Guernsey Car Hire Guide: Where to Pick Up and What to Know
Hiring a car in Guernsey is a convenient way to explore beaches, cliff walks and rural lanes at your own pace, especially if you are staying outside St Peter Port or want to see more than one parish in a day. Driving is on the left (familiar for UK visitors), but roads can be narrow with tight passing places and lower speeds, so a small car is often the most comfortable choice. Most rentals are manual, automatics can be limited, and peak-season availability may be tight—booking ahead is wise. Pay close attention to fuel policy, deposits, and insurance excess: UK credit cards are typically accepted, but some providers require the lead driver to present the card used for payment at pick-up.

Guernsey Airport (GCI) Car Hire Area
The main arrival point for flights and the most straightforward place to collect a car. After landing, follow signs for car hire; pick-up is designed for quick onward travel to St Peter Port and the rest of the island. Pros: fastest exit after a flight, good for early/late arrivals, usually the widest choice of vehicles. Cons: airport-location surcharges may apply, queues can form at peak times, and you may need to manage luggage while completing paperwork.
St Peter Port (Town Centre) Pick-Up
Ideal if you arrive by ferry or plan to spend time in town before collecting a vehicle. Pros: convenient for harbour-side accommodation, often easier to reach on foot, and can avoid airport surcharges. Cons: town traffic and limited parking can make collection/return slower, and opening hours may be shorter than airport locations.
St Peter Port Harbour / Ferry Terminal Area
A practical option for travellers arriving from the UK via ferry, or for day-one plans centred around the waterfront. Pros: minimal transfer after disembarking, useful if your accommodation is nearby, and good for quick handover. Cons: availability can be limited, you may face busy pedestrian/vehicle areas at peak sailings, and returning during ferry rush periods can add time.

Guernsey's country lanes wind tight and narrow, and parking in St. Peter Port is famously snug. A small hatchback slips through stone-walled lanes with ease and fits tight harbour-side bays. Short distances between villages mean a compact car saves fuel and keeps costs low. UK visitors will feel right at home.

Guernsey's cliff-top routes deliver sweeping Channel views on sunny days. Dropping the roof turns a drive along the south coast or out to Pleinmont into a proper open-air experience. A small convertible handles the island's tight bends gracefully and parks easily in busy bays. Mind the breeze off the sea.

Guernsey's exposed coastal roads can feel every gust, and rural lanes sometimes turn muddy after heavy rain. A small SUV gives you a slightly higher driving position and extra grip. It is also the practical pick for families carrying beach gear and walking kit. Take care through the tightest town-centre lanes.

Why Pick Up at Guernsey Airport (GCI)

Airport pick-up is the most seamless option if you are flying in: you can collect your car soon after landing, with good availability and straightforward onward routes. It is particularly useful for early starts, late arrivals, and travellers carrying luggage. Do compare total costs, as airport locations sometimes include extra charges.

Guernsey Car Hire & Driving FAQs

Essential questions on UK licences, narrow lanes, parking, fuel and insurance for self-driving holidays in the Channel Islands

Can I use my full UK driving licence in Guernsey, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes — your full UK photocard driving licence is valid for visits up to 12 months. No International Driving Permit is required, and the DVLA "share code" is not normally needed for short-term hire. Just bring your licence plus a credit card in the main driver's name. Hire firms may refuse provisional or paper-only licences, so check before you fly.
Is driving in Guernsey exactly like the UK, or are there nasty surprises for first-timers?
Almost the same: drive on the left, speed limits in mph (30 mph built-up, 35 mph open roads, 25 mph in narrow lanes). There are no motorways and no tolls. The main shock is the network of single-track "ruettes" with passing places — you'll often need to reverse for oncoming cars. Livestock can wander onto rural lanes, so slow down near farms and signal clearly.
What's the minimum age to hire a car, and how much is the young driver surcharge?
Most airport firms (Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Guernsey Motor Hire) set the minimum at 21, with at least one year's licence. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly £20–£30 per day, plus a higher insurance excess (£1,000–£1,500). There is usually no upper age cap, but drivers over 70 may be asked for a medical declaration. Book early in July–August.
Where should I park in St Peter Port without getting clamped or fined?
Use the three main public car parks: North Beach (multi-storey), Salerie Corner and the Weighbridge — charges around £1.20–£1.60 per hour, free after 6 pm. On-street bays are pay-and-display, mostly limited to 30 or 60 minutes during the day. Never park on yellow lines, on the kerb, or in loading bays marked with white "H" lines — traffic wardens in the town are active.
How many petrol stations are there, and what fuel does my hire car take?
There are only around 8–10 forecourts on the whole island, clustered around St Peter Port, St Sampson and the airport — don't let the tank drop below a quarter. Most close by 8–9 pm and Sunday hours are limited. Both unleaded (E5, 95 and 98) and diesel are stocked, and the sticker on the key ring tells you which. No electric charging network of note for tourists.
What insurance do I actually need, and is my UK annual policy enough?
Basic CDW is included, but the excess is typically £500–£1,000, leaving you exposed on the island's narrow lanes. The Super CDW or "zero excess" upgrade costs £10–£15 a day and is worth it. UK domestic motor policies rarely cover Channel Islands hire, even though it's technically Britain. Third-party cover is included by law; check your credit card's cover carefully — most UK cards exclude the Crown Dependencies.
