Hire A Car In Kuwait City For Great Value And Total Flexibility

Compare competitive prices and use this practical UK-friendly guide to pick up smoothly at Kuwait International Airport or downtown, with clear tips on insurance, deposits and fuel.

UK Traveller Essentials
Kuwait City Car Hire: Locations, Navigation And What To Expect
Renting a car in Kuwait City is often the easiest way to reach business districts, malls and the seaside areas on your own schedule, especially in the heat or when making several stops in a day. Roads are generally modern and well signed, and parking is widely available at shopping centres and hotels, but traffic can be busy at peak times and driving styles may feel more assertive than in the UK. For UK travellers, note that driving is on the right, speed limits are enforced, and insurance terms and deposits can vary by supplier. The most convenient pick-up is usually Kuwait International Airport for immediate access after landing, while downtown branches can be better for short city stays or if you prefer to avoid airport surcharges.

Kuwait International Airport (KWI) – Arrivals Car Rental Desks
Most major brands and local firms operate airport desks in or near the arrivals area. Follow signs for car hire/car rental; staff will direct you to the collection point and parking area. Pros: longest opening hours, widest vehicle choice, easy for late flights. Cons: can be pricier, queues at busy times, additional airport fees may apply.
Kuwait City Centre (Sharq/Dasman Area)
Convenient for hotels and offices in the central business district. Pros: good if you do not want a car immediately on arrival; can avoid some airport surcharges. Cons: limited parking/kerbside space, heavier congestion at rush hour, shorter opening hours than the airport.
Salmiya (Gulf Road & Shopping Districts)
Popular coastal area with malls, restaurants and beach access. Pros: easy for leisure stays, parking at large malls is often straightforward. Cons: traffic can be dense in evenings and weekends; branch fleets may be smaller than at the airport.

Kuwait City Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers for UK drivers on licences, road rules, fuel and summer driving in Kuwait

Do I need an International Driving Permit for Kuwait, or will my UK photocard licence do?
Your UK photocard licence is recognised for tourist stays of up to 90 days, but in practice every major rental counter (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Budget) will still ask to see a 1968-format International Driving Permit, which costs £5.50 from any UK Post Office and is valid for 12 months. Carry both documents together at all times — failing to present the IDP at a roadside police checkpoint can be treated as driving without a licence, resulting in an on-the-spot fine and the potential voiding of your rental insurance. A colour copy of your passport is also worth carrying.
What's the minimum age to hire a car in Kuwait, and how much is the young driver surcharge?
Most suppliers set the minimum rental age at 21 and the maximum at 65–70, so under-25s are charged a daily young driver surcharge of KWD 5–10 (about £13–25). You must also have held your full UK licence for at least 12 months — anything less and the booking will be refused at the desk without a refund. Drivers over 65 may face a smaller elderly-driver levy or be steered to specific full-coverage vehicles. Always quote your exact age when booking online, as some quoted rates will not display the surcharge until pickup.
I've never driven on the right before — what should I expect on Kuwait's roads?
You'll be in right-hand-drive cars driving on the right-hand side, the opposite of the UK, so allow extra concentration on the first day and watch for the slow lane drifting. Kuwait's main arteries — Routes 30, 40, 50 and the Gulf Road — are smooth, well-lit and signed in English and Arabic. Urban limits are 80 km/h, motorways 100–120 km/h, enforced by fixed cameras and unmarked police patrols. Roundabouts give priority to traffic already on the circle, and right turns on red are not permitted. Tailgating is common — keep a three-second gap.
Is petrol really as cheap as people say, and what grade should I request?
Yes — petrol is heavily subsidised in Kuwait, the cheapest in the Gulf. 91-octane (Mumtaz) costs around 95 fils (23p) a litre and 95-octane (Premium) about 105 fils (26p). Most hire cars run on 91, but always check the fuel-flap sticker before filling. Stations are plentiful around Kuwait City, Salmiya and along motorway service areas, and most are open 24/7 and accept cash or K-Net cards. Opt for a full-to-full fuel policy and keep the last receipt in case of an overcharge dispute when you return the keys.
How do I cope with Kuwait's summer heat and shamal sandstorms while driving?
May to September brings daytime temperatures of 45–52 °C, so keep at least a quarter tank of fuel to avoid vapour lock and run the air-conditioning on recirculate mode to save compressor power. North-westerly shamal sandstorms between June and August can drop visibility below 50 m in minutes — pull well off the road, switch off the engine, close all vents and wait 20–30 minutes. Avoid driving between 13:00 and 16:00 when tarmac softens, and never leave children or pets in a parked car, even briefly. Carry a bottle of water and a reflective jacket in the boot.
Where can I park in Kuwait City, and how much does it cost?
On-street parking in Salmiya, Hawalli and the central business district runs along blue lines and costs 100–200 fils (25–50p) per hour, paid via the Sahel or Parki mobile apps — paper tickets are no longer issued. Mall car parks at Marina Mall, The Avenues and 360 Mall are free for the first 2–4 hours with a validated ticket. Avoid residential bays, bridge underpasses and pavements — Kuwait's tow trucks are aggressive and operate 24/7, with release fees starting at KWD 10 (about £25) plus a daily storage charge.
