Updated Travel-Rental Essentials
Dakar Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Dakar gives you flexibility for the Corniche, Almadies, Lac Rose (Retba), and longer drives towards the Petite Côte. It can be excellent value for groups and for itineraries that go beyond the city centre, but driving conditions can be busy and parking can take patience. For travellers from the United Kingdom, the key is to book with transparent fuel and mileage terms, choose the right insurance cover, and plan pick-up based on your arrival time and first-night location. Practical notes: traffic is often heaviest at commuter times; expect motorbikes and informal lane changes. If you are not comfortable with city driving, consider picking up outside peak hours or using a driver option where available. Always inspect the car carefully, photograph any existing damage, confirm whether a deposit is required (and how it is taken), and ask about tolls, additional driver fees, and cross-border restrictions.

Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) Rental Area
The main airport serving Dakar. Collecting here suits late arrivals and immediate onward travel. Pros: convenience after landing, broader opening hours, and usually better vehicle choice. Cons: possible airport surcharges and a longer drive into central Dakar depending on traffic. Confirm meeting point, after-hours procedures, and whether the car is collected at a desk or via a representative.
Plateau (City Centre) Pick-Up
Best for hotels and offices around Dakar’s administrative and business core. Pros: easy if you’re already staying centrally and want to avoid airport driving. Cons: heavier traffic, limited parking, and stricter timing due to shorter branch hours—confirm exact address and return instructions.
Almadies & Pointe des Almadies
Popular for coastal stays, restaurants, and proximity to many modern accommodations. Pros: generally easier access than the centre and good for heading towards beaches. Cons: availability can be smaller than at the airport and you may need to pre-arrange pick-up times.

Dakar's streets can be tight and busy, with limited secure parking around Plateau and the markets. A small hatchback slips into gaps easily, sips fuel on short hops to Almadies beach and Île de Gorée's ferry, and keeps running costs sensible for British holidaymakers watching the budget.

Trips inland to Lac Rose, Bandia Reserve or Saly often involve rough laterite tracks, deep sand and fierce dry-season heat. A robust SUV with strong air-conditioning, higher ground clearance and tougher tyres handles these conditions confidently and keeps everyone comfortable on long, sun-baked stretches.

Travelling with family or friends to the Petite Côte resorts or Sine-Saloum Delta means luggage, beach gear and kids all competing for space. A roomy van keeps everyone together, swallows coolboxes and surfboards, and the higher seating position gives a reassuring view in heavy coastal traffic.

Dakar Car Hire FAQs

Essential questions for self-driving travellers hiring a car in Dakar, Senegal

Can I drive in Senegal with a UK photocard licence, or is an International Driving Permit required?
Yes, your valid UK photocard licence is accepted in Senegal for stays under three months, though most rental desks also ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP 1949 convention) issued by the AA. Bring your passport, the licence and the IDP together, as a missing IDP is the most common reason a booking gets refused at Blaise Diagne Airport. Drivers must be at least 23, with one year of licence held.
Is driving on the right or left in Senegal, and how bad is traffic around Dakar?
You drive on the right-hand side of the road, with the steering wheel on the left of the car, just like the UK. Inside Dakar the routes are extremely congested from 07:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, and many junctions are informal with no working traffic lights. Outside the capital the N1 and N2 to Saint-Louis and Touba are mostly surfaced dual carriageway, but expect stray animals, sand drifts and overloaded minibuses.
What fuel do Senegalese rental cars use, and are petrol stations easy to find on a road trip?
Diesel (gazole) is by far the most common fuel, though petrol (essence) cars are widely available too. Total, Shell and Elton stations are reliable in Dakar, Saint-Louis, Saly and along the N1, but spacing can be 150 km or more between pumps in the Ferlo region. Most rentals use a full-to-full policy, and you are typically charged around XOF 2,500–3,000 per litre. There are no electric charging networks to speak of.
How do I pay the tolls and Dakar’s city-centre charges when I pick up a rental?
Senegal has no motorway toll booths and no congestion charge in Dakar, so you simply drive straight through. Parking is paid in cash to attendants wearing orange vests, usually XOF 500 to 1,000 per hour in central Plateau and Almadies. Rental companies will pre-authorise around XOF 150,000–250,000 on your Visa or Mastercard as a deposit, so bring a card with that headroom.
What insurance should I insist on for a Senegal road trip, and is the basic CDW enough?
Third-party liability is mandatory and included, but the standard Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) still leaves an excess of roughly XOF 300,000–500,000. Buy the full “tous risques” excess waiver, plus tyre, windscreen and theft cover, as broken windscreens and punctures on bush tracks to Lac Rose or the Sine-Saloum are common. A UK bank card’s travel insurance usually does not extend to Senegal, so a standalone policy is wise.
Can I take a Senegal hire car across the border into The Gambia or Mauritania?
Cross-border driving is technically possible into The Gambia, but most major rental firms (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar) refuse it outright or charge a cross-border fee of XOF 50,000–100,000 plus written authorisation. Crossing into Mauritania or Mali is not permitted. For a Touba pilgrimage or a Niokolo-Koba safari, you can usually self-drive without paperwork, which makes domestic trips far simpler.
