UK-Friendly Advice
Jeddah Car Hire Guide for UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Jeddah is one of the easiest ways to move between the Corniche, Al Balad (Historic Jeddah), shopping districts and day trips along the Red Sea coast. Public transport coverage is improving but can be limited for door-to-door travel, and taxis or ride-hailing may add up if you plan multiple stops each day. A rental car offers flexibility and often better value for couples, families or business travellers—particularly outside peak hotel zones. Expect right-hand traffic, fast multilane roads and a driving style that can feel assertive. For UK visitors, bring your UK driving licence and check your rental company’s requirements for an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on your licence type and length of stay. Most rentals require a credit card for the security deposit. Fuel is usually good value, and the most cost-effective fuel policy is typically ‘full-to-full’. Before you drive off, photograph the car, check tyres and windscreen for chips, and confirm whether your rate includes basic cover, excess reduction, theft protection, and any local taxes or airport surcharges.

King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) – Car Rental Centre
Most international arrivals for Jeddah. Rental desks are typically located within the airport complex and/or a dedicated car rental area depending on your terminal and provider. Follow ‘Car Rental’ signage after baggage reclaim, and if your supplier is off-airport, use the provider’s shuttle or arranged pickup point stated on your voucher. Allow extra time at busy arrival waves for queueing, deposit authorisation and vehicle collection checks.
Al Balad (Historic Jeddah) Area
Pros: convenient for exploring the old town and nearby markets; good if you are already staying centrally. Cons: narrow streets, heavy traffic at peak times, limited parking and more risk of minor scrapes—pick a smaller car and allow extra time for returns.
Corniche / Waterfront Hotels
Pros: easy access to the Corniche Road and seafront attractions; often simpler hotel pickup/nearby branches; less stressful than the oldest central streets. Cons: rates may be higher than suburban branches and weekend traffic along the waterfront can be slow.

A compact car suits Jeddah's busy streets and Al-Balad's narrow lanes. Parking near the Corniche is easier, and fuel use stays modest. Strong air-conditioning handles coastal humidity, while light steering makes traffic simple. British drivers will appreciate upright seating and a tight turning circle. The sensible pick for urban sightseeing and short coastal runs.

The climb to Taif and rugged Hejaz tracks need real ground clearance. A mid-size SUV tackles loose gravel and sudden dips without fuss. Cabin cooling copes with forty-degree heat, and higher seating helps spot desert hazards. The boot swallows coolers, camera gear and companions for a day trip. The dependable pick when the tarmac ends.

Long-Haul Comfort

Large

Long-Distance Comfort & Space

Routes to Makkah, Madinah and AlUla mean hours of motorway driving. A large saloon or estate soaks up the miles with a quiet cabin and supportive seats. The generous boot swallows full-sized suitcases and bottles of Zamzam water. Cruise control and blind-spot monitoring ease fatigue on long stretches. The relaxed choice for families and groups.

Pick Up at JED for Maximum Convenience

Airport pickup is ideal if you want to drive straight to your hotel or onwards to the Red Sea coast without arranging extra transport. Availability is usually strongest at JED, with longer opening hours, a wider choice of vehicles (including family SUVs), and easier one-way or late-night scheduling. Do compare total cost carefully: airport surcharges and premium add-ons can apply, so confirm what is included (taxes, basic cover, mileage, fuel policy) before you sign.

Jeddah Self-Drive FAQs for UK Visitors

Licensing, road rules, fuel costs and weather hazards every British driver should know before collecting a hire car in Saudi Arabia

Can I use my UK photocard licence in Saudi Arabia, or is an International Driving Permit compulsory?
An International Driving Permit is compulsory. Your UK photocard licence is recognised, but you must carry BOTH the original and a 1968-convention IDP (issued by the AA or RAC for £5.50). Saudi traffic police will fine you on the spot — typically SAR 150–500 — if you present only your British licence. Keep the IDP with the rental desk at collection and carry a photocopy on your person. The hire company will refuse to release the keys without both documents.
I'm used to driving on the left in the UK — how risky is Jeddah's right-hand traffic, and which routes should I avoid first?
Jeddah driving is genuinely chaotic by British standards, with aggressive lane-hopping on the corniche and around Tahlia Street. Stick to the Corniche Road, the King Abdulaziz Airport motorway, and the Makkah Expressway until you are confident — they are wide, well-signed and forgiving. Avoid rush hour (7–9am, 1–2pm, 5–8pm) in Al Balad and along King Faisal Street. Allow at least two to three days before you stop drifting towards the kerb at roundabouts.
What are the speed limits in Saudi Arabia, and how strictly are they enforced?
Standard limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 100–110 km/h on dual carriageways, and 80 km/h in built-up areas (40 km/h near some Jeddah school zones). Enforcement is heavy: fixed 'Saher' radar cameras, mobile patrols, and average-speed sections on the Jeddah–Makkah motorway will catch you. Fines start at SAR 300 and exceed SAR 2,000 for 50 km/h over the limit. Unpaid fines must be settled in cash at an ATM before you can exit the country.
Will the Jeddah summer heat damage a hire car, and what should I do during a shamal sandstorm?
June–August surface temperatures in Jeddah hit 50–55 °C, so inspect the tyres for cracking and confirm the air-conditioning blows ice-cold before driving away. Refuse any car with a warning light, weak AC or bald tyres. During a shamal (most common June–July), visibility drops below 50 m — pull off the road, switch off the engine, keep headlights on, and wait. Never attempt the Jeddah–Taif mountain road in low visibility; the 2,000 m climb is unlit and has several hairpin bends.
Is petrol really cheap in Saudi Arabia, and are there any motorway tolls I should budget for?
Yes — 91-octane runs at about SAR 2.18 a litre (around 45p) and 95-octane SAR 2.33, roughly a quarter of UK prices, with stations on every main road. There are NO motorway tolls anywhere in Saudi Arabia, including the Jeddah–Makkah expressway. Mall of Arabia and Red Sea Mall offer free parking; the corniche and central business district use paid bays at SAR 1–3 per hour, payable via the 'Mawared' app or coins. Always keep the last fuel receipt for the full-to-full return check.
What is the minimum age to hire a car in Jeddah, and is the basic insurance enough for a UK driver?
International firms (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Budget) require the driver to be 25; local operators such as Theeb and Hanco accept 21–24 with a 'young driver surcharge' of SAR 25–50 a day. The mandatory CDW still leaves an excess of SAR 3,500–5,000 — high by UK standards. Pay the full Super CDW upgrade (about SAR 35–50/day) to reduce the excess to zero. Most UK credit cards do NOT extend collision cover to Saudi Arabia, so do not rely on them.
