UK Traveller Guide
La Paz Car Hire Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Hiring a car in La Paz can be a smart choice if you want flexibility for day trips and overland routes (for example towards Lake Titicaca, the Yungas, or onward journeys where flights and long-distance coaches are less convenient). Do note that La Paz sits at very high altitude and driving can feel more demanding: expect steep gradients, busy city traffic, and rapid weather changes. For many visitors, the easiest approach is to pick up at the airport for a quick exit from the city, or choose a downtown branch if you prefer to settle in first and avoid immediate driving. Always confirm what insurance is included, whether a credit-card deposit is required, the fuel policy (often full-to-full), and any restrictions on unpaved roads—important in Bolivia where surfaces can change quickly outside the city.

El Alto International Airport (LPB) – Arrivals Area Pick-up
LPB is La Paz’s main airport and the most straightforward place to collect a rental car. Follow signs to the car hire desks/meeting points in the arrivals area, then proceed to the vehicle collection bay or nearby car park as instructed by your provider. Pros: longest opening hours, quick access to main roads for leaving the city. Cons: airport surcharges may apply and queues can be longer at peak arrival times.
Sopocachi (Hotel And Embassy District)
A popular central area with many hotels and services. Pros: convenient if you want to compare options after arrival and avoid airport pricing; easier to start driving after you have acclimatised. Cons: street parking can be limited and traffic can be heavy, especially at peak hours.
San Miguel / Calacoto (Zona Sur)
A calmer part of the city often considered more comfortable for first-time drivers. Pros: generally less congested than the centre and convenient for heading out towards southern routes. Cons: further from many tourist sights in central La Paz and may offer fewer immediate rental choices depending on season.

La Paz's centre is a maze of steep, narrow lanes with scarce parking. A compact hatchback slips into tight bays and copes with stop-start traffic at altitude. Light on fuel and easy to park, it is ideal for hops between the Witches' Market and the cable car stations. Automatic gearing eases the city's punishing gradients.

Reaching the Death Road or the Cordillera Real means hairpin bends, thin air and changeable weather. A mid-size SUV with turbocharged power retains performance above 4,000 metres where standard engines can struggle. Higher ground clearance handles potholes, while four-wheel drive reassures on loose tracks. A roomy boot swallows hiking kit for a family of four.

Multi-day drives to the Salar de Uyuni and remote altiplano villages demand serious capability. A diesel pickup with four-wheel drive and high ground clearance shrugs off corrugated gravel and salt crust. The load bed takes spare tyres, jerry cans and camping gear where fuel is scarce. Robust suspension keeps passengers comfortable on long, punishing stretches.

Fast, Flexible Pick-up At El Alto International Airport (LPB)

Airport collection is ideal if you want to leave La Paz quickly or start a road trip immediately. You’ll usually find better availability (including larger vehicles) and longer operating hours. It can be more convenient for late arrivals, but check for airport surcharges and confirm the exact meeting point and out-of-hours procedures before you fly.

La Paz Car Hire: Top FAQs Answered

Licences, altitude driving, insurance and road conditions explained for British self-drivers

Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in La Paz?
Yes — in practice, an IDP is effectively mandatory. Your UK photocard licence is technically valid for short tourist visits, but virtually every rental firm in La Paz (Hertz, Localiza, Budget, Bolivia Rent) refuses to hand over keys without a 1968-convention IDP, costing about £5.50 from the AA. Carry your passport, the IDP and the original licence together. Minimum driver age is 25; drivers aged 21–24 pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly US$10–15 per day per driver.
Will La Paz's altitude affect my rental car, or just me?
Both, so plan for it. La Paz sits at 3,640 m and El Alto airport at 4,150 m — naturally aspirated engines lose 10–15% of power, while small turbocharged units (common in 1.0–1.6-litre hire cars) cope noticeably better. Use low gears on the long descent from El Alto into the city; sustained braking causes fade. Drivers should also expect sorojche (altitude sickness) on day one — headache, nausea, breathlessness. Take it easy, sip coca tea, and avoid driving for the first 12 hours.
Is driving on the right a shock for someone used to the left?
It is, so book an automatic to free your mind for the road. Bolivian roundabouts give priority to traffic already circulating — the opposite of British roundabouts, and a real trap for newcomers. Overtake strictly on the left, and expect unmarked speed bumps (tumulos), aggressive minibus drivers and the occasional chicken crossing the carriageway. A cheap dash-cam (US$20–30) is worthwhile insurance against disputed claims in chaotic El Alto traffic, where lane discipline is largely optional.
What fuel do Bolivian cars use, and will I find a station?
Petrol is sold as Gasolina Especial 85 (RON 85) or Gasolina Premium 92 (RON 92); diesel (diesel oil) is also widely available. YPFB stations are plentiful in central La Paz but thin out fast once you head onto the altiplano towards Uyuni, Sucre or Lake Titicaca — fill up at every opportunity and keep a half-tank minimum after dark. Cash in bolivianos is king; cards work at city pumps. Return the car full-to-full or face refuelling charges of 2–3× the pump price.
Is the basic CDW enough for Bolivian roads?
Almost certainly not. Most rentals include third-party liability and a basic collision waiver, but the excess (deductible) is typically US$1,000–2,500 — and Bolivian roads will find it: deep potholes, landslides in the November–March rains, livestock on rural routes, plus a road-traffic fatality rate among the highest in South America. Upgrade to a zero-excess policy for roughly US$15–25 per day. It will pay for itself the first time a hidden tumulo cracks an alloy or a stone chip shatters the windscreen.
