passport and vehicle paperwork at all times.
