Compare airport and city pick-up options, understand insurance and fuel policies, and plan stress-free driving beyond Florence—ideal for Tuscany day trips and longer Italian road journeys.

UK Traveller Focus
Florence Car Hire Guide for Travellers from the United Kingdom
Hiring a car in Florence is most convenient if you plan to explore Tuscany (for example, Chianti, Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca and the Val d’Orcia) where public transport can be slower and less direct. It is less practical for driving within central Florence itself due to limited traffic zones (ZTL), narrow streets, scarce parking and higher city-centre driving stress. For most UK travellers, a smart approach is to pick up at Florence Airport or near the main stations, leave the city promptly, and return the car at the end of your trip—especially if your itinerary includes rural areas, wineries, hill towns, or multiple stops. Remember: you will drive on the right in Italy; many rentals are manual; and ZTL fines are common if you enter restricted areas unintentionally.

Florence Airport (FLR) – Amerigo Vespucci (Peretola)
Florence’s primary airport for car hire. Typically the easiest place to collect a vehicle, with longer opening hours and a wider choice of cars (including automatics if booked early). Best for leaving Florence quickly and heading into Tuscany without navigating the historic centre. Consider potential queues at busy arrival times and verify where the car park/shuttle pick-up point is for your provider.
Santa Maria Novella (SMN) / Firenze Centrale Area
Pros: convenient if you arrive by train and want to collect a car after a short stay; often walkable from hotels near the station; good choice of suppliers. Cons: traffic can be hectic; parking is limited; routes may skirt ZTL boundaries; pick-up/return can take longer at peak times.
Piazzale Michelangelo / Viale Galileo (South of the Centre)
Pros: a practical edge-of-centre area to avoid the tightest historic streets while still being accessible; can be easier to drive out towards Chianti and the A1/A11 connections. Cons: fewer rental counters than the station/airport; parking and one-way systems can still be confusing; check exact access route to avoid ZTL.

It can also reduce the risk of accidental ZTL entry. Book early for automatics and family-sized cars, and allow extra time for queues during peak flights.

Florence Car Hire FAQs for UK Drivers

Practical answers on licences, ZTL fines, tolls and snow chains for British visitors driving in Tuscany

My UK photocard licence — do I still need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Florence after Brexit?
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, UK travellers must carry a 1968-format IDP alongside their UK photocard to drive in Italy. Hire desks at Florence Airport (Peretola) and Santa Maria Novella station ask to see both at the counter, and missing the IDP can void your insurance cover entirely. Buy it from the AA or RAC for £5.50 before you fly — Italian police can fine you €422 on the spot if you cannot produce it. Your passport is not a substitute, and a phone photo of the IDP will not be accepted.
What is a ZTL — and why do Florence hire cars routinely pick up €100+ fines without warning?
ZTL stands for Zona a Traffico Limitato, a camera-enforced restricted zone covering almost the entire historic centre. Number-plate cameras photograph every car that enters between 07:30–19:30 Monday to Friday and 07:30–17:00 Saturday; the fine is posted to the registered keeper weeks later, then billed by your rental company with a €30–€50 admin fee on top. There is no way to pay on entry. If your hotel lies inside the ZTL, ask reception to email your plate to the Comune's whitelist at least 24–48 hours before you arrive.
How do I pay Florence–Pisa or Florence–Bologna motorway tolls — and is the Telepass device worth €7 a day?
Italian autostradas are mostly barrier-controlled: take a ticket on the entry ramp, then pay cash or card at the exit booth, or use the yellow 'Telepass' lane if fitted. Cars from Hertz, Sixt and Avis at Peretola usually come with Telepass pre-installed; Sicily by Car and Locauto often do not. A quick Florence–Pisa run is about €3.50 one-way, Florence–Bologna roughly €8.20, and Florence–Rome around €22. Pay-as-you-go cash or card is cheaper than the €7/day Telepass fee unless you clock up more than 200 km a day.
Where can I actually park a hire car near the Duomo without getting clamped or fined?
Avoid the historic core entirely. Use the underground Parcheggio Sant'Ambrogio (€2.50/hour, €20/day), Parterre near Piazza della Libertà (€1.80/hour), or the Amerigo Vespucci airport car park at €15/day with a shuttle bus. Blue-stripe bays cost €1–€2/hour, payable at the meter or via the MyCicero app; white stripes are residents-only and tickets are issued immediately. Hotel valet parking in the centre typically runs €25–€40 per night, which is almost always cheaper than risking a ZTL entry.
I'm 23 — how much extra will a Florence rental firm actually charge me for being young?
Most Italian suppliers set the minimum hire age at 21, with a 'young driver' surcharge of roughly €15–€25 per day for under-25s added to the base rate. Drivers over 70 face a smaller €8–€10/day senior surcharge. Maggiore and Locauto cap the total young-driver fee at around €150, so a full week stays manageable, while Hertz and Sixt can stack it daily. Book online with a UK credit card from a major brand to dodge the €300–€500 cash deposit that walk-in customers are often asked for.
Will I need snow chains if I drive from Florence into Chianti or up to San Gimignano in January?
Almost certainly yes. From 15 November to 15 April the SS222 Chiantigiana through Greve in Chianti, the SR429 between Empoli and Siena, and many hill-town lanes require M+S-rated winter tyres or fitted chains in the boot. Police spot-checks are routine on the A1 Firenze Sud–Valdichiana stretch and the SP101 around San Casciano. Chains cost €40–€60 from any Decathlon or Autogrill on the autostrada; rental companies rarely include them, so factor that into your budget. Without them, a €87 fine and roadside refusal are likely.
