UK Traveller Guide
David, Panama Car Hire Guide: Where to Pick Up and What to Expect
Hiring a car in David is one of the easiest ways to explore Chiriquí at your own pace—ideal for Boquete, Volcán, waterfalls, hot springs and the Pan‑American Highway. For travellers from the United Kingdom, the main advantages are flexibility and often better overall value than day tours, especially if you are travelling as a pair or group. The main trade‑offs are local driving habits, occasional roadworks, and the need to pay close attention to insurance, deposits and fuel policies. In David you will generally choose between airport pick‑up (fastest after landing, best for early/late arrivals) and downtown pick‑up (sometimes cheaper and easier if you are staying centrally).

Enrique Malek International Airport (DAV)
David’s key airport and the most convenient place to collect a car. Arrivals are compact: follow signs for ‘Rent a Car’ near the terminal exit, confirm the vehicle condition and fuel level before leaving, and allow extra time if you are arriving during peak domestic flight banks. Best for UK travellers landing and driving straight to Boquete/Volcán or continuing on the Pan‑American Highway. Potential downsides include slightly higher day rates and limited car choice at very late hours.
Central David (Avenida F Sur / City Centre Offices)
Pros: can be better value than the airport, easier to compare nearby offices, and convenient if you arrive by coach or stay in central hotels first. Cons: you may need a taxi to reach the branch, opening hours can be shorter than the airport, and street parking/one‑way systems can add stress during pick‑up and return.
David Hotel Zone (near major supermarkets and main roads)
Pros: straightforward access to main roads and often easier parking than the tightest city‑centre streets; practical for families collecting luggage from a hotel. Cons: fewer walk‑up options than the centre, and you may have to travel a little to return the car before catching a flight.

David is a compact provincial capital where most streets, shops and car parks suit smaller vehicles. A small hatchback slips easily into tight spots near the cathedral and central market, while keeping running costs refreshingly low. Lighter cars also help you stretch your budget across day trips to nearby coffee farms and hot springs.

David Car Hire FAQs for UK Drivers

Honest answers about licences, road conditions, fuel, tolls and Costa Rica border crossings from David, Panama

Can I drive in David with just my UK photocard licence?
Yes — your UK photocard licence is valid in Panama for tourists for up to 90 days, so legally you do not need an International Driving Permit. In practice, however, most rental desks at Enrique Malek airport ask for an IDP alongside your licence, and a few will refuse the booking without one. Get one from the AA before you leave (about £5.50). Minimum hire age is usually 25, drivers aged 21-24 pay a young-driver surcharge of around USD 10-15 per day, and over-70s may be turned away.
How bad are the roads from David, and is it safe to drive up to Boquete?
The Interamericana (Pan-American Highway) through David is a well-maintained dual carriageway — the easiest way out of town. The 50 km climb up to Boquete on Ruta 10 is fully tarmacked but steep, narrow and very bendy, with blind crests and the occasional landslide in rainy season (May-November). Allow 1-1.5 hours, drive in daylight only, and never overtake the slow lorries. Secondary roads to beaches such as Las Lajas or into the Chiriquí highlands are often unpaved, potholed and muddy after heavy rain, so rent a small SUV with decent ground clearance if you plan to leave the main axes.
What fuel should I use and can I pay by card at the pump?
Panama uses the US dollar and sells unleaded 91 (regular) and 95 (Euro premium); diesel is widely available too. Most stations in and around David accept Visa and Mastercard, but smaller rural pumps often take cash only, so carry small USD notes. All major rental firms operate a full-to-full policy — pick the car up full and return it full to avoid a refuelling charge of USD 8-12 on top of the cost of the missing fuel. Always keep the last receipt as proof in case of a dispute at the desk, and avoid the airport garage as prices are noticeably higher than in town.
Are there tolls on the way out of David, and how do I pay them?
There are no tolls inside David itself, but you will hit two or three cash toll booths (peajes) if you drive the Interamericana towards Panama City or towards the Costa Rica border at Paso Canoas. Each one costs roughly USD 1-3, payable in cash USD only — cards and coins are usually not accepted, so keep small bills to hand. There is no electronic tag system and no congestion charge. Factor in about USD 6-8 of tolls for a one-way trip to the capital, and a similar amount heading west to the frontier.
Can I take the rental car across the border into Costa Rica?
Yes, but only with prior written permission from the rental company and almost always at a surcharge of USD 50-150 per rental, plus you must buy Costa Rican mandatory third-party liability cover (about USD 25-40) at the border — your Panamanian policy does not protect you in Costa Rica. The Paso Canoas crossing, roughly one hour west of David, is open 06:00-22:00; expect queues of 30-60 minutes at weekends. Keep your passport, vehicle registration and insurance card on the dashboard, and on the Costa Rican side watch for badly signed one-way streets in towns and aggressive overtaking on the Interamericana.
