Rent A Car In Graz, Austria With Competitive Prices And Local Know-How

Find great-value car hire from Graz Airport (GRZ) or the city centre, with a practical UK-focused guide to insurance, fuel policies, tolls and easy pick-up locations.

UK Traveller Essentials
Graz Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Graz is a convenient way to explore Styria beyond the tram network, from wine routes and spa towns to alpine day trips. Graz itself is walkable and well served by public transport, so a car is most valuable if you plan to leave the city, travel with luggage, or want flexibility outside timetables. For travellers from the United Kingdom, expect right-hand driving, common use of manual gearboxes, and motorway rules that may differ from home (notably toll vignettes on motorways and some expressways). Booking ahead often brings better choice (automatic cars can be limited), clearer pricing, and simpler pick-up at the airport or major city locations.

Graz Airport (GRZ) Car Rental Centre
Best for quick arrivals and straightforward onward travel. Car hire desks are typically located inside the terminal building; follow signs for “Car Rental/Mietwagen” after arrivals. Pick-up is usually from a nearby airport car park with clearly marked bays.
Graz Hauptbahnhof (Main Railway Station) Area
Pros: convenient if you arrive by train from Vienna or Salzburg; good public transport links for returning the car without entering the historic centre. Cons: traffic can be busy at peak times; parking and loading space may be limited depending on the branch.
Jakominiplatz / Inner City Fringe
Pros: central access near key tram routes and hotels; ideal for collecting a car after a few days in the city. Cons: tighter streets, one-way systems and limited short-stay parking can make pick-up and drop-off more stressful.

Best Car Hire Picks for Graz & Styria

Three trusted vehicle choices for British drivers exploring Graz's old-town lanes, the Styrian Alps and the rolling wine country beyond the city.

A supermini suits Graz's medieval Altstadt perfectly, where narrow cobbled lanes, pedestrian-only streets and scarce parking make larger cars a struggle. It glides easily between Schlossberg, Murinsel and Eggenberg Palace, sips fuel on short hops, and an automatic gearbox eases the stress of driving on the right. British visitors will appreciate the easy manoeuvring.

Styria's alpine playground — Schladming, the Dachstein glacier and the Sölk and Turrach passes — needs grip, higher ground clearance and four-wheel-drive confidence. A compact SUV handles winter snow, steep toll roads and twisting country lanes with reassuring stability. An automatic gearbox is invaluable on icy gradients, especially for British drivers unfamiliar with right-hand traffic.

Wine Country

Sunny, Scenic & Stylish

The Südsteirische Weinstraße and eastern Styrian hills shine from late spring through harvest, with rolling vineyards, pumpkin-fields and Buschenschank taverns begging for top-down driving. A compact convertible suits the warm-weather touring pace, makes short work of winding back-road stop-offs at family wineries, and turns any country day trip into a memorable road trip.

Why Pick Up At Graz Airport (GRZ)

Airport pick-up suits UK travellers landing with luggage or planning immediate trips into Styria. You typically get longer opening hours, a wider vehicle selection, and faster access to main roads. It can also reduce the need for taxis or trams, and one-way rentals to other Austrian cities may be easier to arrange from the airport.

Graz Car Hire FAQs

Motorway tolls, UK licences, winter tyres, parking fees and young-driver surcharges explained for travellers driving in Styria

Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Graz with my UK photocard licence?
Yes. Since Brexit, your UK photocard licence is technically accepted in Austria for stays up to 6 months, but the big rental firms at Graz Airport (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis) all list a 1968-vintage International Driving Permit as a mandatory pick-up document alongside your UK licence. Buy it before you fly from the AA or RAC – cost is about £5.50 and it is valid for 12 months. You'll also need it if you plan to drive into Slovenia, Italy or Hungary. Skipping it usually means a refused handover, and any damage would not be covered by the rental insurance.
Do I need a motorway vignette when leaving Graz, and how much does it cost?
Austria requires a Vignette toll sticker on every motorway and most expressways, including the A2 from Graz towards Vienna and the A9 up towards the Tauern tunnel. A 10-day digital sticker for 2025 costs €9.90; a 2-month version is €29.00. You can buy one online at asfinag.at (linked to your number plate), at any petrol station, or at the ÖAMTC office just off the airport. Most rental cars come with the vignette already registered – check the windscreen or ask at the desk. Driving without one risks a €110–800 on-the-spot fine, plus an admin charge from the rental firm.
Will I need winter tyres or snow chains around Graz between November and April?
Between 1 November and 15 April, every car on Austrian roads must carry winter tyres (M+S marking, minimum 3 mm tread) whenever wintry conditions are possible. In Styria that realistically means most weeks from December to February, plus many higher passes year-round. Snow chains (€25–40 from ÖAMTC, petrol stations or any hardware store) are legally required when you see a chain-on-tyres sign, especially on the Wechsel, Pack and Semmering passes south of Graz. All major rental companies include winter tyres at no extra cost when you book a car in this period – confirm when collecting.
How does on-street parking work in Graz city centre, and what are the fines?
Almost the entire Old Town and inner Graz is a Kurzparkzone (short-stay zone) Monday–Friday 09:00–20:00 and Saturday 09:00–13:00, with a 3-hour maximum. Buy a Parkschein from the blue ticket machines (€1.10–2.20 per hour, coins or card) or use the Handy Parken apps (Halt!, Park & Joy). Underground car parks at Andreas-Hofer-Platz, Kastner & Öhler or the Murpark centre are €2.00–3.40 per hour and far easier. Grazer city wardens are very active – a parking ticket is €30, and clamping or towing can run to €200.
I'm 23 – will I be hit with a young-driver fee when renting in Graz?
Almost certainly, yes. The standard minimum rental age in Austria is 21, but drivers under 25 typically pay a 'Jungfahrer' surcharge of €8–15 per day with the big firms (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz), usually capped at around €150 per rental. Budget suppliers such as Buchbinder or Megadrive charge closer to €5 per day. The fee cannot be waived and is collected at the desk, not online, so budget an extra €80–120 for a week-long hire. Drivers over 70 may also face a small 'senior driver' check fee of €3–5 per day with some companies.
Can I take a hire car from Graz into Slovenia or Hungary without extra paperwork?
Yes, but you must declare it at the desk. Sixt, Europcar and Hertz all permit cross-border trips from Graz into Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Italy and Germany for a one-off Cross-Border Fee of €10–25 per rental, in exchange for a Green Card insurance document. Trips to non-EU states such as Serbia, Bosnia or Romania are usually refused outright. If you're heading down to the Slovenian coast, remember that Slovenia also requires its own e-vignette – about €16 for 7 days – on top of the Austrian one. Book the cross-border option online to save roughly €5.
