Jeju-do Car Hire Guide: Where to Pick Up and Why It Matters
Jeju-do is one of South Korea’s most car-friendly destinations: sights are spread out, public transport can be slower between coastal and rural spots, and parking is generally straightforward outside peak hot spots. Hiring a car typically offers the best balance of time, comfort and flexibility—especially for multi-stop days (waterfalls, beaches, oreum trails, and the east–west coastal routes). For travellers from the United Kingdom, note that South Korea drives on the right, road signage is often bilingual near tourist areas, and many rental desks expect an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your UK licence and passport. Most rentals operate with a security deposit, fuel policy rules (commonly full-to-full), and optional cover to reduce excess; checking these details in advance helps avoid surprises at the counter.

Jeju International Airport (CJU) Car Rental Centre
The main gateway for Jeju-do and the most popular pick-up point. Many brands operate either on-airport desks or nearby shuttle-served lots. Advantages: maximum choice of vehicles, longer opening hours, easy same-day pick-up after arrival, and strong competition on pricing. Disadvantages: queues at peak arrival banks, stricter document checks, and higher likelihood of add-on upselling (insurance upgrades, toll devices, extra drivers). Tip for UK travellers: confirm IDP requirements before travel, and allow time to adjust to right-hand traffic before leaving the airport area.
Jeju City (Downtown/Port Area)
Convenient for travellers staying near Jeju Port, traditional markets, and central hotels. Pros: often quieter than the airport, easier collection if you arrive by ferry or already on the island, and simpler returns if your flight departs later. Cons: fewer vehicle categories than CJU, limited evening hours at some branches, and city traffic/one-way systems can be fiddly when you first set off.
Seogwipo City (Downtown)
Best for south-coast itineraries (waterfalls, coastal walks, and day trips to the island’s west/south attractions). Pros: reduces cross-island backtracking, and can be a calmer starting point than Jeju City. Cons: smaller fleets, fewer English-speaking staff depending on branch, and returning to the north (airport area) may add time—check any one-way return fees if you collect in Seogwipo and drop near CJU.

Mount Hallasan, South Korea's highest peak at 1,947 metres, dominates Jeju's central landscape with winding volcanic roads and dramatic vistas. An SUV provides the elevated driving position essential for navigating steep gradients and uneven volcanic terrain with confidence. The vehicle's superior ground clearance proves invaluable when exploring remote trailheads and lava tube caves scattered across the island. Jeju's occasional sudden rain showers make the advanced traction control systems of modern SUVs indispensable for safe mountain driving throughout the year.

Jeju City's narrow streets and bustling markets demand a nimble vehicle that can weave through traffic and squeeze into tight parking spaces with absolute ease. Compact cars excel in urban environments where parking availability is limited, particularly near popular attractions like Dongmun Market and Dduty-free shops. The small turning radius proves essential for navigating the city's older road infrastructure while delivering impressive fuel efficiency for daily urban commutes. Opting for a small car ensures stress-free city driving throughout your Jeju adventure.

Pick Up at Jeju Airport (CJU) for Choice, Hours and Competitive Rates

Airport pick-up typically offers the widest selection (from small automatics to family SUVs), longer opening hours, and more frequent promotions thanks to high competition. It is ideal for UK travellers landing in Jeju and heading straight to coastal drives or multi-stop itineraries. Allow extra time for document checks (passport, UK licence and often an IDP), inspecting the car, and understanding fuel and deposit rules before you set off.

Jeju Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Practical answers on IDPs, Hallasan roads, tolls, age rules and island ferries for British drivers

Do I need an International Driving Permit for Jeju, and is my UK photocard licence enough on its own?
Yes, you need a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP alongside your UK photocard licence — both are mandatory. The DVLA issues them for £5.50 online and they are valid for one year. Bring your passport too, as rental desks always cross-check the names. Since Brexit the UK no longer issues 1968 Vienna IDPs, but Korea only recognises the 1949 version, so you are covered. Even with paperwork sorted, swapping the left-hand-drive, left-side-of-road routine for Jeju's right-side driving takes a day or two, particularly on the multi-lane junctions outside Jeju City Airport.
Is the 1100 Altitude Road up Hallasan dangerous for a first-time visitor, and do I need winter tyres?
Jeju drives on the right with the steering wheel on the left — a double adjustment for Britons. The main circular Route 12 is straightforward, but the 1100 Altitude Road (1,100 m up Hallasan's flanks) has 49 tight hairpins and is often shrouded in cloud. In winter (December to February), snow and black ice close it without warning, and chains are rarely available locally. Check the Korea Meteorological Administration alerts daily, and book a compact SUV if travelling between November and March. Keep to 50 km/h — the limit is enforced by average-speed cameras.
Are there motorway tolls in Jeju, and is it worth hiring a Hi-Pass tag?
Jeju has very few toll roads — only the northern Seogwipo–Maewha tunnel and a couple of urban sections near the airport charge a flat 1,000–2,000 KRW (about 60p–£1.20). Most scenic routes, including the coastal Olle road and Hallasan approaches, are toll-free, so a Hi-Pass transponder is not strictly necessary. However, hiring one for £2–3 a day lets you sail through unmanned gates without fumbling for cash. There is no London-style congestion charge, and parking in most rural car parks is free — you only pay in Jeju City and Seogwipo centres.
I'm 23 — can I rent a car in Jeju, and what is the young driver surcharge?
Yes, at 21 you can rent, provided you have held your licence for at least 12 months. However, drivers under 25 pay a daily young-driver surcharge of 10,000–15,000 KRW (£6–9), and a few budget suppliers such as small local brokers refuse under-23s outright. There is no upper age cap beyond a medical declaration for over-75s. To keep the fee transparent, book with Lotte, SK Rent-a-Car or AJ Rent-a-Car. Reserve at least two weeks ahead in July and August, when small SUVs sell out fast.
What petrol do Korean pumps sell, and can I take the rental car on the ferry to Udo Island?
Korean pumps serve '보통' (regular 91 RON), '고급' (premium 95 RON) and diesel '경유' — most rentals run on regular, so check the cap sticker. The full-to-full policy is standard; returning the car short triggers a refuelling charge plus a 20% admin fee. Taking the car on a ferry to Udo or Marado is technically possible at 50,000–80,000 KRW each way, but nearly every rental contract forbids it. Leave the car in the secure long-stay car park at Seongsan or Chuja port for 5,000–10,000 KRW a day and hire a small electric bike on the island instead.
