Car Hire Guide For Duluth, United States
Hiring a car in Duluth is one of the easiest ways to explore the North Shore of Lake Superior, nearby state parks and scenic routes where public transport can be limited. For travellers from the United Kingdom, expect right-hand traffic, automatic gearboxes as the norm and strict winter driving considerations for much of the year. Prices are often competitive when booked in advance, and you will typically find the widest choice at the airport or along the main commercial corridors in and around downtown. Always review what is included (taxes, additional driver, young driver fees) and take photos of the vehicle at collection and return.

Duluth International Airport (DLH) – Rental Car Area
Best for maximum choice and late arrivals. Car hire desks are located in/near the terminal, with vehicles collected from the designated car hire area. Allow extra time in winter for de-icing and for checking tyres and wiper blades before departure. Pros: longest opening hours, simplest for luggage, good availability. Cons: airport concession fees and taxes can make it pricier than off-airport locations.
Downtown Duluth (Canal Park & Waterfront Area)
Convenient if you are staying near hotels, the waterfront or attractions. Pros: walkable pickup from central accommodation, can be cheaper than airport rates, easier to avoid airport crowds. Cons: limited fleet size, shorter opening hours, parking can be tight during peak weekends and events.
Central Duluth (Near I-35 / Mesaba Avenue Corridor)
A practical option for quick access to I-35 and major roads heading to the North Shore. Pros: easier vehicle collection and exit to main routes, sometimes better availability than the waterfront. Cons: less convenient without a taxi/ride-hail from your hotel, some branches close earlier on Sundays.

British visitors to Duluth should be ready for harsh Minnesota winters with sub-zero temperatures, lake-effect snow and icy roads. A mid-size SUV with all-wheel drive and decent ground clearance handles snow-packed streets, the hilly Skyline Parkway and unplowed rural lanes with reassuring stability. Heated seats and a robust heater make frosty mornings far more bearable.

The North Shore Scenic Byway along Lake Superior is widely regarded as one of America's most beautiful drives, especially in late summer and early autumn. A convertible lets you soak up the crisp air, panoramic lake vistas and fiery maple colours between Duluth, Split Rock and Gooseberry Falls. Boot space is modest, so travel light.

Duluth Car Hire FAQ for UK Travellers

Practical answers for British drivers hiring a car on Minnesota's North Shore, all year round.

Will my UK photocard licence work in Duluth, or do I need an International Driving Permit first?
Your UK photocard licence is technically recognised in Minnesota, yet the rental desks at Duluth International Airport (DLH) almost always ask for a 1949 or 1968 International Driving Permit. Order one from the AA or RAC for £5.50 before you fly – it arrives in a few working days. Take both documents: Hertz, Enterprise and Avis have refused bookings on the spot when the IDP was missing. Minimum rental age is 21, the licence must be at least 12 months old, and the agent will not release the keys without a return airline ticket or proof of onward travel.
Will I get stranded in snow around Lake Superior between November and April?
Probably not, provided you book an AWD or 4×4 SUV and add winter or all-season tyres at the counter. Duluth receives around 2 metres of snow a season and Highway 61 (the North Shore) regularly turns to black ice between Gooseberry Falls and Grand Marais. Avoid driving after dusk, keep at least 100 m behind gritting lorries, and pack a heavy coat, blanket, shovel and a charged phone in case of a multi-hour road closure. Studded tyres are legal in Minnesota from October to April, and January temperatures regularly drop below -25 °C.
How do I cope with driving on the right-hand side of the road for the first time?
Take it easy at first – the I-35 spiral ramp into downtown Duluth is confusing even for Americans, so stick to side streets on day one. Speed limits are in mph: 30 mph in town, 65 mph on the motorway, 55 mph on rural Highway 61. At a roundabout, traffic already on the circle has priority (the opposite of the UK rule), and you may turn right on a red light after a full stop unless a sign forbids it. Practise in a quiet supermarket car park before setting off, and remember the driver sits on the left, so overtaking and motorway merges feel reversed.
Are there toll roads around Duluth, and how do I pay them?
Almost none. Duluth itself has no toll booths, but the I-35 MnPASS express lane through the downtown corridor costs $1.50–$4.50 between 06:00 and 19:00 on weekdays. The MnPASS transponder can be hired from E-ZPass Inc. for about $1.50 per day. Most visitors simply avoid the express lane and use the free general lanes. If you do enter by mistake, the rental firm will charge the unpaid toll plus a $15 admin fee within a few weeks of return, so check the road signs carefully when joining the motorway.
I am 23 – how much extra will I pay to hire a car in Duluth?
Drivers under 25 pay a "young renter" surcharge of $20–$30 per day at Duluth Airport, on top of the base rental. Anyone under 20 is normally refused outright. A few firms (Sixt, sometimes Avis) cap the daily fee, so check the booking screen before confirming. The surcharge disappears on your 25th birthday. Bear in mind that full-size SUVs, premium saloons and convertibles are blocked for under-25s, so book an intermediate or standard saloon instead. Certain UK credit cards such as some Amex or Chase products waive the young driver fee on US rentals.
Is the basic CDW enough, or should I take extra cover?
The standard US rental quote already includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and third-party liability up to Minnesota's minimum of $30,000. That still leaves you liable for the first $500–$1,000 of any damage and excludes tyres, windscreen, roof and underbody – all of which suffer badly on the winter-gritted North Shore roads. Either pay the supplier's "full coverage" upgrade at the desk (about £8–£12 a day) or buy a cheaper UK annual policy from iCar or Questor before you fly, then decline the desk offer and save up to £200 on a two-week hire.
