Updated for UK drivers
Limassol Car Rental Guide For UK Travellers
Limassol is a great base for exploring Cyprus beyond the beachfront—think the Troodos Mountains, wine villages, Kourion, and day trips to Paphos or Nicosia. Hiring a car is often the easiest way to travel on your own schedule, particularly if you plan to visit rural areas where buses are less frequent. For UK travellers, the transition is usually straightforward: Cyprus drives on the left and road signs are generally clear, although narrow streets, steep village roads and busy coastal traffic in peak season can take some getting used to. Expect the widest choice and best-value rates when booking in advance, especially for automatic cars (often limited and pricier).
Larnaca International Airport (LCA) – Best For Limassol Arrival
LCA is the most common airport for Limassol. Car hire desks are in the arrivals area, with pick-up typically in the airport car parks. It is around 45–60 minutes to Limassol via the A5/A1 motorways. Pros: widest range of suppliers, longest opening hours, easy motorway access, good for late arrivals. Cons: can be busier, queues in summer, and you may pay an airport location surcharge.
Limassol Marina & Old Port Area
Convenient if you are staying near the seafront promenade or Old Town. Pros: easy walkability to hotels, restaurants and attractions; good if you want to avoid airport queues. Cons: heavier traffic, tighter streets and paid parking; car collection can be slower at peak times.
Germasogeia Tourist Area (Hotel Strip)
Popular for travellers staying along the eastern seafront. Pros: close to many resorts and beachfront accommodation; good access to the coastal road towards Ayia Napa/Protaras. Cons: busy in summer, limited on-street parking, and pick-up hours may be shorter than airport locations.

Limassol's seafront promenade and the curvy coast road to Paphos beg for an open roof. A convertible lets you soak up the Mediterranean breeze along Coral Bay and Aphrodite's Rock. Light, easy to park in the old town, and ideal for the steady, well-surfaced A1 motorway that hugs the south coast.

A compact SUV handles the winding climb into the Troodos range with confidence, where hairpin bends and shaded forest roads can catch out low-clearance cars. Higher seating helps on the route to Mount Olympus and the painted churches of the Marathasa valley. Still nimble enough for Limassol's one-way streets and harbour-side car parks.

A people-carrier gives everyone their own seat, plenty of boot room for beach kit, and effortless air-con for July school-holiday traffic. It tames the busy A1 between Limassol and Nicosia, leaves space for cool-boxes on day trips to Kourion, and slides into supermarket bays with surprising ease for its size.

Fast Getaway With The Widest Choice

Choosing airport pick-up (most commonly Larnaca LCA, or Paphos PFO) usually gives you the best availability, longer opening hours and the broadest range of vehicles—especially useful for families, late arrivals and anyone needing an automatic. You can be on the motorway quickly and reach Limassol in under an hour from either airport in normal traffic.

Limassol Car Hire FAQs

Practical questions on driving, licences, tolls and insurance in Limassol, Cyprus

Can I drive in Limassol with a UK photocard licence, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, your full UK photocard licence is valid for the whole of Cyprus for stays up to six months, so an IDP is not legally required. Bring the paper counterpart or check code if you have a pre‑2015 licence. Most rental desks (Hertz, Avis, Sixt at Larnaca and Paphos) will not hand over the keys until they have seen a licence held for at least one year, and drivers under 25 usually pay a €10–€15 per day young‑driver surcharge.
Do I drive on the left in Limassol, and are the roads any different from the UK?
Yes, you drive on the left, but the cars are left‑hand drive because Cyprus followed the continental system. The A1 and A6 motorways around Limassol are smooth and well signed in English; rural roads in the Troodos foothills get narrow and twisty. Stick to 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on motorways. Drink‑driving limit is a strict 22 µg, so even one pint can put you over.
Are there any motorway tolls around Limassol, and how do I pay them?
Cyprus has no toll motorways or bridges, so there is nothing to pay on the A1, A6 or A22. You will only see tolls if you cross the Green Line into Northern Cyprus, which most hire firms forbid anyway. That said, the older Nicosia–Limassol road has two fixed police‑camera sections at Pera Chori and Kalavasos, so keep to 80 km/h and watch for the yellow ‘radar ahead’ signs.
What fuel policy should I choose, and where can I fill up cheaply near the marina?
Pick ‘full‑to‑full’: Cyprus uses unleaded 95, diesel and Autogas LPG, and the kiosk charges €1.55–€1.75 per litre, with supermarket stations (Petrolina, ENI, ESSO) usually 6–8 cents cheaper. Two 24‑hour stations sit within 1 km of the old port and marina – the Petromina on Franklin Roosevelt and the ENI on Anexartisias – both with card readers that work on UK chip‑and‑PIN cards. Return the car with a receipt, as a missing receipt can trigger a €25 admin fee.
Is third‑party liability enough, or should I take the full excess‑reduction package?
Basic third‑party is included by law, but the collision damage waiver excess on a Ford Fiesta or similar is typically €800–€1,200, and a single kerbed alloy can wipe that out. For a one‑week beach‑and‑mountain trip, paying €9–€14 per day for ‘Super Cover’ usually works out cheaper than the excess deposit blocked on your credit card. Glass, tyres and underbody are often excluded, so add the tyre‑and‑glass upgrade if you plan to drive the Akamas or unpaved monastery tracks.
