Guiza (Giza) Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Guiza can be a convenient way to reach the Pyramids area early, visit Saqqara and Memphis at your own pace, and make day trips beyond Greater Cairo. That said, local driving can feel intense: congestion is common, lane discipline varies, and navigation is easier with offline maps and a passenger assisting. For most UK visitors, a short city stay may be better served by taxis or ride-hailing, while a hire car becomes most worthwhile for multi-stop itineraries or trips outside the busiest central areas. Before you book, double-check what is included in the price: excess/deductible on the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), theft cover, any airport surcharge, and whether the rate includes unlimited mileage. At the counter, ask about the deposit hold, accepted card types, fuel policy (full-to-full is usually simplest), and whether there are restrictions on where you can drive. Inspect the car carefully (photos/video), confirm how to contact roadside assistance, and keep your rental agreement accessible for checkpoints.

GREEN MOTION
Sphinx International Airport (SPX) – Car Rental Area
The closest airport to Guiza’s main sights. Car rental counters are typically inside the terminal/arrivals area with vehicles collected from designated airport parking. Pros: quicker transfer to Guiza and often less city-centre driving immediately after landing. Cons: smaller fleet than Cairo’s main airport on some dates and potential airport fees added to the final bill.
Dokki (Giza) – Street-Level City Branches
Popular for visitors staying on the west bank near embassies and major roads. Pros: can be better value than airport pick-up and convenient for local hotels. Cons: kerbside collection and dense traffic can make pick-up/return slower; parking space for inspections may be limited.
Mohandessin (Giza) – Neighbourhood Rental Offices
A well-connected area with plenty of services nearby. Pros: practical if you want to avoid airport surcharges and collect after settling in. Cons: busy streets and one-way systems can complicate navigation; allow time for queues and paperwork.

A compact saloon or hatchback copes brilliantly with Cairo's notorious congestion and the tight, dusty parking around the Giza Plateau. Powerful air-conditioning, light steering and modest fuel use make it ideal for short hops between the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum and Khan el-Khalili. Automatic gearing saves energy in stop-start traffic.

Head to Saqqara, Dahshur or Fayoum and you need higher ground clearance, stronger air-con and a sturdy chassis. An SUV copes with uneven desert tracks and swirling sand far better than a saloon, while still feeling composed on the motorway to Alexandria. Generous boot space handles day-bags, water and shade kit.

A people-carrier or minivan is perfect for British families carrying suitcases, pushchairs and beach gear. Climate control, elevated seating and a smooth automatic gearbox ease long transfers from Cairo Airport to Giza, while sliding doors make child-seat access straightforward in cramped hotel car parks. Roomy and reassuring on hotter days.

Airport desks typically offer the broadest vehicle choice, later opening hours and easier access to newer cars—handy if you are landing late or want to drive straight to Guiza’s hotels and sights. Expect clear signposting, structured parking and more consistent processes for deposits and inspections, though prices and surcharges can be higher than city branches.

Giza Car Hire: FAQs for UK Drivers

Practical answers on licences, traffic, fuel, insurance and airport pickups for British visitors driving around the Pyramids.

Can I use my UK driving licence in Giza, and do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard licence is valid in Egypt, but you must also carry a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP), available from the AA or RAC for £5.50. The IDP is checked at police checkpoints and by every rental desk. Most firms require the main driver to be at least 21, often 25 for SUVs, automatics and premium models, and your licence must have been held for at least 12 months. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of EGP 250–500 per day. Bring your passport, IDP and a credit card in the main driver's name — expect an EGP 5,000–10,000 pre-authorisation hold on the card at collection.
Is Cairo and Giza traffic really that bad, and how do I cope driving on the right?
Yes — Cairo consistently ranks among the world's most congested cities, and the roads around the Giza Pyramids, Faisal Street and the Ring Road grind to a halt from 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00. Egypt drives on the right (opposite to the UK), with aggressive lane-changes, constant horn use and minimal lane discipline. Treat every junction as a negotiation, keep a 3-second gap and double Google Maps' ETA. Use the Ring Road for longer hops, avoid the inner-city core at rush hour, and remember that on Cairo's many roundabouts, traffic already on the circle has priority.
What about fuel — quality, cost and which petrol type should I use?
Petrol is heavily subsidised, so you will pay only around EGP 17–19 per litre (roughly £0.25). Stick to major-brand stations — Misr Petroleum, Mobil, TotalEnergies — found on main roads and in cities; small roadside pumps frequently sell watered-down or adulterated fuel. Most rentals run on 92 or 95 octane; choose 95 for modern turbo engines and avoid the cheap 80-octane fuel. Diesel is common for SUVs. Return the car full-to-full or face a refuelling surcharge of 2–3× the pump price. Public EV charging is almost non-existent outside Cairo and Alexandria, so book a petrol car.
Is the basic insurance enough, or should I pay for full coverage?
Basic third-party liability is mandatory in Egypt but covers only injury or damage you cause to others — your hire car itself is not protected. Given Cairo's known claim-fraud hotspots, narrow parking spots and uninsured local drivers, full Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) plus theft cover is strongly advised at roughly EGP 400–800 per day. Tyre, windscreen and roof damage are usually excluded, so consider the full-super package if driving to the desert. Do not rely on your UK credit-card policy: most exclude North Africa. Photograph the car all-round at collection and have the desk mark every scratch on the diagram.
Where do I pick up the hire car, and how do I get from Cairo airport to Giza?
Most international firms (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar) and reputable locals (Auto, Mashroo3, ABC Rent) have desks in Cairo International Airport (CAI) Terminals 1, 2 and 3, open 24/7 with no late-pickup fee. Giza and the Pyramids lie 25–40 km west, a 45–90 minute drive depending on traffic. Pick up at the airport to avoid a one-way delivery surcharge of EGP 300–500 from Giza hotels, and photograph the car from every angle before leaving the car park. Most city branches close at 22:00–23:00, so plan late returns carefully.
