UK Traveller Essentials
Cuzco Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Cuzco (Cusco) can be a convenient way to explore the Sacred Valley at your own pace, particularly if you want to stop at viewpoints, markets and smaller towns where tours do not linger. That said, driving in central Cusco can be challenging due to steep streets, tight lanes, one-way routes and limited parking—many travellers collect the car after a night or two in the city and then head out early. For UK licence holders, check your hire agreement carefully for deposit amounts, mileage limits, and which insurances are included (typically collision damage waiver and theft protection with an excess). Ask whether third-party liability/SLI is included, and confirm what counts as ‘damage’ on unpaved roads. Photograph the vehicle on collection and return, understand the fuel policy (full-to-full is usually simplest), and keep some time in hand for vehicle checks. If you plan to drive to high-altitude areas, take it slow, allow extra braking distance, and keep water/snacks handy.

Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ)
The main airport for Cusco and the most common place to collect a hire car. Convenient for same-day onward travel to the Sacred Valley; availability is generally best here. Potential downsides include slightly higher prices, queues at busy arrival times, and immediate exposure to city traffic as you leave the airport area.
Historic Centre (Centro Histórico / Plaza de Armas Area)
Pros: close to hotels, easy to organise if you are spending time in Cusco first, and often competitive pricing compared with the airport. Cons: very limited parking, narrow streets, frequent one-way restrictions and congestion—collection and return can take longer than expected.
Wanchaq District (Around Av. El Sol And Cusco Station Area)
Pros: more main-road access than the old town, easier for meeting a taxi and joining arterial routes; useful if you are staying outside the historic core. Cons: traffic can still be heavy, and parking/kerb space near offices may be limited during business hours.

Cuzco's historic centre is full of narrow, cobbled lanes, one-way streets, and tight corners where a compact car genuinely saves the day. Its small footprint makes nipping into Plaza de Armas car parks far less stressful. Fuel stays cheap, and a light clutch helps you cope with stop-start traffic around San Blas. A sensible choice for a city-based stay.

Driving from Cuzco up to Sacred Valley, Maras, or toward the high passes above 4,000 metres demands real ground clearance and torque. An SUV handles the steep gradients, loose gravel sections, and sudden weather changes that sweep across the highlands. Higher seating improves visibility on blind bends, and automatic transmission takes the strain out of high-altitude driving. A reliable companion for adventure itineraries.

Travelling with family or a small group means luggage, kit, and legroom all matter on multi-hour drives out of Cuzco. A people-carrier keeps everyone together and comfortable at altitude, where fatigue arrives quickly. Boot space swallows day bags, picnic gear, and rain layers for sudden showers. It is the practical pick when comfort beats adventure styling.

Best For Quick Getaways From The Terminal

Airport pick-up suits late arrivals and early departures, with longer opening hours and straightforward access to major routes. It can be faster to collect the car, but prices may be slightly higher and traffic leaving the airport area can be busy at peak times.

Cusco Car Rental FAQs

Essential answers for UK travellers hiring a car in Peru's high-altitude Andean capital

Does my UK photocard driving licence work in Peru, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is technically valid in Peru for up to 180 days as a tourist, but rental firms almost always demand a 1968-convention International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it — without one, you'll be turned away at the desk. Order one from the AA or RAC for £5.50 before you fly; it's valid for one year and arrives in a few days. Carry both documents at all times, as police spot-checks on Andean roads are common and fines for paperwork lapses start at S/330. Note that the UK drives on the left while Peru drives on the right — the switch catches out first-time visitors, so pick up the car from the airport and stick to quiet streets until you've adjusted.
Will the thin air at 3,400m affect my rental car, and is the road to the Sacred Valley safe?
Modern fuel-injected cars cope reasonably well with Cusco's 3,400m altitude, but turbocharged engines feel sluggish and burn a touch more fuel above 3,000m. The paved routes to Pisac (about 1 hour) and Ollantaytambo (1.5–2 hours) are in fair condition, though they twist through hairpin bends with unguarded drops and the occasional landslide between December and March. Allow much more braking distance than you'd use at home, avoid driving after dark outside the city, and descend mountain passes in a low gear to save the brakes. The road to Moray and Maras switches to rough gravel — only attempt it in a proper 4x4 with clearance above 180mm.
What petrol do I need for a Cusco rental car, and where do I fill up?
Peru sells three petrol grades: Regular (84 octane), Premium (90 octane) and Super (95+ octane). Most rental cars run perfectly well on 90-octane Premium, which is widely available at Repsol and Primax stations along Avenida de la Cultura, the airport road and in Pisac. Outlets thin out fast once you head into the Sacred Valley, towards Maras or up to Abra Málaga (4,300m), so fill up in the city and keep at least a quarter tank when heading into remote areas. Cash in soles is accepted everywhere; cards work at larger stations in town. Most rentals follow a 'full-to-full' policy — photograph the gauge on collection and return to avoid a refuelling premium of about US$15.
Can I drive into Cusco's historic centre, and where should I park?
Vehicles are restricted from large parts of Centro Histórico between 6am and 10pm, with retractable bollards and cameras enforcing it — non-resident drivers face fines of roughly S/432 (about £90). The simplest option is to leave the car at a private car park near Plaza de Armas, where overnight rates run S/20–40 and you can walk everywhere within 15 minutes. Outside restricted hours the cobbled streets reopen to traffic, but the one-way system and steep gradients around San Blas are genuinely confusing. Walk the area first if you plan to drive back to a hotel, and never park on yellow-painted kerbs — they're tow zones and recovery fees run S/150+.
I'm 23 and want to rent a 4x4 for the Sacred Valley — will I be hit with a young driver surcharge?
Most major agencies in Cusco set the minimum age at 21 for small cars and 25 for larger 4x4s and SUVs, with a young driver surcharge of US$10–15 per day for under-25s added on top of the rental. Drivers over 70 may also face an extra senior surcharge and are often asked for a recent medical certificate. Fleet size is limited at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ), so if you're close to the cut-off, book 4x4s at least three weeks ahead — the airport branches of Hertz, Budget and Localiza stock them but sell out fast in June–August. A credit card in the driver's name is mandatory; debit cards are usually refused.
Is the basic CDW enough cover, and what's the typical excess on a Cusco rental?
Standard CDW excludes tyres, windscreen, underbody and roof damage — exactly the parts that get hit on Cusco's potholed streets and Sacred Valley gravel tracks, so the excess can easily reach US$1,500–3,000. Take the full 'zero-excess' upgrade or buy a standalone policy before you travel; UK credit-card cover rarely extends to Peru and often excludes driving above 3,000m. Confirm in writing that the policy covers high-altitude and unpaved-road use, or claims will be refused. Third-party liability is included locally but capped low — bump a lorry and you could be liable for tens of thousands. Photograph every panel on collection and return, and keep a note of the agent's name and the 24-hour emergency number.
