Jaco Car Hire Guide: Where To Collect And What To Expect
Renting a car in Jaco is a convenient way to reach nearby beaches, viewpoints and day-trip spots at your own pace, especially if you are travelling with luggage or planning to explore beyond the main strip. Jaco itself is compact and walkable, so a car is most valuable for trips outside town (for example, coastal drives and excursions into the hills). Roads can vary in quality and signage is not always prominent; allow extra time, drive defensively, and consider a higher-clearance vehicle in the wet season if your plans include rural detours. Most UK visitors collect a car via San José (SJO) and drive to Jaco, or arrange delivery/collection with a local Jaco branch.
Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), San José – Main Gateway For Jaco
SJO is the most common arrival airport for UK travellers heading to Jaco. Many major brands operate here and offer longer opening hours and better fleet choice. Typically, you will complete paperwork at a desk (sometimes in-terminal) and then use a shuttle to reach the off-airport rental compound. Before leaving, ask for a written breakdown of mandatory items, deposit/hold amount, and what cover is included versus optional. Pros: widest availability, easier one-way options, strong competition on price. Cons: queues at peak times, heavier traffic leaving San José, and airport surcharges may apply.
Jaco Centre (Beachfront/Main Strip) – Walk-In Pickup And Hotel Delivery
Several providers can meet you in central Jaco or arrange delivery to your accommodation. This suits travellers who arrive by shuttle/bus first and only need a car for a few days. Pros: avoids San José traffic on arrival day, flexible timing, and convenient if you are already settled. Cons: smaller fleets, fewer automatic vehicles, and last-minute availability can be tight in high season; delivery/collection fees may apply outside core areas.
Herradura / Playa Herradura Area – Quieter Collection Point Near Jaco
A practical pickup zone just north of Jaco, often convenient for travellers staying in resort areas. Pros: less congestion than central Jaco, easier parking for inspection and loading. Cons: fewer walk-in options and you may need a taxi to reach the office if not staying nearby.

Jaco's beachfront roads get crowded and parking near the surf is tight. A small car slips into narrow spots, sips fuel on long coastal drives, and feels familiar to UK drivers used to compact city vehicles. It is the most practical pick for guests spending their days on the sand and around town.

Trips to Monteverde Cloud Forest, Arenal Volcano and Carara National Park involve steep, winding roads that turn slick in the rainy season. A mid-size SUV with decent ground clearance handles potholes, muddy patches and river crossings with confidence. There is space for hiking gear, coolers and a change of clothes after waterfalls.

Jaco is one of Costa Rica's surf capitals, and surfers often travel to breaks at Hermosa, Esterillos and beyond. A pickup truck swallows longboards in the open bed, handles sandy beach access tracks, and seats the whole crew comfortably. It is the most practical choice for surf camps and group beach runs.

Collect At SJO For The Widest Choice And Strongest Price Competition

Airport pickup near San José typically offers the largest fleets, longer opening hours and more side-by-side competition between providers. It is a good option if you want to drive straight to Jaco after landing or need specific features (automatic, larger SUV, child seats). Do factor in airport surcharges, deposit holds, and the time needed for shuttles to off-airport lots.

Hiring a Car in Jaco: What UK Drivers Must Know

Six practical answers for British drivers on UK licences, Route 27 tolls, insurance, wet-season roads and 4x4 hire in Jaco

Can I use my UK driving licence in Jaco, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Your UK photocard driving licence is valid in Costa Rica for tourist stays of up to 90 days, so no IDP is legally required. In practice, however, nearly every rental desk in San José or Jaco will ask for an IDP as a Spanish translation. Carry both your licence and a 1968-convention IDP (about £5.50 from the AA or RAC, valid for 12 months) along with your passport, or the agent is entitled to refuse the keys. Photocopies and digital licences are not accepted at the counter.
Driving on the right is alien to me - what is the biggest risk on the road from San José?
The first few hours are genuinely hazardous: a left-hand-drive car means you instinctively drift across the white line on right-hand bends and roundabouts. Stick to 60-80 km/h on the open road, keep a three-second gap, and avoid overtaking on the winding sections of Route 27 until you have re-calibrated. A cheap dash-cam is well worth the few pounds it costs if there is a dispute after an accident. Most collisions involving British drivers happen within the first 30 km of leaving the airport, so take it easy on day one.
How do I pay the tolls on the Autopista del Sol from San José to Jaco?
Route 27 is a toll road and you will pay roughly 1,200-2,500 colones per booth (about £2-4 in total) for the 100 km run down to the coast. There is no electronic tag option for short-term visitors; the booths accept cash, debit/credit cards and sometimes the SINPE Móvil QR app. Keep about 5,000 colones in small notes because some kiosks do not give change. Beware touts offering "all-in" toll packages at the airport - they are simply marking up the standard fare.
Is the rental company's extra insurance compulsory, or am I being upsold?
Costa Rican law forces every contract to include basic third-party liability (around £10-15 per day, known locally as protección al conductor). The cheapest CDW does not, however, cover water damage, river crossings, sand, glass or tyres, and all of these are real risks in and around Jaco. Before paying the counter rate, check whether your UK credit-card insurer or home travel policy already covers CDW; if it does, you only need the top-up to zero excess. The full zero-liability policy is often the difference between a relaxing holiday and a £1,500 bill.
I'm travelling in November - will the roads around Jaco be washed out?
November sits in the middle of Costa Rica's wet season, so unpaved tracks south of Jaco turn to mud and Route 27 occasionally closes overnight after landslips. Book a 4x4 with real ground clearance (Toyota RAV4, Suzuki Jimny, Hyundai Tucson) rather than a small hatchback. Avoid driving after dark when heavy rain is forecast, and never attempt a river fording: a single swollen creek is the most common reason rental cars end up written off in the central Pacific region. Mornings are usually dry and best for long drives.
Do I really need a 4x4 in Jaco, or will a small hatchback cope?
Within Jaco itself and on the paved Route 27 a normal saloon or hatchback is perfectly fine. The moment you head south to Playa Hermosa, Esterillos, Bejuco or any rainforest lodge, however, you need a 4x4, especially after rain. A compact SUV costs only about £6-10 more per day and saves the £800-1,200 excess you would otherwise gamble on a single pothole or muddy slope. Two-wheel-drive cars are routinely recovered by tow trucks between June and November.
