UK Traveller Guide
Hiroshima Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Hiroshima is most convenient when you want to explore beyond the tram network—such as the Seto Inland Sea coastline, rural onsen towns, and scenic drives in Yamaguchi or Shimane. City driving can be busy at peak times, and parking costs add up in central areas, but once outside the core districts the roads are well maintained and signposted. For travellers from the United Kingdom, remember that Japan drives on the left, most rentals are automatic, and you will need an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention) alongside your UK licence. Expect toll roads on expressways; ask for an ETC card option if available, and clarify your fuel policy (usually full-to-full) to avoid refuelling charges.

Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) Car Rental Area
Most convenient if you fly into Hiroshima. Rental desks are typically in or near the terminal, with vehicles collected via a short walk or shuttle depending on the brand. Pros: broad vehicle choice and easy outbound routes. Cons: possible airport surcharges and less convenient if you are staying in central Hiroshima first.
Hondori & Central Hiroshima (Peace Park Vicinity)
Best for travellers staying in the centre who want a car for a day or two. Pros: walkable from many hotels and easy to start after sightseeing. Cons: higher parking costs, tighter streets, and peak-hour congestion can make collection/return slower.
Hiroshima Port Area (Ujina)
Useful if you plan coastal drives or connect with ferries. Pros: often easier road access than the very centre and potentially simpler parking. Cons: less convenient without public transport connections and fewer late-hour options compared with station/airport locations.

Hiroshima's narrow side streets and tight parking near the Peace Memorial Park demand a compact car. A small hatchback is also economical across the long Shimanami Kaido island-hopping route, and feels intuitive on Japan's left-hand roads for UK visitors. Air-conditioning handles the humid summers well.

The Shimanami Kaido and Seto Inland Sea coastal routes rank among Japan's finest scenic drives. Spring and autumn offer mild, breezy weather ideal for open-top motoring. Panoramic views of the suspension bridges linking six islands are best appreciated with the roof down, salt air included.

Sandankyo Gorge, the highlands of northern Hiroshima, and rural detours into neighbouring Yamaguchi involve steep, twisting mountain passes with occasional uneven surfaces. An SUV provides reassuring ground clearance, stable handling, and a higher seating position. Generous boot space accommodates walking gear, picnic supplies, and shopping hauls.

Hiroshima Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Practical answers on licences, tolls, left-hand driving and routes around Hiroshima

Can I use my UK driving licence in Hiroshima, and is an International Driving Permit required?
Short answer: yes, but only with the right IDP. Japan does NOT accept the 1968 IDP issued by the AA or RAC in the UK. You must obtain a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP before flying out, and carry it together with your full UK photocard licence at all times. A standard translation is not accepted. Rental desks at Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) will refuse to hand over the keys without the paper 1949 IDP booklet, so order it at least 1–2 weeks in advance.
How do I pay expressway tolls on the Sanyo Expressway into Hiroshima?
Cash and credit cards are accepted at staffed gates, but locals and most tourists use ETC (Electronic Toll Collection). You can rent an ETC card from most providers at HIJ for around ¥330 plus a small per-use fee, which often saves 5–15% versus cash and avoids queueing at the ticket machine. Note: driving from Kansai to Hiroshima via the Sanyo Expressway typically costs ¥6,000–8,000 one way for a standard car.
Is driving in Hiroshima difficult if I am used to UK left-hand traffic?
Vehicles in Japan are right-hand drive, so the steering wheel is on the right and you overtake on the right, the opposite of the UK. Most British visitors adapt within a day, but take extra care at junctions and on two-lane rural roads, especially around the Shimanami Kaido and Akinada Islands where cyclists share the road. Narrow streets in Onomichi and the steep lanes near Hiroshima Castle demand slow speeds and wing-mirror folding.
Do I need snow chains or winter tyres to drive to Sandankyo Gorge or the Iwakuni mountains?
For central Hiroshima city between March and November, ordinary tyres are fine. However, Sandankyo Gorge, the Geihoku highlands and the drive to Iwakuni Kintaikyo Bridge in January–February regularly see 5–15 cm of snow. Police checkpoints enforce chain fitting on Prefecture Route 11, and you can be fined ¥6,000 or turned back without them. Carry a set of metal chains in the boot from late December to early March.
What fuel should I use, and what does a full tank cost?
Most Hiroshima rentals run on regular unleaded (レギュラー, Regular), priced at roughly ¥165–175 per litre in 2024. Premium (ハイオク) is only required for high-performance models; diesel (軽油) is uncommon. Return the car with the same fuel level shown on the pick-up sheet. A 40-litre tank refill costs around ¥6,600–7,000. ENEOS, Idemitsu and Eneos Jet stations near Hiroshima Station and on Route 2 are open 24 hours; cash and cards accepted.
Can I drop the car off in a different city, and how much is the one-way fee?
Yes, all major suppliers at HIJ allow one-way rentals, but fees vary sharply. Returning a car to Osaka, Fukuoka or Tokyo typically costs ¥10,000–25,000 depending on distance, while dropping in Kure or Miyajima Ferry Terminal is often free or under ¥3,000. Book one-way at least 48 hours ahead, as the fee must be confirmed with the branch. Crossing to Shikoku or Kyushu by ferry is permitted but must be declared to avoid insurance issues.
