UK Traveller Guide
Car Hire In Kangaroo Island: Locations, Pros & Cons, And UK Traveller Tips
Hiring a car is the most convenient way to see Kangaroo Island: attractions are spread out, public transport is limited, and many highlights (seal colonies, national parks, beaches and food producers) are easiest to reach by road. For UK travellers, the main adjustments are driving on the left (as at home), allowing for unsealed roads in places, and planning fuel stops—stations can be sparse outside Kingscote and Penneshaw. Book early in peak periods, check your insurance excess and what is covered on gravel roads, and confirm the fuel policy (commonly ‘full to full’). If arriving via Adelaide, consider whether you will fly to Kingscote or take the ferry to Penneshaw, as this often determines the best pickup point.

Firefly
Kingscote Airport (KGC) Car Hire
Best for travellers flying into Kangaroo Island. Car rental desks/collection are typically within or adjacent to the terminal. Have your photocard licence, passport and a credit card in the main driver’s name. Inspect the car carefully before leaving, especially tyres and windscreen, as wildlife and gravel can increase wear.
Kingscote Town Centre
Pros: widest local services (shops, accommodation, some fuel options) and a practical base for day trips; easier to resolve issues or swap vehicles if needed. Cons: you may need a taxi/shuttle from the airport (limited services), and after-hours collection can be restricted.
Penneshaw Township
Pros: convenient for ferry arrivals, good for short breaks focused on the eastern side (beaches, local producers). Cons: fewer vehicles/vehicle types, potentially shorter business hours, and you may still need to travel to Kingscote for more services or fuel depending on your route.

Kangaroo Island's unsealed gravel roads leading to Flinders Chase, Seal Bay and Cape du Couedic demand genuine four-wheel-drive capability. Higher ground clearance helps you avoid stray kangaroos and wallabies at dawn and dusk, while robust suspension copes with corrugations, sand and rain-affected tracks. Automatic transmission handles the island's hilly terrain with ease, and a roomy boot swallows camping gear, eskies and camera kit.

Most of Kangaroo Island's main touring routes are sealed and weave past white-sand beaches, vineyards and the charming towns of Penneshaw and Kingscote. A medium saloon delivers nimble handling on bendy coastal roads and keeps fuel stops manageable across the island's sparse petrol network. Light steering suits narrow village lanes, and the efficient engine handles long stretches between attractions comfortably.

Covering the island's top attractions often means full-day drives with several passengers, picnic hampers and luggage. A people-mover offers generous legroom for tired legs after Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, plus a sizeable boot for eskies, prams and backpacks. Automatic transmission eases hilly rural driving and the occasional gravel pull-off, keeping every passenger relaxed from ferry to farewell.

Kangaroo Island Self-Drive FAQs

What UK travellers need to know before hiring a car on South Australia's wildlife island

Can I rent a car on Kangaroo Island with my UK photocard licence?
Yes — a valid UK photocard driving licence is accepted by every major rental firm on the island (Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Avis). No International Driving Permit is required because your licence is in English. You must be 21+ and have held the licence for at least 12 months; drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of AUD $25-35 per day. Carry both the photocard and the paper counterpart, or download your DVLA share code in case counter staff request it. A credit card in the driver's name is mandatory for the security deposit.
Are the roads sealed, or do I need a 4WD?
The sealed main roads around Kingscote, Penneshaw and the north-south corridor are fine in any saloon. However, headline attractions such as Flinders Chase, Seal Bay and Cape du Couedic sit behind 30-110 km of unsealed, corrugated gravel. A 2WD is workable in dry conditions, but a higher-riding SUV or AWD is strongly recommended between June and August, and after rain, when the surface gets slippery and sharp stones frequently slash sidewall tyres. Some rental firms will refuse 2WD bookings for the more remote tracks, so book early in peak season (December-January). Allow at least 90 minutes to drive the 110 km from Kingscote to Cape du Couedic.
If I hit a kangaroo, will my insurance cover the damage?
Kangaroos are most active at dawn and dusk, and animal-strike damage is NOT covered by the standard Collision Damage Waiver excess of AUD $4,000-6,000. Buy the full premium package that explicitly includes animal-damage cover plus tyre and glass — budget AUD $30-45 per day extra. If you hit a kangaroo, stop in a safe place, take photos of the car and the animal, call the rental firm's 24-hour hotline, and do not approach injured wildlife. Dropping your speed to 60 km/h or below between 17:00 and 07:00 dramatically reduces the risk. After dark, stick to sealed roads whenever possible.
Are there petrol stations everywhere, or could I run out of fuel?
Only four petrol stations exist: Kingscote, Penneshaw, Parndana and American River. Most close by 18:00 and none operate 24 hours. Top up in Kingscote every morning, and never let the tank drop below half if heading to Flinders Chase — the round trip from Kingscote is about 250 km. Both unleaded 91 and diesel are available; LPG is rare. Misfuelling voids every insurance policy, so double-check the pump label and the key fob before filling up. Carry a water bottle and a paper map too, as mobile signal is patchy in the national parks.
Can I pick up in Adelaide and drop off on the island, or take the ferry with the same car?
Most major firms allow Adelaide pickup with Kingscote return, charging a one-way fee of AUD $100-200 on top of the standard rate. You still pay the SeaLink ferry separately (vehicle AUD $110 each way, AUD $50 per adult). A cheaper and more flexible option is to pick up in Adelaide and take the same car across on the ferry — rental contracts usually cover this at no extra charge, but confirm it in writing before sailing. The crossing takes 45 minutes and runs 4-8 times daily, weather permitting.
