UK Traveller Friendly
Kos Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in Kos is one of the easiest ways to explore the island beyond the main resorts—ideal for beaches on the south coast, mountain villages and sunset viewpoints. Roads are generally straightforward, but allow extra time for narrow lanes, scooters and occasional livestock. For UK travellers, driving is on the right and you may need a 1968 International Driving Permit depending on the licence you hold; always carry your driving licence, passport/ID and rental agreement. Expect peak-season demand (June–September), higher prices and limited automatic vehicles, so booking early is wise. Pay close attention to insurance and deposits: confirm what the Collision Damage Waiver covers, the excess amount, the deposit hold on your card, and whether tyres, glass and the underbody are excluded. Fuel policies vary—‘full-to-full’ is usually the most transparent on an island where petrol stations may close early outside the main towns.

Kos International Airport (KGS) – Car Rental Area
Pick up directly after landing at KGS (near Antimachia). Desks are typically in or near the arrivals area, with vehicles either in the adjacent car parks or reached via a short shuttle depending on provider. Best for late arrivals, families with luggage and travellers heading straight to resorts such as Kardamena, Marmari or Tigaki. Downsides can include busier queues at peak times, higher surcharges, and stricter deposit requirements—inspect the car carefully and photograph any existing marks before leaving.
Kos Town (Port & Harbour Area)
Convenient if you arrive by ferry or are staying in central Kos Town. Pros: easy access to shops, cafés and accommodation; you can compare several agencies on foot and avoid airport fees. Cons: heavier traffic, limited parking, and narrow streets—collection can be slower during cruise/ferry peaks, and you may need to drive out of town to refuel at better-priced stations.
Lambi & Kos Town Seafront Strip
Popular for hotels along the seafront and cycle paths. Pros: quick access to the ring roads leading to Tigaki and the north coast; often calmer than the harbour core. Cons: seasonal congestion, limited on-street parking, and some agencies operate shorter hours than the airport—confirm out-of-hours returns in writing.

In Kos, narrow medieval lanes and tight bayside car parks make a compact car a real blessing. The fierce summer heat demands reliable air-conditioning, and short hops between sandy coves mean you won't waste a drop of fuel. A small hatchback is the island's unofficial default for very good reason.

Kos's coastal ribbons — from Tigaki down to Kefalos — simply beg to be driven with the roof down. Salt-scented breezes, August highs above 30 °C and barely a cloud in the sky make a convertible a properly Greek-island indulgence. Pack the sun cream, though, and a wide-brimmed hat.

Heading inland to Zia, Pyli or the slopes of Mount Dikaios, you'll meet steeper gradients, tight hairpin bends and the occasional unmade stretch. A small SUV adds welcome ground clearance and sure-footed handling, without feeling oversized or unwieldy once you're back in Kos Town's busier streets.

Car Hire & Driving FAQs for Kos

Straight answers for British drivers planning to hire a car and explore the island of Kos behind the wheel.

Can I use my UK driving licence in Kos, or do I need an IDP?
Your full UK photocard licence is sufficient for hiring a car in Kos for stays up to six months, no International Driving Permit required. Bring the plastic card only (the paper counterpart was scrapped in 2015). Minimum age is usually 21, but under-25s face a 'young driver' surcharge of roughly €8-15 per day. Hand over your passport too, as most depots photocopy both at the desk.
Greeks drive on the right, will I really cope after years on the left?
Yes, but the first 30 minutes from Kos Airport are the riskiest. Greece drives on the right, overtakes on the left, and roundabouts give priority to vehicles already on the circle, the opposite of older UK roundabouts. Stick to a small petrol manual, avoid night driving on the Asfendiou mountain road, and watch for scooters undertaking you. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on rural roads.
Is the 'full-to-full' fuel policy honest, and where do I refuel?
Full-to-full is standard and the fairest option, refuse any 'full-to-empty' deal as you'll never get a refund for unused petrol. Unleaded 95 costs around €1.85-2.00 per litre (2024). EKO, Shell and Avin stations cluster around Kos Town, Tigaki and Kardamena, but the south-west around Kefalos has few pumps and most close by 21:00. Many island stations are cash-only, so carry €40-50 in notes.
What's the insurance excess catch I keep reading about?
The basic CDW included in your hire still leaves you liable for €800-1,500 if anything happens, and Greek agents push hard for a €15-25/day 'super cover' top-up at the desk. Buy a standalone excess policy in the UK beforehand (around £3/day) and decline the upsell. Crucially, tyres, windscreen and the undercarriage are almost never covered as standard, so inspect those carefully and photograph everything before driving off.
Where can I park in Kos Town without getting fined or clamped?
Avoid the harbour and Eleftherias Square entirely, the tight one-way grid and pedestrian zones near the Castle of the Knights are a fine-trap. Use the free car park behind the marina or the one on Vasileos Georgiou near the stadium. Yellow kerb lines mean no stopping, white lines are free, and blue lines need a paid ticket (€1-2/hour, 08:00-15:00). Fines start at €40 and the rental firm will charge a €25-50 admin fee on top.
Are the mountain and village roads safe to tackle in a normal hire car?
Mostly yes, but pick your routes. The coastal road to Kefalos and the ascent to Zia village are well-surfaced and manageable in a Fiat Panda or Toyota Aygo. Avoid the unsealed tracks to remote beaches such as Cavo Paradiso, hire excess won't cover off-road damage. Watch for free-roaming goats, sudden hairpin bends with no Armco, and tourists on quads in the middle of the road. Drive in daylight where possible and keep fuel above a quarter tank.
