Car Hire In Kampala, Uganda: Competitive Prices With A Practical UK Traveller’s Guide

Compare options, understand insurance and fuel policies, and choose the best pickup point—airport or downtown—so you can explore Kampala and beyond with confidence.

Updated travel-friendly tips
Kampala Car Hire Guide (For Travellers From the United Kingdom)
Hiring a car in Kampala can be a practical way to manage busy schedules, reach areas beyond the main city, and travel at your own pace—especially if you plan day trips around central Uganda. That said, Kampala driving is intensive: traffic can be heavy, road discipline differs from the UK, and signage may be inconsistent. Many UK visitors choose either a 4x4 for mixed road conditions or a vehicle with a driver for local know-how. Most international arrivals use Entebbe International Airport (EBB) for pickup (around 35–45 km from central Kampala, but journey times vary with traffic). Downtown pickups can be good value and flexible, but you should allow time for paperwork, vehicle checks, and navigating congestion. Always confirm what is included (mileage, taxes, insurance, additional driver fees), clarify fuel policy, and photograph the vehicle at collection and return.

Entebbe International Airport (EBB) – Arrivals Pickup
The main gateway for international flights into the Kampala area. Many suppliers offer meet-and-greet or airport-area collection, which is convenient after landing and helps you start longer journeys without crossing the city first. Disadvantage: airport-area rentals can be priced higher, and the drive into Kampala can be slow at peak times; confirm whether collection is inside the terminal, at the car park, or via a short shuttle/meet point.
Central Kampala (Nakasero / Central Business District)
Pros: central for hotels, offices, and quick access to key city amenities; often easier to compare options if you are already in town. Cons: congestion and limited parking can make collection and return stressful, and short test drives may be difficult in traffic.
Kololo / Kamwokya (Inner-City Neighbourhoods)
Pros: close to many embassies, serviced apartments, and mid-to-upmarket accommodation; may feel calmer than the CBD for handover and vehicle inspection. Cons: still subject to peak-hour delays; availability can be narrower than airport-area options, so booking ahead is recommended.

Pick Up Near Entebbe Airport For The Smoothest Start

Airport-area pickup is ideal if you want to land and get moving quickly, especially for onward travel outside Kampala. You’ll often find wider vehicle choice (including 4x4s) and structured handover processes. Confirm the exact meeting point (terminal, car park, or meet-and-greet) and allow for traffic on the Entebbe–Kampala route.

Kampala Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers to common questions about renting and driving in Uganda's capital

Can I use my UK driving licence to hire a car in Kampala?
Yes, a valid UK photocard licence is accepted in Uganda for stays under three months, provided you are 25 or over. Younger drivers (21–24) face a surcharge of roughly US$8–15 per day. An International Driving Permit is not legally required, but carrying one alongside your licence helps at police checkpoints on the Entebbe–Kampala highway and avoids drawn-out arguments.
What is traffic really like in Kampala, and which side of the road do they drive on?
Uganda drives on the left, so stick to the left-hand lane unless overtaking. Kampala's roads are notoriously congested, with average speeds dropping to 15–20 km/h during the 7–9am and 4–7pm rushes. Expect boda-boda motorbikes weaving between lanes, frequent matatus stopping abruptly, and the occasional pothole even on main routes like Jinja Road. Allow at least an extra 30 minutes for any cross-city trip.
Do I need a 4x4 in Kampala, and how bad are the roads beyond the city?
Within central Kampala a small saloon is fine, but a 4x4 is strongly recommended if your itinerary includes Murchison Falls, Bwindi, Kidepo or the rougher stretches of the Masaka road. Rural roads turn to mud during the two rainy seasons (March–May, October–November) and tarmac can give way to gravel within 20 km of the capital. High clearance saves you from undercarriage damage and expensive recovery fees.
What fuel should I use, and are there enough petrol stations around Kampala?
Most hire cars run on petrol (unleaded), though diesel SUVs are also common. Kampala has a healthy spread of Shell, Total and TotalEnergies stations, and opening hours are usually 06:00–22:00. Outside the city, gaps of 100–150 km between pumps are normal, so fill up before heading to national parks. Most suppliers operate a full-to-full policy, returning the car short will cost you a refuelling fee of around US$20 plus the fuel.
Is driving at night in Uganda safe, and what about police checkpoints?
Avoid driving between Kampala and Entebbe after 21:00 when street lighting is poor and stray animals appear on the road. During the day you will encounter several police checkpoints per 100 km; keep your licence, passport and hire-agreement copy to hand, stay calm, and a small tip of UGX 2,000–5,000 is often expected for a swift release. Always photograph any vehicle damage before leaving the rental yard to avoid disputes on return.
