UK Traveller Essentials
Bucharest Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Renting a car in Bucharest can be excellent value for UK travellers who want flexibility beyond the capital—day trips to Sinaia and Brașov, wine regions, or onward routes into Transylvania are much easier with your own wheels. In the city, traffic can be busy and parking takes planning, so a car is most convenient if you will be driving out of Bucharest or staying on the edge of the centre. Practical points for UK drivers: Romania drives on the right, roundabouts run anti-clockwise, and many rentals are manual—request an automatic early if needed. Carry your driving licence (and an IDP only if your licence is older paper format or as advised by your provider), plus your passport. Expect a security deposit on a credit card in the main driver’s name. For peace of mind, consider full cover with clear excess terms, and photograph the car (including wheels and glass) at pickup and return. Fuel policies are commonly “full-to-full”; keep the final receipt. If your plans are mostly central Bucharest, public transport and taxis/ride-hailing may be simpler—consider renting for the days you leave the city rather than for the entire stay.

Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) – Otopeni
Bucharest’s main airport and the most popular place to pick up a hire car. Most major brands have desks in the arrivals area, with vehicles typically collected from a nearby car park. Best for late arrivals, early departures, and fast access to the ring road and motorways. Pros: widest choice of vehicles, longer opening hours, easy onward travel. Cons: airport surcharges may apply, queues at peak times, and driving into the city can be slow during rush hour.
Piața Victoriei (Victory Square) / Aviatorilor Area
Popular for business districts and hotels, with relatively straightforward exits towards DN1 for airport and northbound trips. Pros: convenient if you’re staying in northern central Bucharest; good access for day trips without crossing the whole city. Cons: busy traffic at peak hours and paid parking can be limited nearby.
Gara de Nord (Bucharest North Railway Station)
Handy if you arrive by train and want to switch to a car for regional travel. Pros: easy multimodal connection; practical for one-way itineraries. Cons: congestion and complex road layout around the station; allow extra time for pickup and getting out of the area.

Bucharest rewards nimble wheels. A small hatchback slips into tight bays near Lipscani and the Old Town, sips fuel on stop-start traffic, and feels at home on day trips to Comana Natural Park or the lakes around Snagov. UK travellers will love an automatic gearbox.

Bucharest Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers for UK travellers on licences, vignettes, parking and winter driving in Romania

Can I drive in Romania with my UK driving licence? Do I need an IDP?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is valid for tourist stays under 90 days. The old paper-only licence is no longer accepted post-Brexit – you'll need a 1968 International Driving Permit, costing £5.50 from the RAC or AA. Always carry your passport, the licence and the rental agreement together; rental desks routinely refuse handovers if documents don't match the booking name. Most firms require you to have held your licence for at least 12 months, and drivers under 25 pay a young driver surcharge of €7-€15 per day.
How does the Romanian motorway vignette work? Where do I buy one?
Romania uses an electronic vignette called rovinieta – there are no toll booths on the A1, A2 or A3 motorways. For a standard car, a 7-day vignette costs about €3 and a 30-day one around €7. Buy online at roviniete.ro (PDF issued instantly) or at any Petrom, OMV or Rompetrol station at the till. The vignette is tied to the number plate, not the vehicle, so it transfers if you swap cars. Driving without one triggers a 250-500 RON fine (€50-€100), caught by ANPR cameras – don't chance it.
Is driving in Bucharest really that chaotic? What should UK drivers watch out for?
Yes – Bucharest traffic is famously aggressive, and UK drivers unused to right-hand traffic should be especially cautious in the first few days. Watch for trams (they have absolute priority and stop without warning), scooters filtering between lanes, sudden taxi stops, and one-way streets that change signs overnight. Rush hours 07:00-10:00 and 16:00-20:00 can double journey times, so avoid driving across the centre then. The historic Lipscani area is largely pedestrianised – use the metro or walk. Outside rush hour, Magheru and Kiseleff boulevards are manageable for visitors.
Are winter tyres mandatory in Romania, and what happens if I don't have them?
Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 November to 31 March whenever roads are snow- or ice-covered, including in Bucharest itself. Police can fine you up to 2,900 RON (about £500) and suspend your licence on the spot. Most rental firms in Romania include winter tyres automatically between November and March, but always check the contract before signing. If you plan to drive mountain roads such as the Transfăgărășan, Transalpina or the run up to Bran Castle in snow, carry snow chains; you can rent them cheaply in Brașov or Sibiu.
How do I pay for parking in central Bucharest without getting fined?
Central Bucharest uses blue zone paid parking, Mon-Sat 08:00-20:00, charged at 1-3 RON per hour depending on how close you are to the Old Town. Pay by SMS to 7455 (text the plate and zone number) or via the TPark app. Parking is free on Sundays and public holidays. Never park on pavements, in tram lanes or on bus stop markings – fines are 200-500 RON plus towing, and the tow-truck fee is another 200 RON. For overnight stays, use the Unirii or Intercontinental underground car parks instead of street parking.
