Compare airport and downtown options, understand insurance and fees, and pick the right vehicle for Guanacaste beaches and national parks with our practical, UK-focused guide.

Updated Travel Guide
Liberia Car Hire Guide (UK Travellers)
Liberia is the main gateway to Costa Rica’s north-west (Guanacaste). Hiring a car here is one of the most convenient ways to reach beach towns such as Playa Hermosa, Coco and Tamarindo, as well as inland sights and national parks, on your own timetable. Expect generally straightforward driving on primary routes, but allow for slower progress on rural roads, occasional potholes, and heavier rain impacts in the wet season. For UK drivers, remember Costa Rica drives on the right, and automatic cars are common; a 4x4 can be worthwhile if your accommodation is accessed via unpaved roads. Booking ahead can improve availability and pricing, especially at peak times.

Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR)
Liberia’s main airport for Guanacaste. Many rental desks are in the terminal, with some operators using a short shuttle to an off-airport lot. Follow signs for 'Rent a Car' in arrivals; have your passport, driving licence, and a credit card ready. Allow extra time for insurance explanations and the vehicle inspection.
Central Liberia (Around Parque Mario Cañas Ruiz)
Pros: Often calmer pickup experience than the airport, with flexible local hours and easier time to review paperwork. Convenient if you are staying a night in Liberia before heading out. Cons: You’ll need to arrange a taxi/transfer from LIR first, and the immediate area can have limited parking; not ideal if you want to hit the road straight after landing.
Liberia – Pan-American Highway (Route 1) Area
Pros: Practical access for onward travel towards beaches and national parks, and typically easier vehicle collection/return with more space to check the car. Cons: Less walkable than central Liberia and may require a taxi; ensure you confirm exact return instructions, as multiple branches can sit along the same corridor.

Fast Start for Guanacaste: Pick Up at Liberia Airport

Airport pickup suits travellers landing and driving straight to the coast. You’ll usually find the widest choice of vehicles (including automatics and 4x4s), longer opening hours, and convenient returns for early flights. It can be busier, and some suppliers use off-airport shuttles, so factor in time for queues, insurance discussions, deposits, and a thorough inspection before you leave.

Liberia Car Hire FAQ

Practical answers on driving rules, paperwork, insurance and road conditions around Liberia, Costa Rica

Can I drive in Costa Rica with a UK licence, and do I need an IDP?
Yes. Your full UK photocard driving licence is valid for the entire length of your stay, and no International Driving Permit is required. You must carry the original licence plus your passport at all times. The minimum age to rent is 21 at most firms, and drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly US$10–15 per day.
Are Costa Rican roads really that bad, and which routes out of Liberia should I avoid?
In short, yes, expect rough surfaces. The Interamericana (Pan-American Highway) to San José is fully paved and in fair condition, but the routes to beaches such as Tamarindo, Sámara and Junquillal are partly unpaved, potholed and dusty in dry season. Drive a 4x4 if you plan to reach Papagayo, Brasilito or anywhere off the main tarmac, and avoid driving at night because of unlit vehicles, pedestrians and livestock.
What is the speed limit, and how are speeding fines handled for tourists?
Urban limits are 40 km/h, rural roads 60–80 km/h and motorways 100 km/h. Police do set up radar checks, especially around Cañas and Bagaces. On-the-spot fines of roughly ₡110,000–₡250,000 (around £150–£340) can be paid in colones or US dollars, and the ticket is recorded against your rental company, which will pass the charge to your card.
Is the mandatory basic insurance enough, or should I buy the full zero-excess upgrade?
The basic third-party liability is legally required but covers only injuries to other people, not damage to your rental car. Damage to a hire vehicle in Costa Rica is common because of gravel roads, so most travellers take the Collision Damage Waiver, which is typically US$15–25 per day. Check whether your UK credit card already provides CDW cover, but note that some rental desks in Liberia still insist on their own policy.
Where do I fill up, and is the full-to-full fuel rule strict at Liberia Airport?
Petrol (gasolina) and diesel (diesel) are widely available around Liberia, with 24-hour stations near the airport and along the Interamericana. The rule is full-to-full: refuel within about 10 km of the airport before returning, keep the last receipt, and expect a refuelling charge plus a service fee of roughly US$30 if the tank is short. Electric charging points are still rare, so stick with a petrol or diesel 4x4 for volcano and beach trips.
Are there tolls and bridge fees on routes from Liberia, and do I need a prepaid tag?
There are no electronic tags in Costa Rica. Tolls are paid in cash, mostly colones, on the Interamericana and the bridge over the Tempisque to the Nicoya Peninsula; each booth costs ₡400–₡1,200 (about £0.50–£1.70). Keep small notes in the car, as cards are not accepted at the booths and queues can slow the drive south by 20–30 minutes during holiday weekends.
