UK Traveller Essentials
Chios Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Chios is one of the easiest ways to see the island beyond Chios Town, from quieter beaches to mountain villages and masticha-producing areas. Public transport can be limited outside peak times and may not suit short stays or early/late plans. For most UK travellers, collecting a car at Chios Airport is the most straightforward option, while downtown pickup can work well if you are staying in town and prefer to avoid driving immediately after landing. Expect narrow lanes in villages, tighter parking in the centre, and more relaxed local driving styles than in the UK, so choosing the right vehicle size and insurance cover can make the trip far simpler.

Chios Island National Airport (JKH) — Arrivals Area
Best for quick onward travel and maximum choice on arrival. Pros: convenient pickup right after landing, longer opening hours in season, and easier to start your trip with luggage. Cons: may cost slightly more than town pickup and queues can form around flight arrivals; late returns can incur after-hours fees if pre-arranged.
Chios Town Port Area (Ferry Terminal Vicinity)
Handy for travellers arriving by ferry or staying near the waterfront. Pros: walkable from many hotels, easy for island-hopping schedules, and you can inspect the car in daylight. Cons: busy traffic at peak times, limited parking nearby, and some offices have shorter hours than the airport.
Chios Town Centre (Near Main Shopping Streets)
Good if you want to settle in first and collect later. Pros: convenient if you are already staying centrally and may be slightly cheaper than airport rates. Cons: narrow streets, one-way systems, and parking can be difficult; pickup can take longer during busy periods.

Chios Car Hire FAQs

Road rules, licences and island driving tips for self-drivers

Can I drive in Chios on my UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes - your full UK photocard licence is accepted in Greece for stays of up to 12 months and no IDP is required after Brexit. Most rental firms set a minimum age of 21, and 23 for larger cars, so under-25s pay a young-driver surcharge of €7-15 per day. Bring the licence plus a second photo ID, expect a credit-card pre-authorisation of €300-500, and ask for a Category B (small) car if you've only held your licence a year.
How tight and dangerous are the mountain roads in southern Chios really?
Tight in places, but manageable if you take it steady. The lanes threading through Mesta, Avgonyma and the southern mastic villages are single-track, walled on both sides, and drop sharply to olive groves. Keep below 40 km/h on blind bends, expect oncoming coaches on Saturdays, and avoid driving after sunset - junctions are unmarked and village lighting is poor. Wild goats wander onto the tarmac at dawn and dusk, so ease off then too.
Where do I fill up, and what grade of petrol does a hire car in Chios take?
Petrol stations cluster around Chios Town, Thymiana, Kardamyla and along the airport road - the south of the island has none. Most close from mid-afternoon on Sundays, so always refuel the night before. Most island cars run on unleaded 95 (amólyvdi 95); diesels (petrélaio) are common and slightly cheaper. Return the car with a full tank or face a refuelling fee of around €1.80 per litre plus a service charge.
Is the basic CDW enough, or should I pay for the full excess waiver?
The standard Collision Damage Waiver still leaves you with a €600-1,200 excess, and Chios offers plenty of opportunities to test that - stone walls, goat herds, narrow village lanes and a thick coat of summer dust. Zero-excess upgrades cost €8-18 a day and are well worth the peace of mind. Check whether your UK credit card already includes collision cover before paying extra, and photograph the car on collection and return.
Can I take the rental car on the ferry to Psara or Inousses?
Almost always no. Major brands (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Enterprise) and most local firms prohibit ferry crossings unless you buy a written ferry permit for €50-100, and even then the hire insurance is void the moment the car is off Chios. Both Psara and Inousses are tiny and road-free in parts - hire a scooter, quad or small 4x4 locally on arrival, and leave the main hire car at the Chios quay.
