UK Traveller-Friendly
Holyhead Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Hiring a car in Holyhead is a handy way to explore Anglesey’s coastline, reach quiet beaches, and connect easily to North Wales and Snowdonia without relying on limited rural public transport. For travellers from the United Kingdom, the process is familiar—UK driving rules, right-hand driving, and straightforward payment methods—yet it still pays to compare fuel policies, deposit requirements and excess (the amount you pay if there’s damage). Pick-up locations in Holyhead tend to cluster around the ferry/port area, the railway station and nearby town-centre roads, with the best choice depending on whether you arrive by ferry, train or car.
Anglesey Airport (VLY) – Valley
Small regional airport around 15–20 minutes’ drive from Holyhead. Car hire can be limited or seasonal, so availability may be narrower than larger airports. Best for flyers who want to be on the road quickly, but book ahead and confirm pick-up arrangements (desk vs. meet-and-greet).
Holyhead Town Centre (A5 / Market Street Area)
Pros: Often cheaper than port-adjacent pick-up, easier to combine with accommodation check-in and local errands. Cons: Parking and manoeuvring can be tighter, and opening hours may be shorter than transport-hub locations.
Holyhead Industrial / Retail Parks (Outskirts)
Pros: Simpler vehicle collection (space to inspect the car), potentially better availability for vans or larger models. Cons: Less walkable—may require a taxi or lift to reach, and can be inconvenient if you are without transport on arrival.

Snowdonia National Park lies 20 miles south of Holyhead, with steep passes like the Llanberis Pass. A compact SUV gives higher seating for hairpin bends and enough clearance for gravel trailhead parking. It copes well with changeable Welsh weather and stays stable on wet lanes. Perfect for walkers heading into the hills.

Holyhead town centre has tight streets and limited parking, and Anglesey's rural lanes are famously single-track with passing places. A small hatchback slips through easily and sips fuel on longer drives. It's cheap to hire, easy to manoeuvre around the ferry port, and ideal for couples exploring Anglesey's villages, Beaumaris Castle, and South Stack Lighthouse.

Holyhead Car Hire FAQs: The Honest Guide

Driving on the left, ferry queues, Snowdonia weather and other things the brochure won't tell you

I'm driving from the ferry terminal at Holyhead — do I really need to remember which side of the road to drive on?
Yes, the UK drives on the left and steering wheels are on the right, which catches out nearly every first-time visitor. Most rental cars at Holyhead are automatics, which helps, but stick a sticky note on the dash for the first day. Roundabouts give way to the right, and on the A55 towards Bangor you'll meet several within the first 10 minutes — signal left before you exit, not after.
Can I use my home licence at Holyhead, or do I need an international driving permit on top?
EU, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand licences are fine on their own. If your licence was issued outside the EU, you must also carry a 1949 or 1968 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit — UK police at the Wales border checkpoints can, and do, ask for it. The minimum rental age is 21 with at least one year's licence; under-25s pay a young driver surcharge of roughly £20-£30 a day, so factor that into a short ferry-stopover hire.
Is the A55 toll-free, and what about the M4 tolls further south?
Good news for the Holyhead run: the A55 across Anglesey and into North Wales has no tolls. There are no general road tolls anywhere in Wales. The only charges you'll meet are the London Congestion Charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone if you drive into central London, currently £15 a day each. Most hire firms will pass those on to you automatically with an admin fee, so ask at the desk.
I'm planning to drive into Snowdonia — will I actually need winter tyres or snow chains?
UK law does not legally require winter tyres, and rental fleets don't fit them. The Pass of Llanberis and the A498 towards Beddgelert are often closed by snow from January to March, with ice warnings almost weekly. If you're heading up Snowdon between November and April, ask for a car with all-season tyres and carry a £25-£40 snow shovel and a flask. Don't rely on mobile signal — download an offline OS map of the park first.
What fuel policy will I get stung by at Holyhead, and where's the cheapest diesel nearby?
Almost every major firm (Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Avis) operates full-to-full, so return the car with the same level you collected it — there's a £30-£60 refuelling charge plus a 2-3x markup if you forget. The cheapest diesel within 5 minutes of the port is the Asda on the A5 towards the town centre; avoid the Shell forecourt right by the terminal, which is consistently 8-12p a litre dearer. Diesel is the default, but confirm the model at collection.
