Compare great-value options and use this practical guide for UK travellers to collect smoothly at the airport or in the city, with clear tips on insurance, deposits, fuel and fees.

UK Traveller Essentials
Dammam Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Dammam is one of the easiest ways to move between the city, Khobar, Dhahran and the wider Eastern Province on your own schedule. Roads are generally modern and well signposted, and driving is often the most time-efficient option for business districts and coastal areas where public transport coverage can be limited. For UK travellers, the main practical considerations are having the correct licence documentation, understanding insurance and excess, and being aware of deposits, fuel policies and any additional charges added at the counter.

King Fahd International Airport (DMM) – Car Rental Area
Most visitors choose DMM for the widest choice of suppliers and longer opening hours. Follow airport signage for car rental desks; many companies have counters in the arrivals area with vehicles collected from nearby airport car parks. Pros: strong availability, easier late arrivals, good for one-way trips. Cons: airport surcharges can apply and peak-time queues are possible.
Al Faisaliyah (City Centre) Branches
Convenient for travellers staying in central Dammam or arriving by intercity coach/taxi. Pros: may avoid airport surcharges, easier for local errands and short hires. Cons: shorter opening hours, limited vehicle categories at busy times, and parking/traffic can be more demanding than at the airport.
Corniche / Seafront Area Pick-Up Points
Popular for leisure stays near the waterfront and hotels. Pros: close to accommodation, quick access to coastal roads. Cons: fewer suppliers, limited stock on weekends/holidays, and pick-up/return can be slower due to promenade traffic.

Dammam Car Hire & Driving FAQs

Essential answers for UK travellers on licences, traffic rules, fuel, the Bahrain causeway, and desert driving

Can I drive in Dammam with just my UK photocard licence?
No — UK visitors must carry both their full valid UK driving licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by the AA or RAC before leaving Britain. The IDP is a translation of your licence, not a replacement. Rental companies in Dammam require drivers to be 21+ and to have held the licence for at least one year; under-25s usually pay a young-driver surcharge of SAR 15–30 per day. Without an IDP, any insurance claim can be voided, and you risk a spot fine of SAR 500–900 if stopped on the Eastern Province expressway.
I'm used to driving on the left in the UK — what should I watch out for in Dammam?
Saudi traffic drives on the right in right-hand-drive cars — the mirror image of the UK. The most common mistake for Britons is turning left across oncoming traffic and misjudging motorway slip-roads. Local drivers are assertive: they overtake on both sides and flash headlights to claim priority. Speed cameras from the Saher system operate 24/7 on every main road, and overhead gantries enforce the limits. City roads are 80 km/h, the Dammam–Dhahran expressway 120 km/h. Stick to the slower lanes for the first day or two until confident.
How do I pay the King Fahd Causeway toll when driving to Bahrain?
The 25-km King Fahd Causeway linking Dammam to Manama costs SAR 35 for a small car leaving Saudi Arabia, plus a SAR 25 Saudi exit fee. On the Bahrain side there is a separate toll of BD 2.5 (around SAR 25). You can pay by cash, debit card or via the Tasreeh RFID tag bought at the causeway — regular crossers save 30–40%. Crucially, most rental firms (Hertz, Avis, Sixt) forbid taking their vehicles into Bahrain unless you buy the GCC-crossing endorsement for SAR 100–200 per day; insurance is void otherwise.
What fuel does a Dammam rental take, and how cheap is petrol there?
Petrol is heavily subsidised in Saudi Arabia: 95-octane costs roughly SAR 2.33 a litre and 91-octane about SAR 1.99 (around 50p and 42p). Most rental fleets run on 95, so check the fuel-flap sticker. Stations are plentiful along the Dammam–Al Khobar–Dhahran corridor and on the main inter-city highways, and most are full-service — attendants pump for you, and a SAR 2–5 tip is customary. Diesel is widely available, but never put diesel in a petrol car. Return the car with a full tank to avoid a SAR 30–50 refuelling service fee plus inflated per-litre rates.
Is it safe to drive in Dammam during the summer heat and shamal sandstorms?
Shade temperatures hit 45–50 °C from June to August, and the shamal — a north-westerly wind — can whip up sandstorms that drop visibility below 50 metres within minutes. Avoid driving between 13:00 and 16:00, run the A/C on recirculate, and carry at least four litres of drinking water per person. If a storm hits, pull well off the carriageway, switch off the engine, leave the lights on, and wait it out — never use hazard lights while moving, as it is illegal. Winter (November–February) is far more pleasant at 20–25 °C and virtually rain-free, so winter tyres are unnecessary in Dammam.
