Car Hire In Chihuahua, Mexico: Great Value, Simple Pick-Up

Compare competitive prices and use this practical UK-focused guide to collect at the airport or downtown, choose the right cover, and avoid common extras and fuel pitfalls.

UK Traveller Essentials
Chihuahua Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Chihuahua gives you the freedom to travel beyond the city at your own pace—useful for day trips, business parks, and routes where public transport can be limited. Driving is on the right and road signage is generally easy to follow, but allow extra time for urban traffic, speed bumps (topes), and occasional police checkpoints. For UK travellers, the key is choosing sensible insurance, understanding deposit requirements (usually a credit card in the main driver’s name), and confirming fuel policy and mileage before you collect. Aim to photograph the vehicle at pick-up and return, keep a copy of the rental agreement handy, and plan refuelling in advance, especially if returning at peak times.

General Roberto Fierro Villalobos International Airport (CUU) Car Rental Area
The most convenient option after landing. Follow signs for “Car Rental/Alquiler de autos” inside the terminal, then proceed to the desks. Airport returns are usually well signposted; allow extra time to refuel and complete the check-in. Pros: quick access after arrival, broad choice of cars, easier after-hours logistics. Cons: can be pricier than city branches, queues at busy arrival periods, stricter checks on cards/insurance.
Zona Centro (Historic Centre) Branches
Good if you’re staying centrally and prefer to collect once you’re settled. Pros: easier to reach by taxi or on foot, sometimes better base rates than the airport. Cons: limited parking for collection/return, heavier traffic at peak hours, shorter opening hours.
Distrito Uno / Periférico de la Juventud Area
Popular modern business and hotel area with road links to main arteries. Pros: convenient for corporate stays, quicker access to ring roads, often easier parking than the historic centre. Cons: not as walkable from older central hotels, availability can be lower at weekends.

The Copper Canyons demand an SUV for winding mountain roads, steep descents and the occasional unpaved stretch. High clearance handles rocky pull-offs at Divisadero and Creel with ease. A strong air-con system copes with sharp temperature swings at altitude, while the elevated seating frames the canyon rim beautifully. A roomy boot swallows hiking kit and supplies for remote Sierra Tarahumara stretches.

Long desert drives across the Chihuahuan plateau demand a fuel-efficient medium saloon that shrugs off baking tarmac temperatures. Crisp air-con, supportive seats and a smooth manual gearbox make light work of straight, monotonous federal highways. A generous boot accommodates luggage for multi-stop itineraries, and modest running costs leave more pesos for street tacos. A reliable all-rounder for first-time UK visitors.

Chihuahua's colonial centre features narrow one-way lanes and tight bays around the cathedral and Plaza de Armas, where a compact hatchback truly earns its keep. A small car slips into modest spaces with minimal kerb-side fuss and sips fuel during stop-start urban traffic. Light controls suit drivers adjusting to local signage, and evening rush hour becomes far less stressful. Affordable daily rates free up budget for markets and asado.

Chihuahua Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers for UK drivers hiring and self-driving across northern Mexico's deserts and the Copper Canyon

Can I use my UK driving licence in Chihuahua, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Both. Your UK photocard licence is valid in Mexico, but you must also carry a 1968-format International Driving Permit (IDP) - the AA or RAC issues one for £5.50 and it arrives in a few days. Federal police checkpoints on rural roads routinely ask foreign drivers to produce it, and most rental desks (Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, local Mex and America) will not hand over the keys without the IDP physically present. Photocopies or digital scans are not accepted.
How do I pay tolls on the motorways between Chihuahua City and Creel?
Stick to the "cuotas" (toll motorways) - they are properly surfaced and patrolled, unlike the "libres". Tolls on the Chihuahua–Creel corridor run 200–400 MXN per section, paid in cash pesos at staffed booths; foreign cards are almost never taken. There is no nationwide electronic tag for short-stay tourists, so a TAG/IAVE account only makes sense for trips over two weeks. Carry small notes and coins - weekend queues at La Junta or Cuauhtémoc can easily run 20–30 minutes.
What are the real driving risks in Chihuahua - bandits, deserts, or just tiredness?
Honestly, fatigue is the biggest one: Chihuahua City to Creel is 350 km and 5–6 hours, and the next fuel station may be 80 km away. Sudden summer "tormentas" whip up dust and flash-flood the dips, so visibility can drop to almost nothing in seconds. Stray cattle and horses are common on rural "libre" roads. Drive only in daylight, top up at every Pemex, and avoid the Sierra Tarahumara after dark - stick to tolled motorways at night.
I'm 23 - will I be charged a young driver fee, and is there a maximum age?
Yes - expect a young driver surcharge of 200–350 MXN per day at Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Mex and America. The minimum rental age is 21 (sometimes 25 for large SUVs), and you usually need at least one year of licence. There is no formal upper age limit, but drivers over 70–75 are routinely refused by smaller local agencies. Book with an international chain if you are 70+, carry your licence plus IDP, and expect a closer vehicle inspection on collection.
Is the basic insurance enough, or should I buy the full collision waiver?
The mandatory third-party liability bundled into Mexican rentals (around 100,000–500,000 MXN) is far below UK norms, and the on-desk CDW still leaves an excess of 10,000–25,000 MXN for everyday 15–25% per-day upgrades. Buy a standalone UK motor excess policy first (iCar, World Nomads, Questor) for £30–60 - it reimburses the excess and, crucially, covers tyres, windscreen and roof, which the Mexican CDW excludes. Photograph every panel, the roof and all four wheels before driving off.
