UK Traveller Essentials
La Paz Car Hire Guide For UK Travellers
Hiring a car in La Paz is one of the most convenient ways to reach beaches, viewpoints and day-trip spots across Baja California Sur at your own pace. It can also be cost-effective for couples and families when compared with repeated taxis or tours—especially if you plan to visit Balandra (access restrictions may apply), Tecolote, Todos Santos or drive onward to Los Cabos. Expect straightforward driving in and around La Paz, but plan for longer distances between towns, limited night lighting on some roads, and occasional livestock near the carriageway outside the city. For most visitors, airport pick-up is the simplest option after arrival, while downtown branches can be better value if you are staying centrally and do not need a car immediately.

Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (LPM) – Car Rental Area
Best for immediate pick-up on arrival. Rental desks are typically in or near the terminal, with vehicles collected from the airport car park or a nearby rental lot. Advantages: longest opening hours, easier luggage handling, broadest vehicle availability and add-ons (child seats, larger cars). Disadvantages: airport surcharges are common, queues can be longer at peak flight times, and deposits/insurance requirements may be stricter for some renters.
Malecón / Seafront Area (Central La Paz)
Convenient if you are staying near the waterfront or taking a ferry/boat tour and only need a car for part of your trip. Pros: easy to reach on foot from many hotels and restaurants, often calmer than the airport, and you can inspect the car carefully before leaving. Cons: limited parking around the Malecón at busy times, shorter opening hours, and fewer vehicle categories compared with the airport.
City Centre / Historic Core (Near Government Offices & Main Squares)
A practical choice for travellers staying in central neighbourhoods who want to compare quotes between branches. Pros: good access to banks/ATMs for incidentals, simple city navigation, and sometimes lower local rates than the airport. Cons: busy one-way streets, restricted kerbside parking, and pick-up can be slower if the branch has limited on-site vehicles.

Few places suit a drop-top quite like La Paz. The seafront malecón, the sweeping road north to Balandra and golden-hour drives along the Sea of Cortez all beg for the roof to come down. A nimble convertible delivers that experience while remaining perfectly at home on smooth tarmac and in tight beach car parks.

Top La Paz beaches, including Balandra and remote coves near Espiritu Santo, sit at the end of dusty tracks where a regular saloon will not do. A high-riding pickup truck gives you the ground clearance, load space and open bed needed for coolers, surfboards and camping gear on a proper Baja road trip.

La Paz Car Hire FAQs

Practical answers for UK drivers planning a Baja California Sur self-drive holiday

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in La Paz?
Yes, carry one. A valid UK photocard licence lets you drive in Mexico as a tourist for up to 180 days, but the Mexican authorities and almost every rental desk will also ask to see a 1968-convention IDP (£5.50 from the AA or RAC before you fly). Bring your passport, the IDP and a credit card in the main driver's name or you will be turned away at the Hertz, Avis or local counter.
Is the Highway 1 drive from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz safe?
Mostly yes, but don't drive it after dark. The 150 km Carretera Transpeninsular takes roughly 1 hr 45 min on the toll (cuota) lanes, which cost around 220 MXN. The free (libre) road is slower and full of topes. Expect two or three military checkpoints near Todos Santos and Santiago; be polite, hand over documents through the window and you'll be waved on within minutes.
Which petrol should I put in my hire car?
Magna, the 87-octane regular unleaded sold at every Pemex station. Most economy cars are booked on Magna, so just say "Magna, lleno por favor" (fill it up). Premium (91+) is widely available but pointless unless you hire a performance model. Diesel pumps exist in La Paz town but are scarce in smaller villages, so avoid diesel cars for any off-piste loop to Balandra or the beaches of Tecolote.
Will the rental company's basic insurance cover me properly?
No, treat the basic CDW as a starting point. Mexican law already forces a third-party liability policy on every rental, but the excess on a scratched bumper can still be 10-20% of the car's value (£400-800). Pay the full zero-excess upgrade, or buy a standalone UK motorhome/car policy (e.g. World Nomads, Questor) that covers sand-blasted paint, popped tyres and underside damage on rough tracks, none of which the standard CDW ever includes.
Can I take the rental car on the ferry to mainland Mexico?
Don't try it. The TMC ferry from Pichilingue terminal, 20 km north of La Paz, sails to Mazatlán and Topolobampo, but every major rental contract (Hertz, Europcar, local firms) explicitly bans sea crossings. Doing so voids all insurance and triggers a minimum £1,500 penalty on return. If you want a mainland leg, book a one-way drop-off in La Paz and pick up a second car on the other side of the Sea of Cortez.
What are topes and why do people warn about them?
Topes are speed bumps, and on the Baja they are brutal: often unmarked, painted only at the last second, and up to 30 cm high. Every village from El Pescadero to Todos Santos has 5-15 of them in a row, so a posted 80 km/h highway can become a 10 km/h slalom in seconds. Hit one at speed and you risk a burst tyre, cracked alloy or broken suspension, which is excluded from most CDW policies. Slow down on every approach, especially after dark.
