UK Traveller Focus
Calama Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up and What To Expect
Hiring a car in Calama is one of the most convenient ways to explore northern Chile, especially if you’re using Calama as a gateway to the Atacama Desert and nearby mining and high-altitude areas. For travellers from the United Kingdom, driving is straightforward with a full UK photocard licence (carry your passport and rental agreement), but you should expect long distances, very dry conditions, strong sun and occasional high-altitude routes. Most visitors choose airport pick-up for speed and vehicle choice, while downtown pick-up can be cheaper and suits those staying locally first. Always check the fuel policy, the security deposit (usually held on a credit card), what’s included in the excess/waiver, and whether gravel roads are permitted—many scenic routes are paved, but diversions and viewpoints may involve unsealed surfaces.

Calama Airport (CJC) – El Loa Airport Car Rental Area
The main and most popular pick-up point. Counters are typically located in or near the arrivals area, with vehicles collected from the adjacent car park. Best for late arrivals, early departures and widest fleet availability. Advantages: maximum choice of vehicles and opening hours; easy navigation from arrivals; ideal for onward travel the same day. Disadvantages: prices can be higher than in-town; queues at peak flight times; stricter condition checks on return.
Calama City Centre (Plaza 23 de Marzo Area)
A central option for travellers staying overnight in Calama before driving onward. Pick-up is usually from small offices near the main square, with vehicles parked nearby. Pros: can be better value than the airport; easier to inspect the car carefully in daylight; convenient if you arrive by coach or already have accommodation in town. Cons: more limited opening hours; fewer vehicle categories; you may need a taxi to collect/return outside the core area.
Avenida Balmaceda / Main Commercial Corridors
Several rental providers and local agencies operate along major arteries that run through Calama, offering practical access and road connections. Pros: straightforward access to main routes out of town; sometimes quicker service than airport desks; easier parking than the immediate centre. Cons: location varies by supplier; signage can be inconsistent; walking access may be less comfortable with luggage.

Calama Car Hire: UK Driver FAQs

Practical answers for UK travellers hiring a car or 4x4 to explore northern Chile's Atacama Desert, geyser fields and Bolivian border

Can I drive in Chile with my UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard licence is technically valid in Chile for tourist stays up to 180 days, but in practice every major rental desk at Calama airport will ask for an International Driving Permit — the 1968 Geneva version, not the 1949 one. Order it from the DVLA online for £5.50, allowing 15 working days, or pay extra for the same-day Post Office service. Without an IDP, firms such as Hertz, Sixt and Avis will refuse the booking outright, regardless of what their website suggests.
I'm used to driving on the left — how big a deal is switching sides in Chile?
It's a complete mirror image: right-hand traffic, left-hand-drive cars, and you'll instinctively drift across the white line. Allow at least the first day to acclimatise, particularly on roundabouts where you give way to traffic already circulating (the opposite of the UK rule) and on rural two-lane overtakes. Automatics are common in Calama but book well ahead for July–August; manuals are cheaper, more plentiful and often the default at smaller local agencies. A few minutes in the airport car park is well worth it.
Are the roads to El Tatio, the high-altitude lagoons and the salt flats safe in a normal saloon?
The route to El Tatio geysers (4,320 m) is tarmac for the first 30 km, then ripio (gravel) — passable in a saloon if you keep speeds below 40 km/h. The Miscanti, Miñiques and Altiplanic lagoons (3,800–4,500 m) are partly unpaved, and a 4x4 is the wise choice. January–March brings flash-flood risk in dry riverbeds. Spend 24 hours acclimatising in Calama (2,260 m) before driving higher, and never set out after dark — there are no streetlights and livestock wanders at will.
Can I take a Calama hire car across the border to Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia?
Almost certainly not — Hertz, Sixt, Avis and Budget all prohibit Bolivian crossings, and your insurance becomes void the moment you cross. A handful of local Calama agencies do offer 4x4s with Bolivian insurance and paperwork included, typically at USD 80–120 per day and a USD 1,500–2,000 deposit. The popular alternative is to leave the car in San Pedro de Atacama and join a three-day Uyuni overland tour from there. If you do cross, ensure a multiple-entry Chilean stamp and carry cash for impromptu border fees.
How far between petrol stations from Calama, and do I really need to return the car full?
Calama's 24-hour stations (Copec, Shell, Petrobras) cluster on Avenida Balmaceda, but beyond San Pedro de Atacama the next reliable pump is roughly 350 km away on the Bolivian border. Always refuel in Calama or San Pedro before any desert excursion, and pack a 10-litre jerry can for the high-altitude lagoons. Contracts are full-to-full: return the tank topped up or face a refuelling surcharge of CLP 25,000–40,000 plus a per-litre premium, often double the pump price. Diesel cars are rare; petrol (93 or 95 octane) is the norm.
How much will my credit card be blocked, and is the basic insurance enough in the desert?
The CDW bundled into Chilean rentals excludes tyres, windscreen, roof and underbody — exactly the damage you'll risk on Atacama's ripio. Budget USD 15–25 per day for full coverage with zero excess, or check first whether your UK credit card or annual travel policy already includes rental excess cover. Rental desks pre-authorise USD 500–2,000 depending on vehicle class, so bring a Visa or Mastercard with a healthy limit; Amex is sometimes declined. Photograph every panel, the wheels and the dashboard at pickup — disputes are far easier to win with timestamped evidence.
