Car Hire Guide For La Línea de la Concepción
Hiring a car in La Línea de la Concepción is a practical choice if you want flexibility along the Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz, day trips into Andalucía, or to base yourself near Gibraltar while exploring beaches and hill towns. La Línea itself is compact and walkable, but a car is very handy for reaching places that are awkward by public transport (for example, Tarifa, Cádiz, Ronda, and rural viewpoints). For travellers from the United Kingdom, the key considerations are right-hand-drive adjustment, understanding Spanish fuel and toll rules, and confirming whether your rental is permitted to cross the border into Gibraltar (many companies restrict this or require written approval). Parking near the border and in busy streets can be tight at peak times, while downtown pick-up can be cheaper than airport-based rentals in the wider region.

Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) – Car Rental Centre
Most international visitors use Málaga Airport for this area. Follow the signs for “Car Rental/Alquiler de coches” in the airport complex to reach the dedicated rental desks and vehicle pick-up. From AGP to La Línea is typically around 1.5–2 hours by road depending on traffic. Pros: widest choice of companies, longer opening hours, easy after-hours returns with major brands. Cons: often higher prices and busier queues in peak season; add-on upsells can be more common. If you will drive to Gibraltar, confirm cross-border permission in writing before you collect the car.
La Línea Town Centre (Avenida España & Paseo Marítimo Area)
Central pick-up points around the main avenues and seafront are convenient if you arrive by bus or are staying locally. Pros: often better value than airport rentals; easier to inspect the car in daylight; close to hotels and restaurants. Cons: limited fleet size compared with airports; shorter opening hours; parking to load luggage can be awkward on busy streets.
Gibraltar Frontier / Border Area (La Línea Side)
Some rentals and local branches cluster near the border zone because of high demand. Pros: ideal if you plan to walk across the border and collect on the Spanish side; quick access to the A-7/AP-7 for onward travel. Cons: very busy at commuting hours; strict parking controls; cross-border driving into Gibraltar may be restricted even when the office is near the frontier—always check the contract terms.

La Línea's old quarter and Gibraltar's tight one-way lanes call for a small hatchback that slips through border queues and scarce kerb parking. The car nips round the Rock's hairpin bends and keeps fuel costs low for day trips to Cádiz or Tarifa. British drivers will find a manual gearbox familiar and engaging.

Andalusia's white villages and the rugged Sierra de Algeciras are a small SUV's natural playground, where extra ground clearance pays off. Five seats and a roomy boot suit family trips to Ronda, Jerez or Tarifa's wind-swept beaches. A raised stance helps on rougher tracks. A solid all-rounder for travellers mixing coast, culture and countryside.

Best For Choice, Hours And One-Stop Convenience

Picking up at the nearest major airport (most commonly Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport, AGP) typically gives you the widest range of vehicles, longer desk hours, and smoother late arrivals. It is a strong option for UK travellers flying in with luggage and planning immediate onward travel to La Línea, coastal resorts, or hill towns. Expect busier counters in summer and slightly higher day rates, but better availability of automatics, larger cars, and add-ons like child seats.

La Línea Car Hire FAQs

Essential answers for UK drivers hiring a car on the Gibraltar border

Can I take my Spanish hire car into Gibraltar, and will it cost extra?
Yes, most major firms (Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Record, Goldcar) allow a cross-border trip to Gibraltar, but you MUST declare it at the counter or the insurance is void. Expect a cross-border surcharge of roughly €10–€20 per day and a Green Card handed over at collection. The frontier queue at La Línea takes 15–30 minutes in winter and over two hours in July–August, so set off before 08:00 or after 21:00. Cars are rarely searched, but keep the hire contract, passport and Green Card in the glovebox.
Is my UK photocard licence valid in Spain, or do I still need a 1968 IDP?
For tourist stays up to six months your UK photocard licence is technically accepted in Spain, but UK government and DGT advice is to also carry a 1968 International Driving Permit (around £5.50 from the AA or RAC). Rental desks and Spanish traffic police frequently refuse to release the car or hand out an on-the-spot €200 fine if it is missing. The licence must have been held for at least one year, and minimum age is usually 21 (a young-driver fee of €8–€15 per day applies for under-25s).
Petrol is much cheaper in Gibraltar — can I fill up there before returning the car?
Yes, fuel on Winston Churchill Avenue can be 30–50% cheaper per litre than on the Costa del Sol, hence the permanent queue. However, most Spanish hire contracts state 'return with the same level as collected', so the supplier would charge you a hefty refuelling premium anyway. The trick is to fill up cheaply in Gibraltar for street use, then top up to the brim at a Repsol or Cepsa on the N-340 five minutes before drop-off. Some prepaid 'full-to-full' rates are exempt — read the small print.
Are there any tolls on the AP-7 between La Línea and the rest of Andalusia?
Good news: the AP-7 motorway in Andalusia has been toll-free since January 2020, so driving from La Línea up to Málaga, Seville or Cádiz costs nothing. The only tolls you might meet are the AP-46 near Málaga or a short AP-4 stretch between Jerez and Seville. Spanish toll booths accept cash, contactless card and, on busy plazas, an electronic tag called Via-T. Hire cars rarely carry a tag, so simply use the green 'tarjeta' lane and keep the ticket to the exit barrier.
What are the speed limits and how strict are speed cameras around La Línea?
Spain's limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on dual carriageways, 90 km/h on conventional roads and 50 km/h in towns (30 km/h on many La Línea residential streets). The N-340 dual carriageway between La Línea and Algeciras has fixed cameras, and mobile units cluster near San Roque, Sotogrande and the AP-7 slip roads. Fines start at €100 for a 20 km/h excess and reach €600 for 60 km/h or more over. Foreign cars are traced via EU cross-border exchange, so the bill always reaches you.
