UK Traveller Essentials
Calvi Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Hiring a car in Calvi is one of the easiest ways to explore Balagne and the wider island of Corsica on your own schedule, especially for beaches, hilltop villages and scenic drives where public transport can be limited or seasonal. For travellers from the United Kingdom, driving is straightforward but different: you drive on the right, most cars are manual, and narrow roads plus tight parking are common in peak summer. Book early for July–August, check whether your accommodation offers parking, and review your insurance and fuel policy carefully to avoid surprises at the desk. In Corsica, allow extra time for mountain routes and be cautious after dark on rural roads.

Calvi Sainte-Catherine Airport (CLY) – Arrivals Car Hire Area
Best for immediate pickup after landing. Typically a small, walkable setup with desks around arrivals and cars parked nearby. Good availability for flight times, but choice can be limited in peak weeks and prices can be higher than town. Check opening hours if arriving late and confirm whether keys are collected at the desk or via a lockbox.
Calvi Town Centre (Port/Marina Area)
Pros: convenient if you arrive by ferry or stay near the waterfront; easier to compare on foot and return without entering the airport. Cons: parking and traffic can be challenging in summer; limited out-of-hours returns and stock may sell out quickly at weekends.
Calvi Railway Station (Gare de Calvi) / Central Neighbourhoods
Pros: handy if you are connecting by train (Tramway/rail) or staying inland from the marina; often calmer than the port roads. Cons: shorter desk hours are common; you may need to walk to the vehicle bay and space for luggage can be tight on nearby streets.

A convertible suits Calvi's sun-soaked summers and the winding coastal roads of the Balagne. Drop the roof along the cliffs between Calvi and l'Île-Rousse, breathe in the maquis-scented air, and stop easily at any beach. Parking in the old harbour remains manageable in a small cabriolet. Choose one for sheer seaside atmosphere and unforgettable views.

Inland from Calvi the roads climb quickly into the Corsican hills, threading through villages such as Sant'Antonino, Pigna and Aregno on tight, twisting lanes. A small hatchback handles hairpin bends and stone-arched village squares with far less stress than a longer vehicle. Fuel costs stay modest and parking in hilltop hamlets is simple and stress-free.

Travelling with family or friends from Calvi Airport means luggage, beach gear and perhaps a buggy. A people-carrier or van gives everyone a proper seat and generous boot space, yet remains comfortable on longer runs to Calanques de Piana or the Désert des Agriates. Air-conditioning helps on hot, dusty summer days.

Driving in Calvi: FAQs

UK-driver essentials for hiring a car in Calvi and exploring Corsica's mountain and coastal roads

Do I need an international driving permit to hire a car in Calvi with my UK photocard licence?
Yes. Your UK photocard licence is valid in France, but you must also carry a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) — the 1949 version is no longer accepted. Buy one from the AA or RAC for about £5.50 before you fly. Most Calvi-Sainte-Catherine airport desks (Hertz, Avis, Sixt) will refuse to hand over the keys without it, and a roadside check on the RT50 towards Calenzana can land you with a €90 on-the-spot fine. Photocopies and post-office "translations" are not acceptable.
Will the mountain passes around Calvi be open in winter, and do I need snow chains?
The two high passes linking Calvi to Ajaccio and Bastia — Col de Vergio (1,478 m) and Col de Vizzavona (1,163 m) — typically close after the first heavy snowfall, often from late November until April. Chains are not legally compulsory, but most Calvi hire firms will not let cars cross the central ridge in winter without winter tyres or chains, supplied at €30-45 per day. Carry water and a charged phone: mobile signal disappears in the Forêt de Valdu-Niellu, and the next garage can be 60 km away.
Are there any motorway tolls on Corsica, and do I need a Crit'Air sticker?
No. Every road in Corsica is toll-free, including the entire RT network — there is no péage, no télépéage tag needed, and no vignette. Crit'Air is not enforced in Calvi. However, if you plan to drive on the French mainland afterwards, order a Crit'Air sticker (€3.72 incl. postage) from certificat-air.gouv.fr at least a month before travel and stick it on the nearside of the windscreen. Low Emission Zones in Paris, Lyon and Grenoble can fine you up to €135 for driving without one.
Where is the best place to park in Calvi, and how much does it cost?
Avoid the citadel: the cobbled lanes are pedestrianised 10:00-19:00 in July and August. The two main options are the covered Port de Plaisance car park (€2/hr, €18 per 24 hr) and the open-air lot by the railway station (€1.20/hr, free after 20:00). Free white-line bays appear along Quai Landry outside peak season. Always photograph all four corners of the car on collection and return; tight quayside spaces and the ferry queue regularly produce minor scratches that the hire company will bill you for.
What are the speed limits in Corsica, and what happens if a camera catches me?
Open roads are capped at 80 km/h (reduced from 90 km/h in 2018), 50 km/h in built-up areas, and 30 km/h near schools. Fixed and section-average cameras are common on the RT10 and the approaches to Bastia. A minor speeding offence is €68; at 50 km/h or more over the limit you can be fined €1,500, lose six licence points and have the offence reported to the DVLA. Pay within 46 days at antai.gouv.fr to avoid surcharge.
