UK Traveller Guide
Exeter Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Hiring a car in Exeter is a convenient way to explore Devon’s countryside and coastline, where public transport can be slower and less frequent outside the city. Driving is straightforward for UK residents (left-hand traffic and familiar road signs), and you can reach popular spots such as Dartmoor, the Jurassic Coast and North Devon with far more flexibility. Parking in central Exeter can be limited and pricier at peak times, so choosing the right pick-up location—and understanding fuel, deposits and insurance—can make a noticeable difference to cost and comfort.

Exeter Airport (EXT) – Car Rental Desks And Pick-up
Best for arriving by air and leaving the city quickly. Car hire suppliers typically operate from the terminal area with vehicles collected from nearby car parks. Advantages: longer opening hours, easy access to the M5/A30 for onward travel, and good choice of vehicles in busy seasons. Disadvantages: airport surcharges may apply, queues can form at peak flight times, and add-ons (extra driver, excess reduction) can be pricier than in-town.
Exeter City Centre (High Street/Princesshay Area)
Convenient if you are already staying centrally or arriving by train/coach. Pros: you can avoid paying for a car on days you will walk around Exeter, and in-town rates can sometimes be sharper than airport pricing. Cons: traffic can be slower at rush hour, parking/collection access may be tighter, and opening hours may be shorter than at the airport.
Exeter St David’s Station Area
A practical choice for rail arrivals from elsewhere in the UK. Pros: easy onward routing to the A377/A30 and good for one-way itineraries across Devon and Cornwall. Cons: limited vehicle availability compared with the airport in peak periods, and you may need to plan collection around train times and branch opening hours.

Hire a Car in Exeter: Three Top Picks for Devon Roads

Nimble on Narrow Devon Lanes

Auto

Devon's country roads between Exeter and the coast are famously narrow and hedge-lined, with limited passing places. A medium hatchback strikes the ideal balance, offering enough room for luggage yet a tidy wheelbase for tight bends. Visibility is good, fuel economy sensible, and parking in Exeter's old quarter is far less stressful than in something larger. Comfortable for couples or small families exploring Topsham, Sidmouth or the Exe Estuary trail.

Moorland

Auto

Dartmoor's twisting, steep and often fog-shrouded roads demand a vehicle with higher ground clearance and steady handling. An SUV copes well with uneven surfaces, cattle grids and sudden weather shifts that are common on the moors. Four-wheel-drive versions add reassurance for forays to remote tors or the North Hessary Tor area. Boot space is generous for walking gear, picnic hampers and a wet-weather layer after a blustery hike.

On calmer summer days, the South Devon coast road from Exmouth down to Salcombe is one of England's finest scenic drives. A convertible makes the most of those rare warm afternoons and golden evening light over the cliffs. Roof down at Beer, Branscombe or Hope Cove, the experience is genuinely memorable. For UK weather, choose one with a heated cabin and quick electric roof, as showers can arrive without warning along the English Riviera.

Fast Getaway For Devon Road Trips

Airport pick-up suits travellers who want to land and drive immediately, with strong availability at weekends and during school holidays. It is typically the simplest option for early departures/late arrivals and for heading straight to the M5/A30, though airport location fees and higher-priced add-ons can increase the total.

Exeter Car Hire FAQs

Driving rules, parking, tolls, country lanes and electric motoring explained for visitors hiring a car in Exeter

Roundabouts everywhere in Exeter — who actually has priority?
Traffic already on the roundabout has priority over traffic joining — you give way to the right. The rule applies everywhere, from the huge M5/A30 junction (J30) on Exeter's eastern edge to the small mini-roundabouts in Heavitree and St Thomas. Indicate left as you pass the exit before yours, indicate right if you're going more than halfway round, and never stop on the roundabout itself. Exiting without indicating is a frequent cause of local driving test fails — and a common cause of flashed headlights from impatient Devon drivers.
Are Devon's country lanes as terrifyingly narrow as they look in photos?
Yes — many single-track lanes are barely wider than one car, with high hedgerows and blind summits. Even where the national 60 mph limit applies, drive at 30-40 mph or less. Use the passing places (small lay-bys marked by white posts) to let oncoming traffic through, and never try to squeeze past. Cattle grids, tractors, cyclists and the occasional wandering sheep are routine. Allow plenty of extra time: a 20-mile trip across Dartmoor can easily take an hour.
Where can I park in Exeter city centre without spending a fortune?
Use the Park & Ride — sites at Honiton Road, Sowton and Marsh Barton cost £2.00-3.20 for the day, with a free bus into the centre. Central car parks (Guildhall, Harlequins, Princesshay) charge £1.80-2.50 per hour. Most on-street parking is residents-only or short-stay, capped at one to two hours. After 6pm and on Sundays, on-street bays are usually free. The Park Exeter app shows live space availability and accepts contactless payment at every council car park — handy because central car parks often fill up by 10am on Saturdays.
Are there any toll roads near Exeter, and what about the Dartford Crossing?
Devon has no toll roads, and the Severn crossings (M4/M48) have been free in both directions since December 2018. If you drive to or from London, however, you'll use the Dartford Crossing on the M25, which costs £2.50 per car. Pay online by midnight the following day via the official gov.uk Dart Charge site, or you receive an automatic £70 penalty notice. Exeter itself has no Clean Air Zone or Low Emission Zone — those are London and Birmingham only. Bridges within Devon, like the one at Exeter Quay, are public and free to cross.
What speed limits apply on the M5 and Devon's rural A-roads?
Standard English limits: 30 mph in built-up areas with street lighting, 60 mph on single-carriageway A-roads (most of Devon's rural network) and 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways, including the M5 around Exeter. Local councils impose 20 mph zones near schools and in many residential streets. Average-speed cameras are common on the A30 and A38 into the city. Exceed a 30 mph limit by enough to trigger a summons and you'll receive a £100 fine plus three licence points at minimum.
Can I hire an electric car in Exeter, and is Devon ready for EVs?
Most major rental firms at Exeter Airport (Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz) now offer Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 and similar EVs. Public charging is solid in the city: a Tesla Supercharger at Exeter Services (M5 J30), plus Pod Point, Osprey and GeniePoint units at most central car parks and supermarkets. Out in rural Devon, however, gaps appear — don't rely on the app alone when heading into Dartmoor or North Devon. Rapid chargers cost roughly 60-80p per kWh, so a full top-up is around £25-35 for a typical EV.
