Cambridge Car Hire Guide: Where To Collect And What To Expect
Hiring a car in Cambridge is a practical way to explore the surrounding villages, National Trust sites, the Fens and the East Anglian coast, where public transport can be less direct. Within central Cambridge, however, traffic management, limited parking and busy cycling routes mean a car is often best used for day trips and travel beyond the inner centre rather than short hops across town. For UK residents, the process is straightforward: bring your driving licence (and a payment card in the main driver’s name), plan for a security deposit, and check insurance excess levels carefully. Always review the fuel policy (full‑to‑full is typically simplest), clarify mileage limits, and inspect the car at pick‑up and return to avoid damage disputes.

London Stansted Airport (STN) – Car Rental Village
Commonly the most convenient airport for Cambridge. Follow signs to the Car Rental Village (usually reached by shuttle or a short walk depending on operator). Pros: wide choice of suppliers, longer hours, good availability of automatics and larger cars. Cons: airport location surcharge, busier queues at peak times, and you still have a drive to Cambridge (allow extra time for traffic).
Cambridge Railway Station Area (Station Road / CB1)
A convenient pick‑up point if you arrive by train. Pros: easy onward access to main roads, handy for luggage, and typically simpler than driving into the historic core. Cons: parking and traffic can be busy at peak times, and some offices have limited weekend hours.
Cambridge City Centre (near colleges and shopping streets)
Best for travellers already staying centrally who want quick access to a car for day trips. Pros: walkable from many hotels and attractions. Cons: narrow streets, heavy cycling traffic, limited parking, and potential access restrictions—collection/return can be slower and more stressful.

Cambridge's medieval streets, tight corners near the colleges and expensive central car parks all favour a compact car. A small hatchback slips into pay-and-display bays, costs less in fuel and is far easier to park by King's College or the River Cam. It is also ideal for short hops between museums, gardens and nearby villages like Grantchester. Travellers from the UK and overseas will appreciate the modest daily rate.

A mid-size SUV is the most versatile pick for families visiting Wimpole Hall, Anglesey Abbey or the Norfolk coast from Cambridge. The raised seating helps on the A14 and M11, and the boot swallows pushchairs, picnic gear and walking boots. It copes comfortably with country lanes through the Cambridgeshire Fens, where the surface can be uneven. Automatic transmission is widely available and suits relaxed touring.

Cambridge Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers on licences, parking, fuel, charges and driving rules in and around the university city

Can I use my overseas driving licence to hire a car in Cambridge?
Yes, but the paperwork depends on where the licence was issued. EU and EEA licences are accepted with no extra document. Visitors from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and most other non-EU countries must also carry a 1949 or 1968 International Driving Permit, obtainable from your home motoring association before travel. Most rental firms require the licence to be at least 12 months old, and you must be 21 or over. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver fee of roughly £25 to £35 a day, and the maximum hire age is often 75.
What's the trickiest thing about driving in Cambridge city centre?
The historic centre is partly pedestrianised, threaded with narrow medieval lanes, bus-only streets and one-way systems controlled by rising bollards. Most visitors leave the car at one of five Park & Ride sites on the M11, A14 and A10 (about £4.40 return for up to seven people) and continue by bus. Central car parks such as Grand Arcade, Lion Yard and Park Street charge £2.40 to £4.00 an hour, up to around £25 a day. Free 30-minute bays exist but are fiercely contested. Don't follow sat-nav blindly — many shortcuts end in bollards or £70 PCNs.
Are there any congestion or clean-air charges for driving into Cambridge?
There is no London-style Congestion Charge, but Cambridge does run a small Clean Air Zone covering most of the city centre — for now it applies only to buses, coaches and HGVs, not private cars. For most visitors the real cost is parking: central car parks typically run £2.40 to £4.00 an hour, around £25 for a full day. Many central streets are residents-only and patrolled by CCTV, so a single mis-stopped minute can mean a £70 Penalty Charge Notice. Outside the centre, supermarket and Park & Ride parking is far cheaper.
How do I pay for fuel, and what about electric charging around Cambridge?
Almost every filling station on the A14, A10 and M11 accepts contactless cards, so you don't need cash or a UK account. E10 unleaded is the new standard; older cars may still need E5, both are clearly labelled on the pump. Diesel pumps are usually black-and-green. Cambridge has more than 100 public chargers, including 50 kW rapid CCS units at Trumpington Park & Ride and the Grafton Centre, plus Tesla Superchargers at Cambridge Services (Junction 25 of the M11). Return the car on a full-to-full basis within 10 miles of the depot to avoid a £20-plus refuelling charge.
What are the speed limits and how are they enforced around Cambridge?
The national defaults are 30 mph in built-up areas, 60 mph on single-carriageway roads and 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways, unless signs say otherwise. Average-speed cameras monitor the A14 and the M11 Junction 11 spur into the city, and fixed Gatso cameras cover the ring road. A 1 to 5 mph overshoot can mean a £100 fine and three licence points; serious speeding is handled in magistrates' court and can lead to a ban. Fines can follow overseas visitors back home, so stick to the limits and watch for the many 20 mph zones near schools.
Can I take the hire car to Scotland, Wales or across to France?
Driving anywhere within the UK — England, Wales or Scotland — is fine at no extra cost, and your standard insurance covers it. Crossings to Northern Ireland or the Republic work too, though you must tell the rental company in case a ferry surcharge applies. Trips into France or other EU countries usually need written permission, a Green Card insurance extension (about £30 to £60 per week) and headlight-beam deflectors in the vehicle. Some firms refuse cross-Channel rentals outright, so check the small print before booking; a single unauthorised border crossing can void your cover.
