UK Traveller Essentials
Durban Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Durban is one of the easiest ways to explore KwaZulu-Natal beyond the beachfront—think Umhlanga, uShaka Marine World, the Valley of a Thousand Hills, game reserves, and the North and South Coast. Public transport options can be limited for day trips, so a rental car adds flexibility and can work out cost-effective for couples and families. UK drivers should factor in left-hand traffic (same as the UK), local road rules, and rental essentials such as deposits, fuel policy, and excess. For peace of mind, consider excess-reduction cover, confirm whether tyre and windscreen cover is included, and check if your card will be charged in ZAR with any bank FX fees. It’s also wise to ask about toll roads, after-hours returns, and whether cross-border travel (e.g., to Lesotho, Eswatini, or Mozambique) is allowed, as permissions and fees vary by company.

King Shaka International Airport (DUR) Car Rental Centre
Durban’s main airport for international and domestic arrivals. Car hire desks are located in the terminal area with vehicles collected from the dedicated rental parking bays. Follow signs for “Car Rental” after baggage reclaim. Pros: widest vehicle choice, longer hours, convenient for road trips. Cons: can be busier at peak times, and rates may include airport surcharges.
Durban City Centre (CBD) Branches
Pros: practical if you’re staying centrally and don’t need a car immediately; can be cheaper than airport pickup; easier drop-off if your accommodation is in town. Cons: traffic and parking can be challenging; shorter opening hours; limited vehicle availability, especially automatics in high season.
Umhlanga Ridge & La Lucia (North Durban)
Pros: close to popular hotels, shopping areas, and business parks; convenient access to the N2/M4; generally a calmer pickup experience than the CBD. Cons: not walkable from all beachfront properties; fewer late-night options; may require a taxi/ride-hail to collect the car.

Durban Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Essential licence, toll, age, safety and fuel questions answered for self-drive holidays in KwaZulu-Natal

Can I use my UK driving licence in Durban, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your UK photocard licence is valid in South Africa, but you must also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). Order it from the AA or RAC before flying out — it costs about £5.50 and is issued on the spot. Rental desks at King Shaka International Airport will refuse the keys without both documents. Your UK licence covers stays of up to 12 months.
Do I drive on the left in Durban? I'm used to the UK but is it the same?
Yes — South Africa drives on the left with right-hand-drive cars, just like home. Roundabouts and motorway merges will feel familiar. Watch out for poorly painted road markings in township areas and on rural N2 stretches north of Durban, where lane discipline can be lax. Stick to the N3 towards Johannesburg and the N2 coast road for the best-maintained surfaces.
How do I pay tolls around Durban? Will the car come with an e-tag?
Good news: the N2 and N3 around Durban have no e-toll gantries at present, so you can drive toll-free in KwaZulu-Natal. Tolls only kick in if you continue north into Gauteng (Johannesburg/Pretoria), where e-toll fees run at roughly R1.76/km. If you do head that way, buy a day pass on the SANRAL website or rent an e-tag from your supplier for around R100.
I'm 23 — can I rent in Durban, and what is the 'young driver' charge?
Yes, drivers aged 21-24 are accepted by Avis, Budget, Hertz and Europcar, but you'll pay a young-driver surcharge of ZAR 350-500 (£15-22) per day on top of the base rate. Under-21s are normally refused outright. The upper age limit is typically 75; drivers over 70 may be asked for a medical letter. There is usually no upper-age surcharge.
Is driving around Durban safe, and what about carjackings?
The beachfront, uMhlanga Ridge and the airport corridor are safe in daylight. Avoid central Durban and the N2 near townships after dark — if you are 'bumped', do not stop; drive straight to a police station. Keep windows up, doors locked and bags out of sight in city traffic. Pay the extra R30-50/day for an armed-response tracker — it reduces theft risk noticeably.
How much will the rental firm pre-authorise on my card, and what petrol should I use?
Expect a hold of ZAR 4,000-8,000 (£170-340) on top of the rental to cover the damage excess, fuel and any tolls. South African pumps offer 95-octane unleaded petrol and 50ppm diesel — both easy to find at Engen, Shell and BP stations. Return the car full-to-full; otherwise the refuelling surcharge is typically 2-3 times the pump price, plus an admin fee.
