UK Traveller Essentials
Colombo Car Rental Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Renting a car in Colombo can be a convenient way to reach beach towns, cultural sites and hill-country routes on your own timetable, especially if you plan multiple stops or are travelling with family. However, central Colombo traffic can be busy, road etiquette differs from the UK, and parking may be limited in commercial areas. Many visitors choose an airport pickup for the quickest start after landing, while others prefer a city pickup to avoid driving immediately after a long-haul flight. For UK licence holders, bring your photocard licence and passport; check whether your rental provider requires an International Driving Permit or a local driving permit (requirements can vary). Always confirm what is included (insurance, mileage, taxes, driver fees) and the fuel policy, as these are common sources of unexpected costs.

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) – Katunayake
The main gateway for Colombo. Most renters collect near the arrivals area or via a short shuttle to off-airport lots. Pros: longest opening hours and widest vehicle choice, easy for late arrivals, straightforward onwards access to the E03 motorway. Cons: prices can be slightly higher, queues at peak arrival waves, and you may face city traffic if heading into central Colombo during rush hour.
Colombo Fort (Business District)
Pros: handy if you are staying in central hotels or arriving by train/bus; good for one-way plans starting after a few city days. Cons: heavy congestion, limited kerbside space, and pickups can take longer due to traffic and security/parking restrictions.
Bambalapitiya (Galle Road Corridor)
Pros: convenient for coastal routes south towards Mount Lavinia, Negombo via city roads, or continuing to the Southern Expressway; often easier access than Fort. Cons: busy arterial road with frequent stops; parking near shops and apartments can be tight.

Colombo's streets are notoriously congested, with narrow lanes, tuk-tuks weaving about and parking spaces at a premium. A compact saloon slips effortlessly through traffic, costs next to nothing in petrol, and is simple to park near Fort, Pettah and the Galle Face promenade. Air-conditioning is essential in the tropical humidity, and a small car delivers it without burning through fuel. Ideal for one or two travellers sticking mostly to the capital and its immediate suburbs.

Beyond Colombo lie the sandy coastal routes to Negombo, Bentota and Galle, plus the winding hill climbs to Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. An SUV offers the higher ground clearance needed for occasional potholed stretches, flooded monsoon lanes and gravel park-ups near national parks such as Udawalawe or Yala. The elevated seating also makes it easier to peer over hedges and lorries on Sri Lanka's busy A-class roads. A sensible pick for couples or small families planning a multi-stop island loop.

Auto

Sri Lanka is a popular choice for multi-generational family holidays and small friend groups, often travelling with bulky luggage, prams and beach gear. A seven-seater van keeps everyone together, swallows the suitcases without roof racks, and the powerful air-conditioning copes with the 30°C-plus heat. Sliding doors make school-run-style stops at spice gardens and tea factories far easier. Perfect for those splitting costs who value space and a relaxed journey over sporty handling.

Pick Up At CMB For Maximum Convenience After Landing

Airport pickup suits UK travellers arriving on long-haul flights, especially with luggage or late-night arrivals. You will typically see the broadest choice of vehicles, longer operating hours, and clearer handover processes. It can also reduce transfer costs into the city if you plan to drive straight to your first stop (for example, Negombo, the Cultural Triangle, or the south coast).

Driving in Colombo: FAQs Before You Hire a Car

Essential answers about licences, roads, tolls, insurance and driving conditions in Sri Lanka

Can I use my UK driving licence in Sri Lanka, or do I need an IDP?
Yes, a valid UK photocard licence is accepted in Sri Lanka for short stays (up to 30 days), provided you also carry a printed English translation. Many rental firms at Bandaranaike International Airport will still ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP), so get one from the AA before you fly — it costs about £5.50 and takes minutes online. You must have held the licence for at least 1 year, and most suppliers set a minimum age of 21, with drivers under 25 paying a young-driver surcharge of roughly LKR 1,500–2,500 per day.
Is it safe to drive from Colombo to Kandy or Galle? What are the roads really like?
Driving in Sri Lanka is on the left, which unsettles most UK visitors at first. The A1 coastal road to Galle is flat and generally well-maintained, taking 1.5–2 hours for 125 km, but expect heavy lorries, tuk-tuks weaving, and buses that stop without warning. The Colombo–Kandy A1 climbs through Kegalle with hairpin bends, slow lorries and the occasional elephant on the verge near the hill country — drive in daylight only and keep speeds around 40–50 km/h. After dark, avoid unlit stretches; the AA and most hire firms genuinely recommend finishing drives before 18:30.
Do I have to pay motorway tolls around Colombo, and how do they work?
Sri Lanka’s expressways (E01, E02, E03) all charge tolls, and using them from Colombo to Kandy or Galle typically costs LKR 600–1,200 for a car. There is no electronic tag like the M6 Toll — you take a paper ticket at the entry booth and pay cash (LKR) or by Visa/Mastercard at the exit plaza. Note that rental companies usually do not include a transponder, and there is no city congestion charge for Colombo, but parking in Fort or Galle Face can run LKR 100–300 per hour.
What does the standard rental insurance cover, and is the excess high?
All reputable suppliers (SIXT, Avis, Europcar, local firms like Malkey) include third-party liability and basic CDW that limits damage liability to an excess of roughly USD 500–1,200 per incident. Windscreen, tyres, roof and underbody are usually excluded from CDW — crucial on Sri Lanka’s potholed rural roads. Pay with a Visa or Mastercard and check whether your card already offers rental collision cover; if not, buying the full “zero excess” waiver for LKR 1,500–2,500/day is sensible given the country’s mixed traffic. Always photograph the car on collection.
What fuel does a hire car take, and are there petrol stations near the airport?
Petrol (petrol 92/95 octane) and diesel are both widely available, and 95-octane petrol is the default for most hire cars. Stations are plentiful inside Colombo and along the A1, but become sparse once you head into the hill country or Yala, so fill up before any long drive. Rental is on a “full-to-full” basis — return the car with the same level to avoid a LKR 2,000–3,000 refuelling surcharge. There is no usable EV charging network for self-drive visitors, so stick with petrol or diesel; cash is fine at most pumps, though cards work at IOC and Laugfs stations.
