What do you need to rent a car in Doha?
Renting a car in Doha is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.
- Form of ID: A valid physical national photo ID (e.g., Ukraine or Qatar) in original form is required.
- Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical local driving license with no major endorsements. In most cases, the license must have been held for at least 1 year; some offers require 2 years.
Notes: Non-GCC citizens are allowed to rent a vehicle for a maximum of 7 days using a GCC-issued driver's license.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Accepted credit cards commonly include Visa and MasterCard, and in many offers also AMEX and sometimes DinersClub. Some offers additionally accept deposit (debit) cards such as Visa and MasterCard debit for deposit purposes. E‑vouchers or printed vouchers are accepted where specified.
- Age requirements: Typical eligible driving age ranges from 18–100, depending on the offer. Most common bands include 21–80, 21–70, 22–75, 23–75, 25–80 and 18–80/100. Young driver surcharges may apply: for example, ages 21–25 may incur about $30.00 per day (tax included) under some offers; ages 18–22 may be charged about $5.00 per day, sometimes capped at $50.00 per rental; another offer charges younger drivers 21–24 an effective fee of about $27.06 per lease. In several policies, young and senior driver fees are marked as “To be confirmed,” meaning the exact fee must be checked at the time of booking or at the counter.

Popular Driving Routes And Trips From Doha, Qatar
Scenic Route Options:
Popular Day Trips From Doha:
Doha To Al Khor And Purple Island (Al Thakira Mangroves)
Head north to Al Khor for a quieter coastal vibe, then explore mangroves near Purple Island—excellent for nature walks, birdwatching, and calm-water kayaking in cooler months.
Doha To Al Zubarah Fort And Northern Coast
A history-focused trip to Qatar’s UNESCO-listed archaeological area, anchored by Al Zubarah Fort. Pair it with a relaxed drive along the northern coastline for a full-day outing.
Doha To Dukhan And West Coast Beaches
Drive west to Dukhan for sea views and a different side of the peninsula. It’s a solid beach-and-sunset day with fewer crowds than central Doha areas.
Doha Desert Safari Drive To Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea) Area
A bucket-list outing toward the Inland Sea region, known for towering dunes and wide desert horizons. For dune driving, go with an experienced guide/convoy and the right vehicle setup; otherwise drive to designated staging areas and join a tour.
Car Rental Planning Tips For Doha
Bring The Right Documents: Carry your passport and a valid driver’s license. Many travelers also bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) to simplify pickup, especially if the license is not in English.
Choose The Right Vehicle For The Route: A compact car is perfect for Doha city routes. For Zekreet backroads or Inland Sea dune areas, consider a higher-clearance SUV and avoid soft sand unless properly equipped.
Plan Fuel Stops Before Remote Drives: Fuel is easy in Doha and on major highways, but options thin out on remote west/north routes. Top up before heading to Zekreet, Dukhan, or the Inland Sea staging areas.
Use Offline Maps And Pin Key Locations: Mobile coverage is generally strong, but it helps to download offline maps and save pins for your destination, parking areas, and a backup fuel station.
Time Your Drive For Heat And Visibility: In warmer months, schedule long outdoor stops early morning or near sunset. Night driving is fine on main roads, but be cautious on unlit desert roads.
Understand Insurance And Deposits: Confirm what’s covered (CDW, theft, glass/tires) and the security deposit amount before pickup. Take photos/videos of the car at pickup and drop-off.
Know Where To Park In Doha: Popular areas like Souq Waqif, Corniche, Katara, and The Pearl can get busy. Use designated garages/lots and allow extra time on weekends and event nights.
Respect Speed Limits And Cameras: Qatar has extensive speed enforcement. Watch posted limits (which can change by zone) and keep a buffer for traffic flow on expressways.
