Cádiz Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Cádiz is a convenient way to explore the Costa de la Luz and wider Andalusia beyond the compact, walkable historic centre. A car makes it easier to reach beaches and towns such as El Palmar, Vejer de la Frontera and Tarifa, and to plan flexible day trips to Jerez, Seville or the white villages. For UK travellers, note that Spain drives on the right, most rentals are manual, and a credit card in the main driver’s name is commonly required for the deposit. City driving can be slower due to narrow streets, one-way systems and limited parking, so consider collecting the car only when you’re ready to leave the centre.
Jerez Airport (XRY) Car Rental Area
Nearest major airport to Cádiz (around 35–45 minutes by road). Rental desks are typically within the terminal or a short walk away; follow signs for “Rent a Car/Alquiler de coches”. Best choice for widest vehicle availability and straightforward motorway access towards Cádiz.
Cádiz Train Station (Estación de Cádiz) Area
Pros: convenient if arriving by rail; easy to start with a short local drive once you’ve checked in. Cons: traffic and one-way streets around the centre can be fiddly; parking may be limited and paid, especially in peak season.
Old Town / Centro Histórico (Near Plaza de España)
Pros: walkable access to hotels and apartments in the historic core; useful if you only want the car for selected days. Cons: narrow streets, restricted access zones and scarce parking can add time and stress; consider arranging a nearby car park first.

Cadiz's historic centre is famed for its tight, narrow lanes and scarce parking. A compact runabout slips through one-way streets, tucks into small bays, and sips fuel on short hops to La Caleta beach. Light steering and a small footprint make stop-start traffic around the harbour far less stressful for first-time visitors.

Enjoy over 300 days of Costa de la Luz sunshine, with summer temperatures often above 35°C. Dropping the roof along the seafront or heading south to Bolonia and Zahara de los Atunes turns a simple drive into the highlight of the day. Coastal breezes keep the cabin cool while you soak up Atlantic views.

Trips to Arcos de la Frontera, Grazalema and Ronda tackle twisting mountain roads in the Sierra de Cadiz. A small SUV offers a raised driving position for hairpin bends, roomy luggage space, and the confidence to handle rough or poorly lit rural lanes. Strong air-con is welcome relief on the long summer drive inland.

Cadiz Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Post-Brexit licence rules, motorway tolls, parking zones and speeding fines explained for driving in southern Spain

Does my UK driving licence work in Spain, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, you still need an IDP. Since Brexit, UK licence holders must carry both a valid UK photocard licence AND a 1968-convention International Driving Permit to drive legally in Spain. Without it, rental companies can refuse the handover, and the Guardia Civil can issue on-the-spot fines of €200 plus vehicle immobilisation. The IDP costs just £5.50 from the AA or RAC, is valid for 12 months and arrives within days. Photocopies are not accepted, so keep the original with your passport at all times behind the wheel.
Are there any toll motorways between Jerez Airport and Cadiz?
Mostly no, but plan ahead. The AP-4 linking Jerez Airport to Cadiz is currently toll-free, and most of Andalusia's motorways are also free. Spain still has toll autopistas marked with an 'AP' prefix, however, such as the AP-7 along the Mediterranean coast. Pay at manned or card-only booths — there is no nationwide electronic tag system for tourists. Foreign-plated rental cars pay the same rates, but the rental company may add a 25–30% service fee if you use a toll road, billed to your card days after the trip.
Where can I park in Cadiz's old town, and how does the blue zone work?
The Casco Antiguo is largely pedestrianised, with medieval streets too narrow for cars. Leave the vehicle in an underground car park such as Canalejas, Plaza de Sevilla or Muelle Reina Sofía — typical rates are €1.80–€2.20 per hour or €18–€25 per day. Outer districts use the blue zone (zona azul): pay via the Telpark or ElParking app, ticket machine or coins, Monday–Friday 9am–2pm and 5pm–8pm, free on Sundays and in August. Avoid yellow lines and loading bays — fines start at €90 and wheel-clamp teams are active.
How strict are speed cameras in Spain, and what do the fines cost?
Treat every limit as enforced. The DGT runs fixed Gatso cameras, mobile radar and average-speed sections on the A-4, A-48 and AP-4. Limits: 120 km/h on motorway, 90 km/h on national roads, 50 km/h in urban Cadiz. Speeding fines range from €100 to €600, with a 20% discount for payment within 20 days. Exceeding the limit by more than 20 km/h on a motorway costs €300 and 4 licence points. Rental firms pass on the fine plus a €30–€50 admin charge deducted from your deposit.
Can I hire a car at 22, and what is the 'young driver' surcharge?
Yes, with a daily surcharge. Most major firms (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt) accept drivers aged 21–24 but add €15–€25 per day for under-25s, usually capped at around €250 per rental. Some local suppliers refuse under-21s outright or charge €30+ per day. Drivers over 70 are not banned, but may face extra paperwork or insurance loading. Always declare your real age at booking — the young-driver fee is non-refundable if added at the counter, and hidden age surcharges remain one of the top rental complaints from UK travellers.
