Hire A Car In Calais, France — Competitive Prices, Clear Guidance

A practical, UK-focused guide to picking the right Calais pickup point (port or town), comparing options, and avoiding common extras such as excess, fuel charges and admin fees.

UK Traveller Essentials
Calais Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Calais is a convenient gateway for UK travellers arriving by ferry or shuttle and heading into northern France, Belgium or beyond. Hiring a car here can save time versus public transport, offers flexibility for coastal drives and day trips, and is often cost-effective when travelling as a couple, family or group. Expect right-hand traffic, roundabouts, and French toll roads (autoroutes) on longer routes. Make sure your rental includes the legally required safety kit where applicable and check cross-border permissions if you plan to drive into Belgium or other neighbouring countries. Common cost-traps are excess (the amount you pay if there’s damage), young-driver fees, after-hours pickup charges, one-way fees, and fuel policies that are not ‘full-to-full’. For the smoothest experience, book ahead, take photos at pickup/return, and allow extra time around sailing/shuttle schedules.
Port of Calais (Ferry Terminal) Car Hire Area
Best for UK arrivals by ferry: you can collect a car soon after disembarking and head straight onto the A16. Advantages: fast onward travel, ideal with luggage, easy access to main roads. Disadvantages: fewer desks than large airports, limited late-night staffing depending on sailing times, and availability can be tighter in peak holiday periods.
Calais Centre (near Gare de Calais-Ville)
Central pickup suited to travellers arriving by train or staying in town overnight. Pros: walkable access, easier to combine with rail travel, often simpler for returns if you stay centrally. Cons: city traffic at peak times, parking can be tighter, and some locations have limited weekend hours.
Boulevard Lafayette / Commercial Zones (Calais Retail Areas)
Out-of-centre offices can offer easier parking and quicker access to ring roads. Pros: simpler vehicle collection/inspection space, typically less congested than the centre. Cons: may require a taxi/bus to reach, and can be inconvenient without a car already.

Calais is the main gateway for Le Shuttle and ferry arrivals, and a medium hatchback handles the long Channel Tunnel approach and tight ferry car decks with ease. Fuel stays modest for the A16 and A26 autoroutes, and the elevated seating helps on long motorway stretches into Belgium. Boot space easily takes two cabin bags and a couple of holdalls after a crossing. A solid all-rounder for cross-Channel couples and small families.

The Côte d'Opale stretch from Cap Blanc-Nez to Cap Gris-Nez is one of the most scenic cliff drives in northern Europe, and a convertible makes the most of those sea views. Roof-down cruising on the D940 lets you catch the salt air on sunny summer afternoons. Light steering and a tight turning circle are ideal for the narrow lanes around Wissant and Escalles. Best enjoyed in warmer months when the Channel breeze is mild.

Travellers heading south to Bruges, Reims or onward to the Alps benefit from an SUV's higher ride and stable cornering on sustained autoroute speeds. Extra luggage room handles winter sports gear or a fortnight of suitcases for multi-country tours. Cruise control and a quieter cabin reduce fatigue on three- to five-hour driving days. A reassuring choice for British and Irish visitors planning longer European itineraries.

Calais Car Hire FAQs: What UK Drivers Must Know

Practical answers on licences, motorway tolls, Crit'Air stickers and one-way rentals for British motorists driving out of Calais

Do UK drivers need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive out of Calais?
Short answer: yes. Since 1 January 2021, your UK photocard licence is no longer recognised on its own in France. You must also carry a 1968-vintage IDP - the 1949 version no longer counts. Get one from the RAC or AA for about £5.50 before you cross. The gendarmerie can fine you €90-€750 on the spot, and most Calais hire desks will not hand over the keys without seeing it.
What's the single biggest mistake British drivers make leaving Calais?
Driving on the left, and it catches almost everyone out within the first kilometre. France drives on the right, and the roads around the ferry port and Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles are wide, fast and unforgiving. Rehearse the right-hand gear change before you leave the terminal, and expect a jolt of panic on the first roundabout. Take it easy for the first 30 minutes, and follow the A16 signs for Boulogne/Paris - the slip-road decision comes at you fast.
How do I pay motorway tolls heading south from Calais?
The A16 from Calais to Abbeville is toll-free, but everything south of there is péage. Cash and credit cards are accepted at every staffed booth; foreign cards sometimes glitch, so carry €20-€30 in small notes as backup. A 'télépéage' electronic tag costs €2-€3 per day to rent (€20-€30 to buy) and lets you sail through the orange lanes - well worth it if you're driving past Paris toward the south or the Alps.
Do I need a Crit'Air sticker if I'm only passing through Calais?
Not for Calais itself, but you must have one before entering any French low-emission zone (Lille, Paris, Lyon, Reims, Rouen...), and rental cars on foreign plates are checked regularly by automatic plate-readers. Order online at certificat-air.gouv.fr - €3.72 for the vignette plus €4.84 postage to a UK address - and stick it on the inside of the windscreen at least three weeks before you travel. Driving without one risks a €68-€135 on-the-spot fine.
Can I pick up a car in Calais and return it in Folkestone or Dover?
Yes - it's a very common one-way route. Europcar, Hertz, Avis and Enterprise all have desks at the Eurotunnel terminal in Coquelles, and most will let you drop the car at the UK side of Le Shuttle. Expect a cross-border fee of €150-€300, plus the firm's Le Shuttle booking at around £90-£130 per car. Book 24-48 hours ahead, and check whether they require a right-hand-drive swap at Folkestone, which adds cost and an extra hour.
